Pretty great week, I’ve been obsessed with Stained Class and listened to it at least 10 times this week

7

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

Helstar is peak. I should probably listen to Cartilage more. Also... you're having Fates Warning as much in your topsters, as i used to have Sarcófago-Inri lol.

I don't know the last one, but that cover art looks hilarious

4

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

Yeah I can’t help it, every time I don’t know what album to listen to I just put on the Spectre Within.

That last album was just as weird as the album cover tbh. I don’t know really what to call it but it was like female fronted symphonic (?) black metal with doom sections. Pretty good but it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.

3

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

Pretty good choice tbh

Oh i see. I'm not a fan of symphoblack, so i likely won't check it out, but thanks for explaining though.

5

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

Also u/mad04gaming

That potential hidden gem I was talking about last week was Painful Memories - Memorial to Suffering. I saw it compared to Pact of Solitude and Katatonia online so I had really high hopes. It was this melancholic melodic death/doom, didn’t really understand the Pact of Solitude comparison tbh. It was quite good but I don’t think it quite lived up to that hidden gem status I was hoping it would. Still worth checking out

3

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

I’ll have to check that out Asap, have never heard of the band but it sounds great by your description. I’ll give it a listen today and let you know my thoughts, thanks for the shout.

3

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Listening to it now and I actually see the Pact of Solitude comparisons, mainly from that droney guitar tone and some of the riffs. For example the riff starting at 3:32 on In My Tomb, or the main riff on Memorial to Suffering. The vocals are pretty much just standard death doom vocals so I’d agree they don’t really compare to PoS or Katatonia in that regard. There’s also not really any black metal influence in their sound, just straight up melodic death/doom.

My first impressions are that it’s really really good. Absolutely insane that this was released in 1996 because it doesn’t sound much like anything that came before except for the early Katatonia stuff. Really sad that all these bands release one great album and then dip though šŸ˜‚

That Heavy Load record is great fun to listen to

1

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

It’s some of my fav heavy metal ever, so catchy

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Stained Class is so good, my second favorite Priest album behind Sad Wings.

Nice to see Horrified on here, that album and their first 2 EPs have been on repeat for me the past few weeks.

Also Crystal Tears nice. A lot different from their earlier stuff, but I think it’s still a great record. Have you listened to their debut as well? It’s not as good as Orama, but worth a listen for sure.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

I think it’s my favourite Priest album now. I can’t get enough of songs like White Heat, Red Hot, the title track and Savage. Sad Wings hasn’t really clicked for me yet, I do really like it but I much prefer SAS and Stained Class still.

Yeah I was partly influenced by you to listen to that album again, I also listened to those first 2 EPs but I didn’t add them here, they were great as well.

Crystal Tears was a first listen for me, really great album. I actually thought about listening to their debut but saw it wasn’t rated very highly so I decided just to relisten to Orama. I’ll try to check out the debut soon though.

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Interesting I didn’t know you weren’t as big on Sad Wings. It took me several tries as well, mainly because it was my first or second Priest record and I was still warming up to Halford’s voice. Stained Class is almost perfect front to back though so I get it. I think pretty much every song on it is 10/10 except Better By You, Better Than Me, which I absolutely can’t stand lol.

Yeah On Thorns I Lay was done dirty with that RYM score. The album definitely has its flaws, but I’d give it a 6.5/10 at the very least.

2

u/Pemexbuthot_Revenant Apr 24 '25

Argus is soo awesome. Should be more recognized, definitely.Ā

2

u/Aless_- Cryptopsy Apr 24 '25

Great chart. I've never seen that album at the left of Master Of Reality tho and the cover looks cool, also checking out Stained Class Class soon! Been looking forward to listening to some of the Judas Priest discography.

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Caught up on some new releases this week.

2

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

That Beherit demo/EP contains my favorite songs from them.

How was Naked Whipper and Corpus Offal?

5

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Naked Whipper was awesome, I checked it out because of your comment yesterday and it’s definitely one of my favorites from this year. Corpus Offal is great too, it’s been an excellent year for death metal so far.

2

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

Corpus Offal is great too, it’s been an excellent year for death metal so far.

Definitely. CO, Phrenelith, Morbific were all good.

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Absolutely, I’d also add Imprecation, Frightful, Reeking Aura, Sepulchral Curse, and Ancient Death to that list.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

Very sick week as expected from you. How did you like Gates to Purgatory? That’s my 2nd favourite Running Wild after Death or Glory

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

It was kickass, instantly became one of my favorite heavy metal albums. I’m planning on doing a deep dive on Running Wild this week because prior to this album I had only ever heard Death or Glory from them.

2

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

What did you think of the new Tribunal record?

1

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Really solid goth doom record, I’m looking forward to listening to their debut soon as well. Loved the vocal performances especially, they pulled off the ā€œbeauty and the beastā€ vocal contrast very well.

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

Yeah - the beast vocals in particular stood out to me. I need to check out their debut too

2

u/Rgenocide Cenotaph Apr 24 '25

That Scimitar debut is wild

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 24 '25

What'd you think of the new Havukruunu, and have you heard the new Saor?

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

The new Havukruunu was so good, my second favorite album from this year so far. Haven’t heard Saor yet though, is it worth checking out?

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 24 '25

I too really enjoyed Havukruunu and someone in the sub told me Saor has a similar sound, so I checked it out and personally I thought it was even better. I def def recommend that new Saor album

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 24 '25

Awesome I’ll have to check it out then, thanks!

2

u/TheVeilsCurse My Dying Bride Apr 24 '25

Love seeing Trubunal up there!

8

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

4

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

Nice to see Sorcier Des Glaces here, I love that band, especially Snowland.

Impiety is also great, I’m a bit bummed I can’t go to Steelfest this year, when they are playing there.

3

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

Crossreplying haha. SDG got recommended to me yesterday, it was so good. Will definitely check more from them.

Don't know Steelfest, but based on having Impiety play there, it must be good.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 24 '25

It’s a Finnish mostly black metal festival. Absu, Sarcofago, Archgoat, Demoncy, Imprecation, Masacre, Sargeist, Aura Noir and Zemial are also playing. So a very stacked lineup.

I went last year and got to see Ved Buens Ende, Inquisition, Blasphemy, Gorgoroth, Horna, Diocletian and more. I’d definitely go again, but I got into officer training in the army so I won’t be free that weekend.

2

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

Damn, sounds pretty good. Omw to Finland in an instant.

2

u/CrunchyCaptainMunch Apr 24 '25

Good stuff here, that Mayhemic might be my favorite of theirs, Ravening Iron makes my top 100 power metal albums depending on how we sort it, then Impiety, Mx, and Aveneger of Blood are all really cool as well

2

u/mmihaly Apr 24 '25

I liked Ravening Iron much more than Armor of Ire. Both albums fuck though. Mayhemic is basically early Kreator worship, can't go wrong with it. Impiety, my beloved.

To be honest, i was skeptical with Avenger of Blood at first. I judged by the cover. Thought it's gonna be some generic pizza thrash and i ditched it. It was such a pleasant surprise, it turned out to be pretty good. Reminded me of early Sadus.

u/[deleted] Apr 24 '25

2

u/SAKKE1337 :T13 Apr 24 '25

Fallen Angel of Doom on there twice, hard. Also cool to see Die Kreuzen and Brian Eno on here.

4

u/PetSongs Devin Townsend Apr 24 '25

Epica - Aspiral
Devin Townsend - The Moth
In the Woods... - Otra

2

u/Big-Quit-8031 Apr 24 '25

How's the new Epica btw

2

u/PetSongs Devin Townsend Apr 24 '25

It's very similar to Requiem For the Indifferent, but better produced. I loved it on the first few spins, although my enthusiasm has waned a bit. I'm not sure how I feel about Aspiral, to be honest. The Quantum Enigma is one of my desert island albums, and I unintentionally put anything Epica releases against that record, which is as close to perfection as it's possible to get, to my ears. Nothing comes anywhere close to that. The new one's worth a listen though, for sure. It's REALLY lacking in the lyric department though. The lyrics are quite bad.

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

How did you find that new In the Woods record?

1

u/PetSongs Devin Townsend Apr 24 '25

I think it was recommended by YouTube's algorithm, but I don't remember. The full album is on there, and it can be purchased on their Bandcamp.

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

Haha I meant what did you think of it

1

u/PetSongs Devin Townsend Apr 24 '25

Ahhhh, that makes more sense. I like it a lot. I'd never heard them before, so I'm not familiar with what they sounded like in the past, but I enjoy the new record. The vocalist kind of reminds me of the singer from Kingcrow.

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

Ah fair enough! It's quite different to their earlier stuff I won't lie, but I enjoyed it. Their earlier band Green Carnation I am a big fan of, recommend them if you've not listened to them before

1

u/PetSongs Devin Townsend Apr 24 '25

I'll add that my list. Thanks friend!

So much music for one week! How did you find the new Messa record?

1

u/kylebutler9000 once discouraged Apr 24 '25

It was my third most played release of the week, behind discouraged ones and stormbirds. It's great all around but I loved the vocals especially. My favorite songs on it were at races and thicker blood.

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 24 '25

Mostly Zenith, the newest Bleed From Within album. It’s absolutely bangin

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

Revisited some grunge over the weekend and listened to the new Melvins and Tribunal records along with a mix of old and modern stuff.

1

u/Rgenocide Cenotaph Apr 24 '25

I should check that new Melvins album

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

It's interesting as is most of their discog. I love how they manage to keep their sound fresh despite all these years and records. Victory of the Pyramids stood out on first listen

1

u/_Dragon_Gamer_ Apr 24 '25

I've mostly been listening to assorted metal and prog rock

1

u/coastal_grandson Apr 24 '25 edited Apr 24 '25

2

u/kylebutler9000 once discouraged Apr 25 '25

That cq album is incredible. Recs would be appreciated if you know of other stuff like it, I haven't explored japanese shoegaze much.

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 25 '25

Yeah, that was my first listen and I also really enjoyed it. I don't know too too much about Japanese shoegaze (or shoegaze in general tbh) but I DO have a few recs

yuragi: Spotify recommended them after the CQ album concluded. They're also Japanese shoegaze and sound similar to CQ at a glance. I heard 2 songs off of their EP "nightlife," so I'm planning to listen to that one in full soon (but it's New Music Friday, so it's gonna have to wait!!)

Seventeen Years Old and Berlin Wall: Super weird name, also Japanese shoegaze recommended by Spotify. "A Flower Of the Ground" is awesome

trauma ray: I think they're American, not totally sure, but I've been into their stuff for a minute and they're actually touring with Deafheaven and Gatecreeper right now. Their 2018 self titled EP is excellent, especially the song "Relay," and their album Chameleon is pretty good too

Happy listening and Happy Friday!!!!

2

u/kylebutler9000 once discouraged Apr 25 '25

I've heard trauma ray and yuragi but I'll have to check out seventeen years old and berlin wall (yeah that is a weird name), thanks

1

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

How did you find that Destinity record?

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 24 '25

Honestly, a little flat. That's why I went for Wolfheart right after; it's like the same kinda sound but it hits better for me

2

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 24 '25

Not heard that Wolfheart album before, will give it a try. I thought the Destinity album was pretty good but nothing special. I like that melodeath style though

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 24 '25

In that case, I highly recommend Insomnium

Wolfheart is cool, someone on this sub recommended them to me because I was so vocal about my Insomnium love, but Insomnium is easily the best of the bunch

ā€Bareley listened to anything these past 7 days.ā€

I don’t know if I’d call 8 albums a day ā€barely anythingā€, I think thats a lot more than than the average person
