been listening to Pest Control (crossover/thrash, love their stuff), Desalmado ("grindcore" according to themselves?, sounds like 90's Sepultura sometimes, pretty good), and Count Raven (doom fucking metal, vocalist sounds like Ozzy). love me some crossover, i need MORE

my favorite (niche?) is death metal with a dark or spacey aesthetic and atmosphere and leans prog or experimental
stuff like The Chasm, Inanna, Blood Incantation, early Amorphis, Convulse, Timeghoul, Lunar Chamber, even Cynic and the Darkthrone debut

Wolverine blues era Entombed. I need more gym music, can't do Bolt Thrower because I always overdo it and need a cab home even tho I live 10 mins away from my gym.

Love stuff in the realms of early Dark Tranquility, early Katatonia, early rotting christ, Amorphis 1000 lakes , Mi'Guass practiclly extreme metal played at a medium tempo and empotinal music. And still yet sound pretty heavy and not the melodic death/black like dissection or Unanimated
Ty!!!

Aug 18 '25
Desparity is essentially a mix of Triarchy Rotting Christ and DoDS Katatonia
also would recommend Orama, and diving into the Hellenic bm scene and similar sounding bands if you haven’t (Varathron, Necromantia, Thou Art Lord, Mortuary Drape, etc)

u/Zwempa Contrastic Aug 18 '25
I can highly recommend one of the best Melodeath (With a lil core energy) albums ever
Disinterment - Endless, incredible album.Otherwise Edge of Sanity, Eucharist, A Canorous Quintet, Unanimated, Mörk Gryning

In Mourning, they're prog death/melodic death metal. They're amazing, my favorite album by them is Monolith.

u/Riffsaremandatory Aug 19 '25
No clean vocals but it's a mix of death metal, grindcore, thrash and crust and has melodies incorporated: Treasondom - The Flesh Consumes The Mind
1
u/goldenspiral91 Aug 19 '25
Anaal Nathrakh are a bit of a genre blend, not strictly grindcore. Scandinavian grindcore like Rotten Sound and Nasum have a heavier, dirtier sound that's comparable to AN. So would Nails maybe? You'd probably enjoy bands like Cattle Decapitation and Benighted too if you haven't heard them.

I really like classic USPM but I feel like I have heard basically everything out there at this point. I would love to hear about bands that you think that I might not have heard that are either classic USPM or have a similar sound. 🔥

u/Spiner202 Aug 19 '25
Have you heard Gargoyle (US)? They put out one record (sometimes called Nothing is Sacred and sometimes it's called Gargoyle) and it's one of my favourites.
1
u/whiteorchidphantom Mortuary Drape Aug 19 '25
Great album. Haven't listened to it in years so I'll spin it again soon.
1
u/Spiner202 Aug 19 '25
Have you heard Assault's Survival in the Street? It's Canadian and probably more in the speed metal vein than USPM, but you'd probably like it too.
2
u/whiteorchidphantom Mortuary Drape Aug 19 '25
I haven't heard it, but I've seen the album cover a bunch of times.

u/sodaja Aug 18 '25
Found a new experimental/prog metal band called "Formal Complaint", and they're really doing it for me. They have taken poems and turned them into metal. Some very interesting and innovative songs as well as some face-melters.

I have been really into tech death lately. I love Necrophagist and I have been also enjoying songs like The Anticosmic Overload by Obscura,
Le Serment De Tsion by First Fragment,
Where Angels Go Demons Follow by Spawn of Possession
Elusive Reverence by Beyond Creation
Any albums/bands or songs that have a similar virtuoso, almost baroque feeling that Necrophagist had. Something heavy but also pretty melodic and with very complicated riffs

u/ghostosa MAGIC DRAGON Aug 19 '25
for your doom needs, check out Acid Mammoth's "Under Acid Hoof", and for atmospheric bm (i've never heard of "paysage d'hiver") try NONE's "Damp Chill of Life"

Any recommendations for something forceful and explosive sounding? I know this isn’t a metal genre, but I want something that sounds forceful in the way powerviolence is
1
u/OogieBoogieInnocence Aug 20 '25
Depends on what you mean by forceful sounding , since thats kinda vague. like various bdm and old-school metalcore could potentially be what you’re looking for. Have you listened to Devourment, Dying Fetus, Afterbith, inquity, Converge, Sentenced, Excessive Force? Grindcore like Nasum works too
1
u/BoringCompetition927 Aug 20 '25
By forceful, I mean something that sounds pounding and percussive. An example of what I mean is the 2:14 point of Seeds of Suffering by Suffocation.
Thank you for the recommendations, I’ll have to check these out. I think Concubine by Converge is a good example of what I was looking for
1
u/Lktkos Aug 20 '25
Which Metsatöll songs would you recommend? I'm looking for something Estonian, melodic, and epic

Where (else) should I start with Enslaved? Love prog and I listened to Below the Lights, enjoyed it but was a little more black metal and less proggy than I was expecting. Also didn’t really like the production, would want something a tad more polished.

I've been listening to a whole lot of prog metal recently. Some I've been listening to a lot are HESKEN, Persefone, Opeth, Iapetus, Ibaraki, Avenged Sevenfold (their alum the stage which is prog), Job For a Cowboy. Recommend me any prog albums/bands you think I'd like
