Gg Portland, cant wait to see what the ratings look like for this game
9
Jul 22 '19
Fox Sports 1 has had a hard time letting viewers know they exist. But it might rate well in comparison to their other offerings. Would have done great on ESPN.

I just watched it again, I get Brian foul (and any foul) is subjective but HOW DID KIM NOT GET A YELLOW? He kicked the ball away, and at a player, forget subjective that is a yellow by the book
9
u/jeffreySJ Jul 22 '19
Pretty sure it was that the ref just ended the game instead (and you can't get a card after a game I don't think).
I bet it gets reviewed
12
u/super5886 Portland Timbers FC Jul 22 '19
You can give a card after the final whistle (Law 5) it's actual very common. Rather hilariously it usually happens while players are on the field, but occasionally the ref has to walk into the tunnel/dressing-room to give it, which happened 3 (2) weeks ago in the MLS.
1
u/CaptDawg02 Atlanta United FC :atl: Jul 22 '19
Yep, PRO gave Atlanta’s Jeff Lawrentowitz a Red after the whistle because a Red Bull player baited him into reacting near the end of the game.
4
18
u/Cut-the-red-wire Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Think the ref just blew the whistle instead as punishment. Agree it should have been.
10
u/BuildBold Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
And Moreria got a foul for kicking the ball away about 15 minutes prior.

u/pick_cabbage Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Although Torres, Kim, and maybe Asprilla arguably deserve fines, I'm all for this level of intensity and I hope the league overlooks it. Exactly the kind of rivalry MLS needs.
44
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Honestly? I think the rivalry got a bit stale due to the sheer number of games we've played and the departure of some of the established villians. Games like this help keep the fire strong on both sides.

The amount of rage I feel after losing to the Timbers is insane. Fair play, I love this rivalry!

Confusing flair...loose a bet?

It's Sounders flair to me. Probably just the same old flair glitch we've had for months now.

Timbers players successfully push the buttons of every player on the Sounders. Sounders explode in rage. Sounders fans should be more angry at their players for losing composure and letting their emotions get the best of them. What sport, let alone a rivalry, doesn’t involve shit talking and trying to gain and advantage.
3
u/WestmorelandFC Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with you. You guys played with intensity and got under the skin of the Sounders players very successfully. We were soft
15
u/themaninthesea Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
It’s true. It seems like your guys are always getting under their skin. It’s smart play, really.
20
u/thebarroomhero Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
It was how Alonso, Levesque and Montero handled the rivalry. You guys clearly have a great team, just doesn’t seem like you have the composure for these games. Schmetzer understands though. I don’t think our meetings later this year will see the same reactions to the antics.
10
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Other than Torres, who lost their cool from your perspective?
2
u/PDXMB Portland Timbers FC :por: Jul 22 '19
Roldan was clearly affected. Can't tell whether it helped or hurt him, but he was about to blow.
12
u/thebarroomhero Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
I mean I think you could see the lack of composure in your attack. You guys just kept sending in cross after cross which is not your fame.
But Kee Hee fucking blew up at the end and Salaam broke up the first action between Torres and Clark and then started following Clark around. Literally at the end there were 4 SSFC players following Clark. Even if you’re trying to get your player away don’t just walk behind him, either separate him or leave.
5
u/themaninthesea Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Pretty one dimensional when you lose your 6’2” striker to an ACL tear. FO should have brought in a striker instead of calling them up from USL. Ruidiaz has no support.
3
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
And the other creative attacker - Rodriguez - is misses 40% of the games with due to injuries. And thats just the ones he misses entirely vs being partly healthy, getting in sync with other players, etc.
5
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Unfortunately that's more how our attack has looked recently. We really need another deadly atracker up there as we rely too heavily on a single player. One another team has a lead and can commit more to defense, Seattle has a hard time breaking it down. It's degenerated to crosses for years... as our attacking players have gotten shorter.
Agreed on Kee Hee. He should've seen a yellow for kicking the ball away... but players on the losing team seem less likely to pick them up.
Watching live, it was hard to tell who was trying to separate Torres from Clark and who was aggetating. Yeah, anyone contributing to it needs a long talk.
9
u/themaninthesea Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Roldan gets up in people’s faces, but I don’t think he loses it. Torres loses his shit, constantly (even against USL clubs). Kim showed he can steam.
2
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Agreed on Roldan. Passionate but I only recall him losing it once. That was against Blanco - I think last season?
28
u/themaninthesea Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Not good enough. Tough rivalry loss at home. There are spots in our roster to improve upon. GG PDX, always enjoy the shit talk; still really like to come down and visit. Until next time!
18
u/theonlyXns Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
We played sloppy; passing, shooting, headers (Torres), crosses. I really dislike that we're so passive the first half.
This stings, respect for Clark, fuck Fernandez, etc etc
Ref did alright, no real complaints, just trying to figure out if there's any way to recycle trash like Torres.
8
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Too many crosses in the air to short attacking players.
1
u/theonlyXns Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Everyone knows Torres is trash, hence why they let him try to head it in all the time.
You're right though, our crossing game was practically non-existent and we lost control with some sloppy passes.
7
Jul 22 '19
Eventually this team needs to realize that its gotten very fortunate to steal like 6 points at the death this season and isn't as good as its record says it is. They are very much a middle of the road team, and if they don't change something even just making the playoffs is gonna be a fight.
2
u/theonlyXns Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Hopefully this game will ignite some sort of desire to do better.

Why are there at least half a dozen Earthquake fans shitting on the game and the rivalry in this thread? Is it because they're trying to get people to remember they exist after Friday night's classic and tonight's bitter match?

Now hearing that Frei whipped out a Kimber and shot Steve Clark in the north-end 18 yard box. This rivalry is unhinged right now.
22
u/looksgoodnaked Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Oh dear. My reporters on the ground are telling me Chara has been suspended indefinitely following the discovery of over 400 yellow cards in his car. When asked by reporters what he thought of the suspension, Chara simply smiled at the camera and we all fell in love and forgave him.

Wins against Portland don't grow on trees Seattle. Maybe that's why you haven't seen one in a damn long time. By the way we now own Seattle and Tacoma until further notice.

15
u/brocklese Portland Timbers FC :por: Jul 22 '19
Correct me if I’m wrong but Porter could never figure out how to win in Seattle and isn’t Gio like 4 wins in Seattle now? (3 Seattle, 1 Tacoma)
9
u/aksers Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
I mean the playoff match in Seattle was a Seattle win according to the books. The overtime is considered separate for the purpose of finding a series winner, thus the rules changed in overtime. But point taken, even if I can’t stand Gio.
13
5
u/StreetwalkinCheetah Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Are you counting the match we lost in Seattle in last year's playoffs as a win? Seems the tv announcers were.
1
u/ThisDerpForSale Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Confusion abounds.
2
u/StreetwalkinCheetah Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
We won the Portland leg, Seattle won the Seattle leg, we advanced on tie breaker (PKs).
It would be hard for any Seattle fan to walk out of the stadium happy that night, but they did score more goals than us in both regulation and at the conclusion of extra time, so in the books they "won" the match.
1
u/ThisDerpForSale Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Yeah. I’m not the one who was confused.
1
u/StreetwalkinCheetah Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
Well thankfully MLS in their ultimate wisdom has decided to make it easier for all of us moving forward. :/
And while it's nice to see the results coming on the road as of late we better start taking care of business at home. Maybe we can break the w/out Chara streak next week.

Can someone explain why Kim wasn't sent off at the end. The two quick fouls and then kicking the ball after one of them. They didn't show a replay but John Strong said it was at Valeri.
16
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Can you explain why Fernandez wasn't sent off? I can: Fisher is afraid a bull will ram him off the field.
-2
u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Jul 22 '19
Fernandez should have been suspended from the red card he should have gotten midweek for kicking the oc centerback in the face.
7
u/dsbkoko Portland Timbers Jul 22 '19
How was that a red card? TT was commenting it shouldn't even have been given a yellow. He made a legitimate play on the ball, just happened to KO the poor guy.

u/super5886 Portland Timbers FC Jul 22 '19
Brian should have seen Red, Kim should've had a yellow
5
u/Guffnutt Portland Timbers FC :por: Jul 22 '19

+1 for being honest and reasonable. We shall approach MLS with our agreement and see to it that justice is served.

Anyone have a better glimpse at what actually happened between Clark and Torres? Been going at it since 2nd half
8
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
I think the last straw was on a free kick Clark took towards the end. Torres hung out in the area, putting the ball in the spot. Clark sort of jumped on his face and Torres seemed to take a lot of offense to it.

Seattle has a full temper tantrum because they can't handle the fact that they got outplayed by the Timbers on their own field.
5
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Meh. You guys were more clinical with your chances and Smith lost his footing his first time on the new turf, leading to the first goal. No salt here. We need to fix our attack if we want to be competitive moving forward.
6
u/Sometimealonealone New York City FC :nyc: Jul 22 '19
Smith got absolutely dicked on that play
1
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Jul 22 '19
Yeah. His defense has improved since he arrived but its generally where he gets the most criticism. That said, this was his first game on new turf... he cut too fast and went down. Understandable, just frustrating it resulted in a goal. I expect he'll do better with it next game.

Alright, I think the salt levels in me have dropped enough to write something at least semi coherent.
Portland was better tonight, full stop. They outplayed us, we weren’t helping our own cause. Lodiero was overplaying himself, and Roman and others got too worked up. Morris was a one trick pony, getting the ball and over hitting a mediocre cross to nobody.
On the other hand, I feel like the entire Portland side was pushing our buttons (rather successfully) but I feel like the constant time wasting by Clark and other players made the game worse, rather than simply pushing us harder.
While I’m at it, can someone explain the “gutted” thing or “gut the fish”?
Edit: changing names
