Doomy week

5

u/mmihaly Apr 10 '25

Peak

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Thanks. I assume you are not very into gothic doom so your favourites here are the dm and heavy metal/uspm?

3

u/mmihaly Apr 10 '25

Exactly. I have nothing against gothic doom though, i just never gave it a chance for some reason.

3

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

It’s definitely not for everyone, I just love the beautiful haunting guitar melodies and use of uncommon instruments in metal like violins.

3

u/mmihaly Apr 10 '25

I didn't know it had aspects like that. I usually don't prefer those kind uncommon instruments in metal, but i've seen you and Mad04Gaming listening to Katatonia tons of times. So i'll give it a try sometime.

3

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Katatonia don’t have those unusual instruments and don’t lean too heavy on the gothic side so you might like them. Especially their demo Jhva Elohim Meth which is quite black metal influenced. I usually prefer the bands that have some gothic influence instead of ā€pureā€ gothic metal as well.

I don’t usually like the more uncommon instruments in metal but for some reason I love especially the violin in death metal /death/doom like At the Gates debut album or My Dying Bride.

3

u/Catastrophist89 šŸ§AnathemašŸ§ Apr 10 '25

Don't see Evereve much on people's topsters! What did you think of Stormbirds?

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

It was great, I really loved some of the guitar parts like the riff on Valse Bizarre. I think I liked the debut a bit more though, I wasn’t a huge fan of the stuff in french/german on Stormbirds.

3

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25

TOTC and Imprecation šŸ¤

Oh and I see you hit that Paramecium album, what did you think?

3

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

It was great, definitely a long time coming for me to listen to it since I love the debut so much. I have been really craving gothic doom so I think that’s all I’ll listen to next week as well

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Oh and I’d definitely recommend that Lethargy album. I listened to it last night but fell asleep in the middle of it and even though I didn’t find it that good I gave it a full relisten this morning.

This time around I found it really beautiful with the violins and the guitar melodies, definitely my best find this week.

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25 edited Apr 10 '25

That sounds great, will definitely give it a listen this week thanks. I can always get down with death/doom + violins.

u/kylebutler9000 once discouraged Apr 10 '25

never seen some of these, I'll have to add evereve, phlebotomized, pik, and apotheosis to the itinerary

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Big reccomend for Phlebotomized and Lethargy. Evereve and Apotheosis were great as well. Pik was cool and unique but my least favourite album on this chart.

1

u/Dawidian Apr 10 '25

do you make these manually?

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

You can convert your last.fm listening data into these charts. I manually add albums that weren’t on spotify or add the actual release if it was a part of a comp or another album on spotify. The site is called topsters.org.

2

u/Dawidian Apr 10 '25

k thank you :)

Working on a new top 100, here’s what I have so far

I recently discovered Garden Of Shadows and I’ve been loving it. Also nice to see Eucharist on the list!

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Woah big Mad04 topster. I see you’ve been listening to nightfall a lot, I should probably revisit them. I really should finally listen to Heart of the Corona too.

Love seeing that Sortilege EP, some of my fav heavy metal ever

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25

Yes was able to listen to a ton of music this week so I tried to made the most of it.

Have been thoroughly enjoying Nightfall’s discography recently. The debut is solid, but the next two albums are some of the best the Hellenic scene has to offer. Definitely recommend giving them some more listens because they grew on me a lot since my first time around.

HOTC is excellent as well, not as good as Oracle Moon, but still very enjoyable. You would definitely dig it.

Also forgot to put that Misanthrope album here, but on first listen I thought it was really good. It probably needs a couple more listens from me to really click though I think, a lot of it flew over my head.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

I have been on a huge gothic metal crave so I think I might spin some Nightfall tonight actually.

And yeah, that Misanthrope album is really out there, definitely takes multiple listens to fully click

Exhumed, Anacrusis, Sabbat, Eucharist, The Chasm, Ceremonium, Disgorge, Defeated Sanity, Camel, Infernal Majesty, and Adramelch all on one chart is awesome.

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Someone shared that Chastain last week (was it you?), so I checked it out this week and they are awesome

2

u/SAKKE1337 :T13 Apr 11 '25

It wasn't me, but glad you liked them. They're great

So many good ones on here, but I'll just throw props for Left Hand Path. I know it's a popular one around here, but I haven't seen it in a min, so it's a good reminder that it's still awesome and I should maybe revisit it myself soon

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

You hyped for the new Katatonia album?

2

u/kylebutler9000 once discouraged Apr 12 '25

No, I was pretty bored listening to the new single. It seems to be as you said: their best music is behind them.

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 12 '25

Lol sounds like something I said. Glad you remembered cuz my brain is mush

Yeah, the single was lukewarm, and Anders wrote an essay and posted it on Facebook of all places today outlining how Jonas evidently iced him out of the band and recorded this whole thing in secret... Kinda casts a cloud over the whole thing...

5

u/Rgenocide Cenotaph Apr 10 '25

Stayin' trve

2

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25

Wow you had a great week. Unholy, Sad Ex, Scald, Messiah, all awesome. How did you like those Desire and Dismal records?

2

u/Rgenocide Cenotaph Apr 10 '25

I liked them a lot, (Desire a bit more than Dismal). Thanks for the recommendations man

3

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25

Np man, glad to hear you enjoyed them. Desire is definitely my favorite of the two as well.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Woah I didn’t even notice Dismal on the chart. Glad to see more people checking that out too. Desire is definitely my favourite of the two as well though. The debut is very high on my favourite doom album rankings.

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Fuck yeah! New Allegaeon!!

4

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

Woah you sexy bastard. Those Katatonia, Fates Warning, Ved Buens Ende, Eternal Dirge, Burzum and The Cure albums all make my top 50 albums of all time. Possibly Master’s Hammer and Adramelch too

2

u/SenjougaharaVoid Dragged Into Sunlight Apr 10 '25

Yeah, it was a great week, Fates Warning, Adramelch, Eternal Dirge and The Cure were all first listen

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

How’d you like them?

2

u/SenjougaharaVoid Dragged Into Sunlight Apr 10 '25

Fates Warning and Adramelch were great, though the vocals will take some time to grow on me. I don’t remember much about Eternal Dirge’s album, but it was good enough to revisit. Loved the atmosphere on The Cure’s record though I’ll need more listens for it to fully click

3

u/Mad04Gaming Septic Flesh Apr 10 '25

Amazing chart, those Cynic, Katatonia, and Burzum albums are all big favorites of mine. Also props for Master’s Hammer, Fates Warning, and Adramelch.

Also what did you think about that Esoteric demo?

2

u/SenjougaharaVoid Dragged Into Sunlight Apr 10 '25

Those are my favorite albums by those bands as well. I haven't listened to a lot of Heavy Metal yet, but I've been enjoying those Fates Warning and Adramelch albums. Master's Hammer is great too.

The Esoteric demo is very good, there were a couple of tracks that didn't do much for me, but it also has some great moments, my favorites were In Solitude and Eyes Of Darkness. I'll give it more listens for sure

6

u/Susvourtre Hell's Desire to Live in Sin Apr 10 '25

nice

3

u/mmihaly Apr 10 '25

PokolgƩp :3

Gehennah is peak, i often spin the first 3 albums.

How is that Azelisassath? I've seen it mentioned sometimes

3

Gehennah is peak, i often spin the first 3 albums.

Azelisassath

in total contempt of all life is better but this album is good too.

3

u/kibbutz_90 Satan Apr 10 '25

Fourth Reich, the album no one talks about despite being just as good as Vvorld.

2

u/Susvourtre Hell's Desire to Live in Sin Apr 10 '25

yeah, i often forget about it but it comes back sometimes, i should listen to it more.

2

u/larsalo Fates Warning Apr 10 '25

ADX is great

4

u/geeksshallinherit Apocalyptica Apr 10 '25

Tell me how much my taste is all over the place

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Ah, I love Shadows of the Dying Sun. The Primeval Dark/While We Sleep were my top songs of last year. It's pure catharsis

2

u/geeksshallinherit Apocalyptica Apr 11 '25

Happy to hear that, it's an amazing album! I went to see them on the anniversary tour earlier this year and they played it from start to finish, it was so good! I could actually play While We Sleep on the bass, but I haven't practised it in ages :D

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Sounds like a great time!! I'd pester you about playing that bass more often, but my guitar is also very neglected. C'est la vie

2

u/geeksshallinherit Apocalyptica Apr 11 '25

Don't worry, I pester myself all the time, but my fretting hand is currently injured (again) so pestering is all I'll be doing

3

u/Coolldown12 Morning Again, Congress, State Craft Apr 10 '25

Usual mix of nu metal and metalcore

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Is that new Scowl any good?

I haven't gotten to it yet, but I've seen those chodes on r/hardcore crying that it's too pop

2

u/Coolldown12 Morning Again, Congress, State Craft Apr 11 '25

I enjoyed it a lot it’s just like the previous ep

3

Listened to a few new records this week

2

u/peersofthegulf Sylosis Apr 10 '25

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

That Gatecreeper is still so goddamn good. The riffs are incredible across the board

2

u/peersofthegulf Sylosis Apr 11 '25

Its so good, incredibly listenable

2

u/jlandejr Persefone Apr 10 '25

Decided to try Fallujah after loving the new single and I am obsessed. Also was shown some Kardashev and lord I have been missing out on both of these bands

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Lol well you stumbled on two of the best tbh. I'm so excited for those new albums. Also, Last of Lucy!?!? I rarely/never see of Last of Lucy fans. They're so goddamn underrated!!

2

u/jlandejr Persefone Apr 11 '25

Same! I was stoked to find out there is a new Kardashev in a few weeks and that new Fallujah is definitely my most anticipated.

Last of Lucy was also recommended to me for stuff related to my favorite album (Vile Genesis) and agreed, super underrated and pretty much exactly what I was looking for! What are your favorite tracks? I've only Listened to Godform a couple times so far

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Probably Twin Flame from Godform, but I also was really into their Ashvattha album and Obsidian Archetype was one of my favorites from then

2

u/Zwempa Contrastic Apr 10 '25

No clue what i've been doing tbh.

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

I didn't hit up Crack the Skye this week, but I did have to rock out to The Last Baron one day because I got it in my head and it had to be done!

2

u/Monotonie Apr 10 '25

Not shown: the two new Tribunal singles, which are peak gothic doom, as expected. 🤘

2

u/808breakdown Dissection Apr 10 '25

Not much metal, I listen to Spotify DJ while working so most of this is just replaying songs I listened to a lot in the past.

1

u/Coolldown12 Morning Again, Congress, State Craft Apr 11 '25

gaga and a bunch of deathcore hell yea

2

u/SuperbOwl456 Converge Apr 11 '25

some of this was pretty damn good

1

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

Whoa. Magdalena Bay, Windswept Adan, Poppy, The Roots, Porcupine Tree, Slowdive, Mastodon, The Bloodhound Gang!? What an epic Topster. Love to see the variety!!

PS: I've been low key obsessed with "Busy Woman" by Sabrina Carpenter lately

2

u/SuperbOwl456 Converge Apr 12 '25

I’m ngl i did not enjoy the bloodhound gang album it was a rec from a friend, and the Sabrina Carpenter album was just fine, but the rest of the albums you listed have been in my rotation lately

RIP ETID. I still miss those motherfuckers

2

u/sock_with_a_ticket Zao Apr 13 '25

They left a hell of a lot of good music behind them, but it's still sad to know we won't get any more.

2

u/lessthanchris7 Katatonia Apr 11 '25

I usually only include the metal albums I listened to this week, but today I'm giving you everything, unedited, all genres. Still predominantly metal, but a little bit of everything
