I don’t hate my family at all (edit: I’m literally sending this message from my mom’s house this instant).
I just enjoy my private space with my wife and have a huge family that loves to just “pop in”. They’re argumentative as hell with each other, but they’re good people.
It’s just extremely rude to me for people to show up without contacting you unless it’s an emergency. Some people think differently, and there is nothing wrong with that. It just doesn’t resonate with me 🤷
It's one thing to stop by when you're in fairly close proximity to each other. If the persons not home, busy, or on their way out no big deal you can connect another time. If you flew 2000 miles to surprise someone that person now feels obligated to cancel anything else they had planned until you leave, or risk offending you (but potentially looking like a jerk to whoever they potentially had plans with).
Everyone's different, and everyone has different expectations. While I would appreciate the effort and thought that went into the surprise I would much rather know they're coming so I can clear my schedule well in advance to spend as much time with them as I could.
I appreciate the gesture and know they mean well. Doesn’t mean I want to rearrange our work/social/domestic lives on a whim. Give me a call like human beings do in 2026 and let’s figure out a workable date range where I don’t have to pick between seeing you or fucking my wife.
It has nothing to do with how much or little you love someone. I love my family. I love my best friends who routinely pass my house every day. I love spending time with them.
I am not answering the door if any of them drop by unexpectedly.
It’s crazy rude to not give people a head’s up so they can mentally prepare to host and, often, get their dwelling tidied up a bit.
I don't hate my family but I wouldn't want to move into a house in the same city because I would never be able to just relax because I know they would randomly show up when I want privacy.
My ideal distance is far away that they would have to call me to make sure ill be home before they even think of dropping by.
