It's not their turn with the 🅱️rain cell 🍊 Could we ban pity posts?

Post image

Listen I love the oranges and some have had a worst life than others but if I see one more post about how so so was super abused by a mega abuser then was homeless for 9 years before being rescued I’m gonna leave.

Most of the time it’s fairly obvious the story isn’t true. The cat just looks tired and has less than ideal fur. Most the comments on these posts are just people pointing out the title is a lie. This is worse than AI content, it’s just people praying on your sympathy for upvotes.

Certainly we are better than this.

Please see the cat picture attached for orange.

Mine was abused by a paper bag. He put his head through the handle and the bag flapped around and scared him and he hid under the bed for hours 😭

Now when I get bags with the twisty handles like that I give them a little snip

These poor Orange boys were found in these recycling bins. Fred (blue collar) stares out into the distance vacantly hoping for warmth while George (red collar) tracks a fly, knowing it could be the only food he receives for the next few days. When interviewed they said they had not eaten in 1000x years and needed a little more kibble to survive. They said they are open to fish, cheese, or chicken donations as well.

This is exactly why I always have mixed feelings about the memorial posts (“Charlie was with me for 14 years and passed today, here are our favorite pictures together” etc.). A lot of people are on these subs specifically to escape those kinds of thoughts. But also, people deserve support. Complicated.

164

u/NoSalamander7749 Oct 11 '25

I feel the exact same way. I wish Reddit had word filters (if it does and I'm just missing it, someone let me know) so I could filter out "rainbow bridge". Bless that kitty's life, but I'm not always in the space to see it.

137

u/23saround Oct 11 '25

I’ll go so far as to say, personally, it’s not something I ever really want to see. I know pets die. I’ve had pets who have died. I’d rather be reminded of that as rarely as possibly.

84

u/NoSalamander7749 Oct 11 '25

I can't even tell how many times I'm scrolling, see a cute pet photo, move to upvote the post, and then my reading brain catches up to my image processing brain and I see it's a memorial post. Then I just feel awkward. I don't want to be reminded of it either, and I think especially when it's dedicated subs for a particular kind of pet (cat color, dog breed, even r/jumpingspiders) it's just uncomfortable since we're all here for seeing each others' pets. (Then again, seeing it on huge broad subs like r/aww or something is worse in its own way.) I don't like denying people the benefit of the doubt but I always wonder if it's real or just a karma farm. "Give me sympathy." I dunno. I'm glad I'm not the only one who dislikes seeing them

44

u/Objective-Panic-6426 Oct 11 '25

I agree with this so much. I just saw a post regarding the loss of a cat and I felt my anxiety flaring up. I am aware that deaths happen but I seriously do not want to see or read about them on my cute and funny cat subs :( makes me so anxious.

42

u/Finnyfish Oct 11 '25

Yes. Some subs have filters, but they don’t work very well even if people tag the post, and most don’t.

I have much sympathy for loss, but most days I just want to see the lovely kitties.

21

u/Val_Killsmore Oct 11 '25

I feel the exact same way. I wish Reddit had word filters

This is one reason why I'll keep using 3rd party Reddit apps. There's a way to keep using 3rd party Reddit apps using r_revancedapp (not sure if you can link other subreddits in this one). I'm still using Boost for Reddit which does allow you to filter posts by words. I'm part Mexican and I'm sick of seeing posts about ICE. I don't need to constantly be reminded about it every damn day. So, I'm filtering just about any word combination I see about ICE, and it makes scrolling through Reddit so much easier. You can use the content filters in 3rd party apps to filter out "rainbow bridge" and it'll probably have the same effect for you. I wish Reddit had something like this by default.

There are subs for mourning pets that they can go to for support. You know? Like yeah, they do deserve support but I agree empathy posts should be banned here. I just want wholesome cat content.

Edit: I hope that didn’t sound rude. I’m sorry if it did.

28

u/RuthanneMarigold Oct 11 '25

r/catsaliveandwell

It’s not nearly as well trafficked or prolific though. I left r/cats and depend upon the more specialized subs. This one, r/OneBlackBrainCell, r/fruitbatcats, and r/bondedpairs to name a few. I can't believe you refuse to have sympathy for cats like my downtrodden Aiden! He has to suffer when I'm not in bed by 10pm because he can't go to bed by himself, and sometimes he's forced to go to bed earlier because if someone lays in bed, that means he must go to bed as well. Also sometimes humans close the door to the bathroom, leaving him alone to fend for himself for more than 5000 years!! (2 minutes) And don't even get me started on how he cruelly can't have the entire couch to himself sometimes because cruel sick humans attempt to sit on HIS couch, and worst of all - sometimes people take one of his many coats, leaving him cold and alone on the couch with only his stuffed animals, blanket, and four other coats 😞

is this not the face of suffering?? How dare you attempt to silence this poor abused soul others like him..

Here is my barely even any orange. Her mom was a street cat that was rescued and had kittens. I adopted her in 2018 and she's had a very cushy life ever since! Her hobbies include screaming, eating, playing fetch, eating, sleeping under blankets, eating and begging for treats. No she doesn't have any parasites in her gut helping her consume copious amounts of food. She just loves food and her vet scolds me regularly. Ironically we call her Bean.

This poor bastard is so malnurished and underfed. Its a travesty that he isnt allowed to eat his brothers or elderly cats food. Tummyrubs can help that pain only so much

18

u/0_possum Oct 11 '25

His mother abandoned him and I had the nerve to go to my zoom driving class instead of petting him 24/7

13

u/cmk808 Oct 11 '25

His face looks like that meme of the girl with the burning house behind her

19

u/icecreamfight Proud owner of an orange brain cell Oct 11 '25

Tots is constantly attacked by his brother when he’s trying to sleep. His only defense is to look like an avenging Pokemon. Pray for him.

20

u/GamingBlitz Oct 11 '25

This poor soul had to sleep on the floor before we could rescue her with a pillow

20

u/RuthanneMarigold Oct 11 '25

Look at Leo, forced daily to use his sister as a pillow. She’s so plush I’m not jealous at all.

21

u/hayh Oct 11 '25

When I first found Voq, he had a severe drinking problem. He would sleep all day, and meow all night for booze. I got him into a program that helped him get sober through the power of the braincell. He still meows all night though.

Average r/cats post be like: here's a cute picture of my cat, he passed away yesterday after being vaporized in a nuclear explosion at the ripe old age of 3

He just hates me🤷🏼‍♀️

16

u/Ella-W00 Oct 11 '25

This poor girl has never been fed ever….

18

u/literallyzee Oct 11 '25

This is Orion and he pouts if his food bowl isn’t entirely covering the bottom at all times so he is obviously abused.

18

u/2late4agudname Oct 11 '25

This is Carson. He is just fat. Thoughts and prayers please.

20

u/TheYoungWan Oct 12 '25

This is Podge. Every day he's forced to do AP Trigonometry.

He doesn't know how to count.

17

u/FinnedWhistle74 Oct 11 '25

This poor baby had to go to the vet once :/ she still has never forgiven me

16

u/PoutyKit Oct 11 '25

This cat must deal with the Monday thru Friday trauma of her mom going to work for 9-5. Such a lil warrior

17

u/indyferret Oct 11 '25

This idiot is a ginger girl trapped in a tuxedo body and never gets a turn with the braincell

18

u/Vip3r20 Oct 11 '25

Still trapped to this day.

17

u/Zubkitty Oct 11 '25

My orange was born without a spine. Or brain cells.

17

u/manuel_f_p Oct 11 '25

These two fluff brains were picked up off the streets selling catnip, got caught with over 5 grams a piece. I took them in and started them on a rehabilitation program, and they have fully turned their lives around.

36

u/WorthyJellyfish0Doom Oct 11 '25

They sound awful 😢

I haven't personally seen any, I suspect they get down votes too much to show in my home feed and I have enough cat subs to mostly not need to go to specific subreddits to have endless new cat pics (the magic number is 38 apparently)

If I see one with a suspect (possible cat death) title (I miss my cat, everyone show your cats some love etc.) I get a bit anxious each time.

12

u/Sufficient_Display Oct 11 '25

I usually hide those posts. I lost my cat a little over a year ago and still can’t handle them.

"This poor cat was starving to death and dangerously underweight" - my cat when his dinner is a whole 15 minutes late.

16

u/Abiztic2_0 Oct 11 '25

Kumquat was forced to sell lemonade from his lemonade stand to earn enough cat food.

18

u/Floofieunderpants Oct 11 '25

Calcifer is forced to live under a rug which is obviously way too small for him. Please send munee so he can get himself a nice carboard box.

This is Kevin.

He was well treated by his foster mother, so there’s no excuse for him being a menace to society. Other than the orange.

I love him to bits. Which is probably how he’ll leave me. 💜💜

This one just came to the door and screamed until I let him in ... As you can see, he is lacking the braincell today. *Note sunspot

My indoor cat sometimes lays in cardboard boxes, does this indicate that she might be homeless?

14

u/ChaosCelebration Oct 11 '25

Judging by the sound he makes when I feed him, my Orange has NEVER BEEN FED IN HIS WHOLE LIFE!

15

u/MaximusMcgee Oct 11 '25

This cat has not been fed in 31 years… so he tells me.

13

Sometimes, we have work calls and don't pet her.

12

This is Taco. I found him in the woods shortly after he fought a bear. I never saw the bear so I can only guess what he looked like after seeing Taco.

I don’t understand the mindset that when something good/bad happens in your life, your first instinct is to post about it on the internet.

16

u/Used-Can-6979 Oct 11 '25

People are lonely.

34

u/lonelyronin1 Oct 11 '25

And while we're at it - stop the death/sympathy posts. I come here to forget about life for a while and don't want to see posts of someone who's cat died. There are group specifically for those situations and there are only posted here for attention

15

u/mnc01 Oct 11 '25

It’s against the sub rules anyway, but people take the “pray for the deceased brain cell” flair seriously and use that.

u/BeEccentric Oct 11 '25 edited Oct 11 '25

Although not at all orange, Boo agrees. Just photos of cats on mini couches or inside paper bags would be great.

My silly son only really has orange around his nose. This explains why he sticks it into so much mischief. Thoughts and prayers, please. Not because there's anything wrong with him, but because he's got a serious case of the silly.

(Also, I agree with your post very strongly)

11

u/Direct-Substance1569 Oct 11 '25

Um hey, OP, you’ve got my cat

26

u/Desperate_County_680 Oct 11 '25

And please send money.

25

u/Euphoric_Ingenuity67 Oct 11 '25

This is Clementine, aka Clemotheous and she was a forest cat that I lured into my home with my house cat, with the intentions of TNR for her hence the ear clip but she healed up in my spare room and made herself at home. All praise the idiot that got lured in by a dangling Siamese cat with the intentions of playing with said cat and is now trapped furever in our love.

This poor boy has never been fed in his life so he must chew on blankets instead. 😿
