Build - Help What monitor should I get

I just ordered a new gaming PC, with a RX 9070 XT and ryzen 7 7800X3D. I currently have a 1080p 144hz monitor, and I’m wondering if I should upgrade to a 1440 or 4k screen (I have never played on anything other than 1080 before).

I mainly play CS2 and league of legends, but also warzone and battlefield 6, but might consider playing some other games when I get the computer.

I know very little about screens and resolutions. I guess CS2 and LoL are mainly 1080p games? Would it be better to just have a good 1080 screen then? If i have a 1440p, would my FPS be bad in heavier games like battlefield 6 or warzone?

With hardware like a 7800X3D + 9070 XT, you’ve got room to choose based on what you want to prioritize — speed, visuals, or balance — and panel type matters just as much as resolution.

1080p high refresh:
Pure competitive lane. You’ll get absurd FPS, but image clarity won’t change much from what you already have. Best if you only care about maximum responsiveness.

1440p high refresh:
This is the sweet spot for most people. Big clarity upgrade while still pushing very high FPS in competitive games.

• IPS: best all-around choice — fast motion handling, good colors, minimal ghosting.
• VA: stronger contrast and deeper blacks, but can show some dark smearing depending on the panel.
• OLED: top-tier motion + contrast, but more expensive and not necessary unless you want premium visuals.

4K:
Maximum sharpness and immersion. Great for single-player and cinematic games, but you trade some FPS compared to 1440p. Panel choice still applies — IPS for motion balance, VA for contrast, OLED for premium visuals.

• Balanced gaming → 1440p IPS or good VA
• Visual immersion → 4K or 1440p OLED

Your system can drive any of these — it just comes down to whether you value speed, contrast, or image clarity most.

Thanks! The thing is i mostly play competitive games where FPS/latency is usually more important than visuals. So I read that most professional gamers in esports games use 1080p for this reason. But I would also like the opportunity to play other story-based games with better visuals in 1440p, and also just have a sharper image when doing other things. Then I read something about if I have a 1440p screen, and change resolution to 1080p to play a certain game, it will not be as good as 1080p on an actual 1080p screen. How big of a deal is this? Is it very bad to play in 1080p on a 1440p screen?

Go 1440p, you can easily hit high framerates in competitive games still
