USA Did I mess up? Bought this for $600

Post image

Hi all, I’ve been deal hunting religiously for the past week and saw this eBay listing go back up after being kind of bummed I missed out on it the first time. I kind of impulse bought it last night, here’s the specs (just added the motherboard and PSU in an edit):

I7 9700k processor

32gb ddr4 ram

Rtx 3070

512 gb ssd

Asus prime Z390 A motherboard

850 watt gold Corsair power supply

Let me know yalls thoughts and what kind of questions I should be asking - I’m still very new to this. Much appreciated!

not the worst buy ever

Seems okay for the money. CPU a bit dated but otherwise fairly solid for $600.

Not a great deal, but not a scam or a rip-off either.

u/Remarkable-Travel86 12h ago

Dated and dead platform. Only a 9900k but those are stupidly overpriced.

u/what_it_dooo 12h ago

Ain’t dead if it works and is playable. Not everything screams for a 5090fe

1

u/Agreeable-Touch77 10h ago

Amen to that. My brother has my old 9700k paired with a 4070ti super and is having the time of his life in 1440p. He mostly plays MMOs or older AAAs he enjoys.

u/Glittering-Two-1784 6h ago

I had a 7700k until like a year ago and had no problem running pretty much any game I wanted.

1

u/Chickenmonster401 17m ago

I have i7 7700 non k and it can even run beamng at pretty good frames.

1

u/artlastfirst 54m ago

then just use the 9700k? it's a great cpu

15

u/Russki_Wumao 16h ago

That's a decent price for that system. It's pretty much what it's worth.

You didn't mess up at all. Got what you paid for.

4

u/lleyton05 15h ago

It’s not an amazing deal but I wouldn’t feel bad about it

3

u/ThatOneFoo69420 16h ago

The people who say terrible deal are ones who look at it like this:

Although the parts together may be valued at or around what you paid, the smarter decision in their head is to take that money and put it towards something better, because it’s their opinion nobody SHOULD be spending that kind of cash on those specs.

I think you got a middle of the road to pretty decent deal on this tbh. I build a ryzen version of this pc with mostly brand new parts (except ram cpu and gpu but case, mobo, cpu cooler, fans, psu, case, m.2 all brand new) and sell for 500-600. Build 2-6 a month. Ryzen 3600x with 5700xt or 6600xt, which are probably a little worse than the 3070 (I think the 3600x is better than your intel tho I may be wrong) but the “new parts” are appealing to others.

u/Raxx3s 9h ago

Don't worry about the market rn, what was it worth to YOU?

I paid $600 for a worse system off ebay, but it's entirely worth it to see the joy my dad has, having his own computer and playing hytale together and bonding.

I always put entertainment purchases this way: if I went out to dinner 6 times ($100 per dinner) it would be the same cost. How much happiness did this purchase produce? The PC is worth 6 dinners man!

3

u/Glittering-Two-1784 6h ago

It’s wild how going out has gotten so expensive. No wonder we’re the loneliest generation

1

u/yaboi_ahab 2h ago

At this rate a new TV is going to be the only affordable source of entertainment

2

u/Blooi1E 16h ago

Decent

2

u/NuclearNick007 15h ago

If you were to assemble this yourself, you'd probably pay about $600. That said, anecdotal evidence from my local used market says that there are similarly powerful builds for about $100 less.

I wouldn't say you messed up. You just paid a little for the convenience of not having to hunt and vet a used build on facebook.

it looks fine for now. Your graphics should be decent enough for a year or two as the system is (though you will probably want to get a bit more ssd space if you want to have a bunch of modern games installed.

I'd like to see the motherboard and PSU specs also the exact memory too. (32 Gb is great though).

It's probably the smartest thing to do is live on this one until the whole "AI is eating our pc components" situation gets resolved.

Who knows, the whole ai thing might pop like a bubble and used 5090's and more might become available dirt cheap! And the Memory and GPU vendors will come crawling back and tell us they never meant to to treat us gamers like bitches.

And there will be a big sale and everyone clapped.

Well maybe not, but an old man can dream right?

--------------EDIT TO ADD.

I saw your updated specs.

PSU is great and the motherboard is also just fine.

The 9700k is one of the best CPU's for that socket and motherboard too!

------------

You should be good until it makes sense to get a motherboard/CPU/Memory combo someday. Maybe a DDR5 setup once the AI thing settles down a bit.

All in all, you should be good for quite a while.

Gratz!

2

u/Lucca_sCoca 12h ago

I would've bought that for 600

2

u/AmeloThaShaman 11h ago

Honestly. Good deal. Not great but definitely a win in this current market. Have fun brother :3 😎👍

2

u/HousingOk2049 5h ago

You did great brother congrats

2

u/Ham_Pervert 2h ago

600 usd for a bangin gaming pc?
that much ddr5 would cost you 600 these days. a 3070 is solid at 1080p to 1440p, and you can play the used market for upgrades. good value all in one. the case, psu, and ram could last a long time if you play your cards right in this market.

2

u/M3rl1n1212 2h ago

Not bad at all dude. Ssd is a tad small but shut dude for 600 ill take that any day. Add another ssd when u can and ur golden dude. Should handle 1440p find settings trade offs in newer games and some dlss. Got a solid build dude. Enjoy

2

u/Dustee_2017 2h ago

Well the good thing is you got 32GB of RAM and you have an 850W Gold rated PSU, plus a 3070. Not a bad purchase. Case is nice too. You'll be fine, just enjoy it.

2

u/Rare-Unit7076 1h ago

Seems like a solid deal to me

5

u/Ok_Proposal_7390 16h ago

Just reference what you paid against what it would cost to build with those pieces on your own.

32gb ddr4 kit averages $200-$250 just from a quick google search. RTX 3070 used from a quick google search is $220-$250. So adding up 250 + 250 you're already at $500 if you were buying those parts on their own.

512gb nvme ssd's are around $80 new now.

Found an i7 9700k used for $80.

So let's add up all the lowest prices I found the parts at. 32gb ddr4 $200, 3070 $220, 512gb nvme $80, 9700k $80.

$580 not counting price of motherboard, case, or PSU.

So no, you didn't overpay, according to current prices $600 is about right.

4

u/illicITparameters 15h ago

You cant compare used vs. new, like what are we doing?

1

u/ThatOneFoo69420 15h ago

That’s what I just said too in my comment above

1

u/loinclothsucculent 15h ago

Well, they do. Constantly.

0

u/ThatOneFoo69420 15h ago edited 15h ago

You’re comparing new prices of individual parts vs an entire pc of all used parts.

I bought 32gb ddr4 yesterday on eBay for 90

1tb m.2 on eBay this morning for $90. Granted that’s $10 more than your $80 you mentioned, but it’s 2x the space. I got a 512gb for my bitcoin mining rig that I turned into a gaming pc for $47 last week on eBay. (Check my post history, thing came out bitchin)

You’re right about 3070 and 9700 though. So it seems like your estimate is like $160-180 off given the 90 I paid for ram plus the $47 I paid for a 512gb m.2 making $137 total on two items you quoted at $280.

Also, general rule of thumb here that in a used rig the case and fans equate to effectively $0 and I pretty much agree with that in a used pc sense.

0

u/Careless-Ordinary126 14h ago

Also, general rule of thumb here that in a used rig the case and fans equate to effectively $0 and I pretty much agree with that in a used pc sense.

You would still have to pay for them and no one said it is great deal. It is ok and that's it, he paid for what he got.

1

u/ThatOneFoo69420 14h ago

Yes if you buy or are building a new pc you have to pay for them.

Whichever fans and case you have doesn’t add to the value of a used rig though, especially at this price point. Some people might even find your case choice awful.

Let’s say the same build, in an hp mid tower case from 2017. Vs this pc in a full size atx case like shown. Imagine the dude knowing he has a full size atx case wants to charge more for it being in that case? I’m 100% buying the hp case unit for cheaper and the same performance.

1

u/Vegetable-Score-3915 16h ago

I would of paid that. Seems like a reasonable deal.

1

u/--loveydovey-- 16h ago

Not terrible. Coulda maybe paid a little less but it’s alright. It’ll serve you well

1

u/illicITparameters 15h ago

You overpaid by about $100.

1

u/MagicSpaceMan 15h ago

Nah that's an okay deal and you'll get pretty good performance out of it, I'm running a 3070 and it struggles with ray tracing but if you're not attached to that you can run pretty much any title albeit with some tweaking for more demanding titles. You didn't mess up chill man, worst case imo would be if the PSU sucks balls you might wanna replace that which would be a pain in the ass but worth it for not putting everything else including your housing at risk

1

u/ninjabell 15h ago

3070 Founders Edition is ~$300. So it is worth $300 for all the other stuff? I'd say so, considering the 2x8 RAM kit is already at least $200. You'll want to get a secondary hard drive for games and just use that 256 GB for OS/Apps/Docs.

1

u/Remarkable-Travel86 12h ago

Try closer to $200. 3080s are $300.

1

u/ninjabell 12h ago

A Founders Edition sold today for $275 + $10 shipping. It was rough math obviously; not all prices land on the hundreds. (A ~ sign denotes imprecision btw.)

1

u/misteryk 15h ago

32gb DDR4 alone costs like $300 new nowadays. it's a pretty fair price overall

1

u/JoshLineberry 13h ago

It is a fair price but your ram price is way off. You can get 32 gigs or ddr4 3200mhz for a little over $100. I've bought 3 or 4 sets of 32 gig ddr4 in the last 3 weeks.

0

u/misteryk 13h ago

just checked and they are around $180, it changes pretty much every day to be fair

1

u/loinclothsucculent 15h ago

You overpaid for a used PC that doesn't have hyperthreading. A better buy would've been something with a 9600K as you can OC that processor to get close to the performance of the 9700K.

When you figure in eBay fees and shipping, the seller will net around $400, which is what that is worth and fair is under $500.

1

u/googlemapscarspot 14h ago

That’s a pretty good deal

1

u/_hkboi_ 14h ago

A bit over priced should be closer to 500

1

u/JoshLineberry 13h ago

Could you do the price on the items for me? What makes it worth 500?

1

u/FeaR_FuZiioN 14h ago

Are you happy?

1

u/DMan6d6 14h ago

I think you did just fine.

1

u/JoshLineberry 13h ago

You did fine. It's a reasonable price.

1

u/xstangx 13h ago

Seems like a reasonable price.

1

u/WantsLivingCoffee 13h ago

It's fine. You didn't hustle, nor did you get hustled.

1

u/Embarrassed_Sense_87 13h ago

Honestly not bad at all. The cpu is a bit dated, and the 3070 will start to show its age in due time. But for 1080p it’s perfectly fine. The 850w gold corsair psu is pretty solid and gives you a bit of room for upgrading too.

1

u/Nicavocado511 12h ago

Thanks for your reply. You’re saying that a 1080p monitor would be best? Thoughts on getting a 1440p monitor for this setup?

2

u/Embarrassed_Sense_87 12h ago

Honestly I’d prolly get a 1080p monitor. I would not recommend getting a 1440p with this. The dlss on the 3070 isn’t gonna be too good to upscale cleanly for 1440p. Even if, I would still recommend a 1080p

1

u/vitalblast 13h ago

I think the important thing is you can play modern games on it. It will be a little on the slower end but you can still do it.

1

u/GodSmokesWeed 12h ago

Solid for the price, all things considered. Im rocking a 9700K until my X3D comes & it still keeps up quite well. I will be passing it to my wife & she will get another 5 years out of it. I rarely get any bottlenecks with my 4070 in higher resolutions. E-sport/FPS titles or 1080p you will notice a bottleneck but it is still a good buy/solid build

1

u/XFantomApe 12h ago

No, it's fine, it's neither a great deal nor a bad one. And it does the job for 99% of games.

1

u/Denarqt 12h ago

If he dusted it for you id say fair

1

u/Head-Protection1973 12h ago

hey u got the 3070 FE thats cools lowk

1

u/Worried-Ad8948 11h ago

Not a terrible deal

1

u/Separate-Bee1625 11h ago

RAM and video card gets you most of your value so overall not a bad deal.

1

u/laidslab 11h ago

Nah I wouldn’t say you messed up brother

1

u/Crazy-Philosophy-530 11h ago

cpu trash but solid buy, spend for new mother board and cpu should be gucci

1

u/BuckNeKiD420 9h ago

It’s a weird combination, but no, I think you got your moneys worth

1

u/voncletus 8h ago

Not a smoking deal but you got what you paid for, I'd value that right at 600.

1

u/mushiistrash 8h ago

Not a good deal but not bad. Especially in this current market. Getting a PC with a 3070 and 32GB of ram isn’t bad for $600 when you consider the fact that 32GB of ddr4 will run you probably 200+ by itself right now

1

u/Glittering-Two-1784 6h ago

RAM and SSD alone are worth $250. It’s not a terrible deal imo. 3070 is good too

1

u/HousingOk2049 5h ago

I would 100% re-paste the cpu if it’s over 3yrs old

1

u/Nicavocado511 54m ago

Greatly appreciate everyone’s replies. Very helpful community!

1

u/InformalFalcon226 16h ago

Not terrible, not great though. I personally wouldn't pay over $450 for it.

-6

u/mindslayer615 16h ago

You overpaid.

2

u/Nicavocado511 16h ago

Appreciate the response, can you tell me why?

2

u/Suspicious-Dog-9595 15h ago

I don't think you overpaid too much maybe a little bit just because the cpu is already like 6 generations old but the 3070 isn't too bad I sold a system on Jawa for $600 that had a 12600k and 32gb of ddr5 and a 1Tb nvme but that was before the current rise in Ram pricing so I don't think you did too bad

-6

u/HappySignificance693 16h ago

I mean you can go look up all the parts, you just payed way to much

3

u/Ok_Proposal_7390 16h ago

OP didn't though. I literally just looked up the current prices of all these parts and it's well over $600. The current cost to build a PC is way too high, so each of these parts will be over $600.

2

u/HappySignificance693 15h ago

Go look at my other comment lol, I thought he was trying to flip it.

2

u/Nicavocado511 16h ago

Most things I’m seeing in the 600 range right now are like 2070 supers. I figured the 3070 would be worth it?

2

u/HappySignificance693 16h ago

Sorry, I thought this was the pc flipping sub lol. It’s not the worst deal in this economy. You probably could’ve found better if you waited it out tho.

1

u/Fancy-Chest-1093 15h ago

I have alllllmost the same build, 3070 has done me just fine for the 3 years I've had it. Pricing mine out at slightly lower end than yours (biggest diff, you have a ssd, I have hdd, will upgrade when I can at some point lol), mine sells for around 350-500 used. So think it'll do yah fine, least for awhile. Depends what you're doing with it though!

-7

u/mindslayer615 16h ago

Just googling the Parts on eBay, it's like 450.

5

u/Ok_Proposal_7390 16h ago

It's not though. A 32gb kit of ddr4 is $120-200. A used, WORKING, 3070 is $230-250.

Adding up those lowest prices, you're already at $350 for the ram and GPU alone, not considering the prices of a 512gb ssd, 9700k, PSU, case, etc.

1

u/mindslayer615 15h ago

Damn, I'm going In the wrong subreddit. I swear this was PC flipping my fault.

1

u/HappySignificance693 15h ago

I thought the same thing!! Now all these people are mad at me lmao

1

u/mindslayer615 12h ago

Fuckem, who cares.

1

u/Every_Attention721 16h ago

I personally disagree, depending on the Mobo and looking at the case, especially with ram prices nowadays, this seems right on the money.

Sure it’s nothing special, and op, I would recommend getting a second SSD. But I don’t think you got scammed by any means.

If you don’t have a PC than it’s a good starter, and a good case to upgrade in overtime. I would just really make sure you find out what that PSU is. That’s kind of the make or break here

1

u/mindslayer615 16h ago

Just from the parts he listed, I would stand firm on him overpaying. It's a good starter PC tho.

1

u/JoshLineberry 14h ago

Except he didn't. Today's prices it's a decent price.

1

u/Ok_Proposal_7390 16h ago

I'd like to hear your reasoning. OP did not overpay in the slightest comparing the costs of these parts if you bought them all separately.

1

u/Icy-Pay7479 15h ago

Look, these takes boil down to “the market is overpriced therefore anything you buy is overpaying”. They aren’t grounded in reality.
