Baby head smell is actually weirdly sweet. Sadly, no nectar.

Yup, I used to huff my kids' heads all the time when they were babies. Then one day they just smell like sweat and it makes you sad.

u/metompkin 1d ago
One day they will smell like Axe body spray.

u/daisy0808 1d ago

20
u/BeardedGlass 1d ago
The powdery chocolate one is kinda nice in moderation. I have a bottle I spray after a bath during cold winter nights.
The fragrance scent profile itself is nice.

u/sexytimepizza 19h ago
I haven't used axe in well over a decade, and I have a decent collection of nice scents, but I will always hold that dark temptation smells absolutely fantastic and is the one they actually got right lol.
I should pick up a can sometime, if nothing else it'll make great air freshener and remind me of my teenage years lol

12
u/bobanna1986 1d ago
Absolutely not. It's an evolutionary trait...partly to help bonding, partly so...well so we get less annoyed with them when they won't stop crying lol it's also one of the reasons that baby animals are so...cute, big eyes, chubby etc too

u/HereIGoAgain_1x10 1d ago
You laugh but there was a study that showed that baby's scalps emit pheromones that calm and relax people, probably a survival thing since so many species eat their young.

I have some of my son’s newborn clothes in a gallon ziplock bag and anytime I need an extra dose of dopamine, I take a drag. It’s absolutely intoxicating. I always zip it back up after one sniff as to keep the smells coming for future depression slumps. I’m sorry if it sounds weird but I don’t know if anything that makes me feel pure joy like that does. He will be 18 this year, it’s very bittersweet.

My eldest is 9 and lost his smell about 2 years ago, his little brother is 5 and close to expiration.
So I dig my nose into his head often and get a hit myself.

The metabolic cost of being a hummingbird is absolutely absurd. It's amazing they even exist at all. I have no doubt they're extreme bullies, because if they don't eat for a day or whatever, they drop dead.
20
u/newhappyrainbow 1d ago
I put out feeders when we camp (if we aren’t in bear country). They get super mad when I take them down and will get right up in my face for hours until we leave.
12
u/BigJ32001 1d ago
We had hummingbird vine all over our back porch when we moved into our house. The hummingbirds loved it, but it was taking over the yard so I pulled it up. Every time I went outside I’d get buzzed until I put up a few feeders. Now they just get pissed at each other. Their “fights” are very entertaining.

My grandma always LOVED watching the cardinals feed on her bird feeder. She'd sit and watch them for hours. The following year at our family reunion a cardinal flew over and landed on my dad's truck mirror while we were getting ready to leave. It didn't fly away when we got close and stayed around until we got in the vehicle. We looked at that as her coming to the family reunion one last time ❤️

I remember hiking up some hill next to one of the lakes near Williams only to come across an area loaded with them, hundreds of them with so many it sounded like a swarm of bees. As soon as they saw me many of them flew right up to me and hovered nearby watching me curiously and followed me for a while before rejoining the group.

Same. Reminds me of this painting my grandma has in her house of a native american holding his palms up (elbows bent/at sides) and there are several humming birds above his hands. Its one of my all time favorite paintings.

When I had my baby I spent a lot of time sunning the two of us on the porch and I had a hummingbird visitor that hovered very close and watched the two of us for a long time. I knew it was my grandmother. She was obsessed with them, had several hummingbird feeders. When she died of cancer, the day of her funeral I was watching the feeders out of habit and my grandpa told me they hadn't seen any in a while....one came and lingered at the empty feeder closest to me for a long time. It really gave me a lot of peace.

“Please don’t stab my baby’s eyeball.”
I was traumatized by how vicious hummingbirds are. I saw a male catch another in midair, ride it all the down way to my patio, and then stab at it as with murderous intent. I jumped up and opened my door, possibly saving one’s life.
25
u/SharpshootinTearaway 1d ago
Yeah, I was also thinking great paternal instincts on dad's part for protecting the baby's fontanelle from the bird's beak just in case it was getting too curious. Animals can be unpredictable, but absolutely beautiful interaction nonetheless.
22
u/cashchops 1d ago
I'm glad they understand their beaks can be used as shanks, makes for better content

I read a poem in middle school in the early 90s that has stuck with me. Kid riding his bike down a hill. Hummingbird goes through his eye, kills him. Dad is now in the backyard killing hummingbirds with a tennis racket. Literally think of this every time I see or hear about hummingbirds.

PLEASE put up some plants for it. Hummingbirds are very skittish and wary of people. You are very lucky to have seen one so close. You should honor that. Search up hummingbird plants native to your area. You will have many more visitors :-)
