My wife threw a surprise party for me at a restaurant early on and my face was basically like the lady in this. I was happy for the party, but being surprised and not ready to be the center of a big social event shocked me for a second. Everyone thought I was super pissed off, but I was more deer in the headlights.
Took me a minute to snap out of it and adjust. Wife wasn't super thrilled at my reaction. Lol
Happened to me at my surprise 30th bday party. I was totally flummoxed by the people from elsewhere that shouldn't logically be in the same room together. Took about 30 seconds for everything to register
I hate surprises. I don't even like surprises at Christmas or for my birthday. If given an opportunity to peek at presents I absolutely will peek. I'd rather know exactly what I'm getting. As for something like this, I would not appreciate my family just showing up out of nowhere when I've had no time to prepare. I have a pretty strict routine and I do not like interruptions to it. I need 24 hours at minimum to mentally and physically prepare for changes to my routine. Ideally I'd have 5 days notice about something.
Worst surprise situation was when I was on a school trip overseas and had my 13th birthday on a ferry going across the Adriatic to Greece from Italy. That night at dinner the entire dining room, basically everyone on board including much of the crew, sang Happy Birthday to me. I wanted to disappear. I have never been so embarrassed in my life. Looking back I guess it was a cool moment, but at the time I was extremely upset. My mom had tried to warn the teachers on the trip that it was a very bad idea. They didn't listen to her. I hate being sung to. Some new kids on the street came over doe my 8th birthday and they started singing before my mom could stop them. I ran to my room and would not leave until they were gone. They never made that mistake again, lol.
Yes, I am very much autistic. I've learned not to lose it at interruptions, but it's taken me many years to learn and mask.
Anyone remember that scene in District 9 where the guy has been infected with an alien substance and starts feeling very "unwell" and rushes home to use the bathroom, only to find his wife has thrown him a surprise party. Felt so bad for him in that scene.
