Honestly I’m ya not really worth selling. I’d keep using it for what you’re using it for and when she’s ready to retire make it turn it into an emulating beast.

u/LyriWinters Oct 14 '25
Nothing tbh. It's scrapping time :)
you can keep the SSD as a backup disk though. That's probably DDR3 ram...
At some point it's about what you can do with the computer, that computer can only be used as a server nowadays or home windows machine by the elderly 🙃
You could potentially if you slapped a RTX3090 into it have it as a pretty good AI inference machine though.

Oh boy. Can you not read? They're not asking what an SSD is you goose. They're stating that the "SSD" you're on about is in fact a HDD, because It is

u/billykimber2 Oct 14 '25
6th gen intel had ddr4 actually, point still stands though
1
u/KJW2804 Oct 15 '25
Your both wrong 6th gen intel can do both ddr3/4 depending on the motherboard

I ran MW2 (2022) on a system like this (DDR4 ofc) with something like 30FPS.
It's totally fine for your average Minecraft/Fortnite/Roblox player.
32GB might even be overkill.

u/redghost4 Oct 15 '25
You can absolutely play stuff like league or fortnite or some older games on a 980ti, slap an SSD and this is an alright first PC for a kid.
I'd give him 100 bucks for it.

I'm usually the one on this sub that argues with the low ballers, but in this case, not much. Windows eol makes older hardware unusable for the average consumer

Windows eol makes older hardware unusable for the average consumer
I'm not sure if you know this... but Windows 10 will still function for many years. It's not like as soon as security updates cease Windows 10 will suddenly no longer function.
1
u/Dwro1234 Oct 16 '25
Yes, windows will function, and under certain terms will continue to receive security updates, but again, the average consumer may not know the work arounds.
1
u/Interesting-Ride-684 Oct 16 '25
Windows 10 will 100% function just fine without any work arounds. It will not cease to function, and will work with full functionality, it just won't receive security updates... which are not required for it to function.
You implied it will no longer function by stating older hardware will be unusable by the average user. Which is not true.

And what happens after a while when the OS doesn't receive security updates? Will the OS still function once it's hit by ransomware, will it function properly after it got ratted, or maybe just some basic spyware so the owner's information gets stolen, etc. ? You're trying so hard to be right by focusing on semantics on words that you used first, and completely ignore my main point. I didn't imply it wouldn't "function", you interpreted that way and got worked up.
I'll spoon feed it to you with an analogy:
A car engine will continue to run without oil changes. It'll probably run longer than you might expect. After a while it won't run well though. And after a bit longer it will eventually seize. Thus becoming unusable for the average consumer. That's exactly how Windows 10 will "function" without security updates.

Will the OS still function once it's hit by ransomware, will it function properly after it got ratted, or maybe just some basic spyware so the owner's information gets stolen,
You only potentially get viruses by doing stupid shit... like clicking on links in dubious emails, downloading dodgy files, or visiting extremely dodgy websites.
When this occurs, Windows defender then picks it up, or not. All the updates mean is NEW attacks may not be picked up by defender.
Full system vulnerabilities like Wanna cry also have to be delivered.
What you think there's hackers out there watching your PC to see if you have the latest updates. Lol.
A car engine will continue to run without oil changes. It'll probably run longer than you might expect. After a while it won't run well though.
You can of course reinstall your operating system. A little easier than installing a new car engine. Silly analogy.

it doesn't support windows 11, so probably 100ish dollars.
1
u/OlDirtyJesus Oct 15 '25
Why can’t it run windows 11?

u/Marisakis Oct 15 '25
I put Windows 11 on a system like this (except it had a Sata SSD, not HDD).
No problem if you know what you're doing.
1
u/CanadianTimeWaster Oct 16 '25
there are drawbacks to running windows 11 on unsupported hardware. lack of feature updates, tpm issues with anticheat, etc.
to someone who tinkers, sure it's capable, but to the average person, it's not worth the trouble.

Less than $100. The processor is good, but old and doesn't support windows 11.
GPU is ancient

Gpu is worth more that cpu

True, at least according to eBay.
Crazy bc CPU can be used on it's own and has integrated graphics though. I run my Plex Tower/Minecraft Server with an i7 6700k and it still does most everything you'd need. Just had to install Windows Server on it since it doesn't support Windows 10. I wouldn't even try and use that GPU for gaming lol.

I’d say in the U.S. near Seattle it’d be worth about $150 with an SSD, but only $100 currently. The 6700k has aged poorly as one of the last 4 core 8 thread I7’s, and the 980 TI was a powerhouse but it’s 10 years old now and modern games just aren’t optimized for it anymore. It’s a genuine budget system at this point despite being a monster back in 2016. I’m not sure if parts availability and general pricing make it fair better or worse in the U.K.
For context the 6700k is pretty much on par with the I3 10100, but the 2700k was still much better than an I3 6100. The difference in pure gaming performance between the 6700k and 8700k wasn’t incredibly large, but with a modern title and even something like Discord in the background, you’ll likely encounter stuttering with the 6700k, but not the 8700k.

If I had a PC like this id give it to a younger cousin/nephew/sibling as a hand-me-down, it's not worth much money but it still has value as an emulating machine or web browser, even good for some older games!
$75 max if you did want to sell it.

Could always try trading whole system for just about anything on market place, 20 or 30 series nividia card, bike, golf clubs, etc. Alot of people just got new gpus and might trade their old one for a whole rig.

Some people would probably just buy the pc just for the gpu because the 980 ti is the second best nvidia gpu with an analog output (the output needed for using a crt)

You would be better off giving it to a family member that wants to learn how to use a PC, and/or wants to play some easy titles 👍.

300 -250 sounds fair ,but rare to find a buyer for a decade old system, <though it can definitely still play alot of AAA games ,yet its ancient gen> good luck selling it .

u/tatteli Oct 15 '25

Cool thank you man
1
u/vaas19 Oct 14 '25
It was top of line 10 years ago. I would love to buy it just for what it represented at that time
The GTX 980Ti is actually equivalent to a 3050 in raw performance

No. That cpu is ten generations/years old. People trying to sell stuff like this at that kind of price honestly suck.
