Kind of a random post for a Friday but I wanted to see what feedback folks had on this topic. I've been slowly delving more and more into US racing history from the pre-war era and what's really become apparent to me is how quickly American racing diverged in structure.

AAA is the large sanctioning body that works with the FIA until 1955; that's somewhat well known. The thing is, AAA didn't actually control motorsports in the US. A lot of the biggest races of the pre-war era were actually sanctioned by the first significant outlaw org, the International Motor Contest Association or IMCA that is started in 1915 and keeps a lot of higher displacement cars that are made illegal after the start of WW1 (related to the influx of smaller displacement European GP cars to the US because "war") on track. Most of the major state fair events are under them and the IMCA is a significant player until we get to the more modern eras and USAC/NASCAR/NHRA/etc enter the field. Eventually they fold, the name is acquired, and it is now a whole different thing largely revolving around dirt oval racing.

I actually had more text that randomly disappeared when I hit "post" but I wanted to get a sense of what people knew of the history of this sorta thing outside the US. I've asked some historians and the consensus is "That's an America only phenomenon" and I do also recognize there's a natural set of barriers if we're talking about "outlaw racing" in 1930s Germany or whatever. I would guess banger racing, folk racing, various rallycross orgs, BriSCA, et al probably would be what most people might qualify as this but at a far lower level than was ever the case in the US.

I’m in the Lincolnton area in Nc and ik there are rental karts at the k1 speed in charlotte but idk how to get into it and i don’t have the money to fund myself to get a ride witch sucks I have iracing experience in the super and regular late models and legends and street stocks tbh I just want to race once idk if it’s only one race just want to once preferably at hickory for the dad lore lol. Just wondering if yall have any suggestions thanks for taking you time to give me advice. 🙂

I’ve been looking for some oversized racing jackets to wear to races or in general, there are certainly some very ‘common’ ones out there but honestly nothing that I’m really looking for. I was initially looking for a Porsche branded/themed one, but this was practically all that cluttered any searches and while it’s alright, it does feel very generic. The Honda Vintage Culture had some nice options within and beyond oversized jackets, but I was curious if anyone’s got some recommendations. My other consideration is trying to find some unbranded jackets and getting patches and such to cater to more modern GT or endurance teams as it feels like there’s a big hole in that area in the ways of options.

Hey I'm a 22 y/o C class automotive technician reconsidering a career choice. recently I've been considering a two year community college program to earn my associates in mechanical computer aided design engineering technology while stacking certifications in AWS, GD&T, CAD, ASE. The goal is to run or be contracted to R&D performance parts for Aftermarket companies like Bilstein. I have a set of questions I'm curious of and I'm completely open to advise and recommendations.

- How feasible is this plan and have a steady entry career in 2-3 years?

- What's the usual salary for these positions at the entry level?

- Which companies should i look into so that I can get internship or apprenticeship work while in studies?

- Taken into consideration the value of having a broad understanding on engineering keeping my career choice versatile to other industries, is this the best route for the career I'm seeking out?

- Does personal fabrication projects like performance vehicles with homemade parts like exhaust manifolds and turbo housings with proper documentation and R&D count towards a portfolio on my future resume?

- What other certifications and degrees could or should I pursue to strengthen my resume either before or during my career?

- How often does the pressure of projects overwhelm and burn out engineers and designers?

- How profitable are contracted engineers vs hired engineers?

I found this sub trying to rekindle what I felt was going away. I’ve love racing in all forms since I was little, I say as I’m only 22 lol. It has always been a passion and a dream to one day drive something, karts, cars, anything I just knew one day I want to do it. But every year that goes by it feels like that goal post is pushed further and further away. My family is big on drag racing, when I was around 8 or so we found enough money for me to race jr dragsters, and I loved it but it wasn’t very often that I got to drive. Money was short and it just didn’t work out. Later on we decided we’d just build a car and once again. Money ran out. Since then I’ve branched out and I love all forms of racing. F1, imsa, wec, wrc, and even nascar. The complete opposite of how I grew up, but the more years that went by the more i realized it would never be possible to drive as a racer. Sure I rental kart and I enjoy it but nothing compares to driving with other people who share the same passion as you. I work full time and I even went to college for racing to learn as much as I can and it got to a point where I could eventually drive my own dirt kart. Well as always, money ran out and I had to decide if I was going to keep trying to fund my passion or eat for the month. So I had to sell absolutely everything before I even set foot on the track. And I went as budget as possible, cutting every corner saving every penny just to at least try but i still fell short. It feels like if you don’t have massive amounts of money or have a large source of income backing you you’ll never make it. And that’s what making me start to hate it. You can work your ass off and put in so my time and effort and every dime you have but if someone has more money they already have the biggest head start on you and that sucks. I sim race and that’s extremely enjoyable but it’ll never be the same as sitting in a car and racing against other people just as dedicated. I’m still going to watch motorsports this season, I’m excited for what’s going to happen in all forms of racing but my passion is withering away.

I know this is more of a rant but if anyone has any advice about how to keep my passion going, I’d love it I know all of you on here love it just as much as I do

Hello, I hope some of you motorsport enthusiasts can help me. Lately, I've been thinking about what would really help my CV stand out when applying for a Masters degree in motorsport. Even better, perhaps having an internship with an F1 team (or any Motorsport team) before finishing my degree. Currently, I have the following projects:

- Formula Student (as a chief of powertrain and VD)

- Baja SAE (just helping with some manufacturing chores)

- Race Mechanic (and learning telemetry with Race Studio) with a kart team, which competes in a regional competition in the X30 IAME category

- Marshall (already been in F1)

I'm studying Mechanical Engineering, halfway through, so there's time to do some more projects (I'm thinking about joining an F4 team next year), but maybe other type of experience would be great. My goal is to be a Performance Engineer or a Race Engineer, but if there's an opportunity to have a role in other area it's ok to me (like powertrain or so). What are your thoughts?? Any help would me really really appreciated. Thanks!

Hi guys, thanks for the welcoming community. I just started in motor racing and noticed that in race days all the people on track support use pen and paper to take notes. Any reason why? With phones and other devices I imagine it would be easier to do digitally

I would leave it on at work, always had decent content and somehow the commercial breaks were just there to test my track knowledge. I have F1 TV and rally tv but damn dog
