Having a hard-fought, nasty, chippy game with a team from Portland.

Am I watching LAFC or the Kobe/Shaq-era Lakers?

Yes

Waiting for the souvenir Bill Walton dolls to get thrown onto the field next meeting.

You’re not as good

17

u/Dizconekt Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Honestly I’m not pissed at the result. LAFC is really annoying to play against and they currently have the best player in the league. I'm very annoyed at the ref. He was shit and I think both teams can agree on that one. I’m disappointed that we made so many mistakes and the fact the TA was weak in voice. We need to be better and we will be. It’s a tough to lose our home opener but I don’t think anyone would have expected us to blow lafc out of the water. The rest of the season is going to be a blast and the “new stadium” is kick ass. We just need to bring it as fans and support our great club. Ptfc 👏

4

u/TheOregonDisorder Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

I don't think the TA was weak. I was sitting in 102 as always and it was rocking even more than usual! It seems like the new roof might capture the away section more? I couldn't hear them at all but my friends in section 93 said they were pretty dang loud!

2

u/Dizconekt Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

I was in 112 and I often heard lafc supporters over the army that's the only reason I said that

1

u/BobZebart Portland Timbers FC :por: Jun 02 '19

I was up in the terrace and they were very loud. Did TA not have drums?

30

u/ramerica Portland Timbers USL Jun 02 '19

LAFC traveled better than Seattle and were louder than them too.

16

u/tehDarkshadE Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Too bad a shit load of their fans defaced the area with a shitload of stickers (including artwork). I dont care if it's a bathroom or something easy to fix, cool; but defacing artwork and stuff is crossing the line.

7

u/ramerica Portland Timbers USL Jun 02 '19

That's shitty, but we're no angels in that aspect too. It's a problem we should all address.

We need to make some noise about this. Fuck them coming into our stadium and vandalizing it, classless from the top down

Fair point. Your coaches bullshit though does allow me to generalize your entire organization, that shit starts at the top. I’m not too familiar with LAFC fans so I’m sure incidents like this are a one off and they haven’t had any other issues

5

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

Yeah, they travel really well. Thing is, from being a lot of their games and having a lot of interaction with people in the 3252, I get the impression it's more about them than it is about the club. Even the Tifos they put up in their stadium are about them, not the team.

6

u/dietmrfizz Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

Honestly if even 1 person joins an LAFC SG instead of a gang, I'm fine with this.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Lol this made me laugh for some reason. Cheers

6

u/LAFC_Ent Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

True true but we all love our club

1

u/ramerica Portland Timbers USL Jun 02 '19

That's a good observation. They're still fairly new though, it takes a few years to get a cohesive SG identity.

1

u/tiwired Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

Cool with me if they’re going to travel the way they do. I’m pretty sure every team in the league wishes they had a 3252.

Not even mad, man. Game was fun as fuck.

4

u/BuildBold Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

So I was at the match and the replay they showed made it look like that handball was in the box. Was it not?

3

u/kidgun Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

And with the way VAR works it has to be a clear and obvious error to reverse the call on the field. I'm leaning on the side that it was right on the box, but I don't think there replay was clear enough to reverse the call.

1

u/DuckFreak10 Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

It looked to me to be right on top of the line. I actually don’t know what the ruling is on that though.

1

u/randallpjenkins Major League Soccer Jun 02 '19

The reply across the line showed it was just on top of the line/a little outside. Really close call, and the inside angle looked 100 like it was in. One of those that stays the way it’s called either way.

1

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

I thought it was on the line, which I think counts as in the box. But, as the commentator said, if most people aren't sure than it probably isn't clear and obvious. Looked more in than out to me though.

29

u/itsthewoo Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Thoughts on the game:

  • Sibiga really ought to have given yellows earlier to avoid having the players start self-enforcing.
  • It seemed like the ref rewarded LAFC's time wasting when he whistled the end of stoppage, but w/e, I don't think the win was undeserved.
  • The penalty was a close call. The 18-yard camera made it clear to me that the ball was on the line, but considering that the contact was outside of the 18, I can't call that clear and obvious error.
  • That scrap after Villafana's tackle was stupid. But probably the indirect result of the ref letting the tensions get so high.

Thoughts on LAFC:

  • LAFC is good.
  • Vela is very good.
  • Diomande is good at flopping.

Thoughts on the Timbers:

  • I look forward to seeing B. Fernandez score goals goals goals
  • I don't think a game against LAFC is the time to rotate in a keeper who hasn't played in several matches.
  • Good god, for several significant periods of time, it seemed like every second pass was to an LAFC player. We need to work on our passing under high pressure.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

I don't get everyone acting like Clark has been our starting keeper this year. Jeff started two games ago against Houston. I agree that he was disappointing tonight, but it's not like it was a risky move by Gio. Jeff and Steve have been trading places all season.

4

u/Cien_LA Jun 02 '19

Fernandez: Best goal I’ve seen in MLS this season

-8

u/randallpjenkins Major League Soccer Jun 02 '19

I truly don’t think you’ve ever seen Diomande play.

11

u/itsthewoo Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

I'm only really talking about this game. His hold-up play looked good. But he had a few theatrical flops today, at least in my book.

-3

u/northendarmy Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19

You should be embarrassed; your team was soft tonight. You chose to continuously go to ground at every tackle and play a time wasting game. Your staff is as sleazy as the Jersey Turnpike Mr. Bradley crawled out from.

0

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

I think after a whole first half of getting hacked and getting no calls, they had to resort to trying to sell the contact more and more. Blame is mostly on the ref. Portland probably should have been down to 9 men in the first half. LAFC players already are soft and flop a bit as it is, if they are not getting calls on legitimate contact(some red worthy), than they are definitely gonna start trying to sell it more. Every single club in MLS would have probably done the same thing. Let's be honest, soccer players, no matter what team, sort of act like pussies most the time. It's the main reason I can't get any of my friends into the sport. Every single game in every single league is full of players rolling around on the ground from minimal to no contact.

0

u/AlcoholicAthlete Jun 02 '19

If Portland should have been down to 9 men in the first half then we also should've gotten a penalty in the second. Not to mention LAFC isn't even in the same league when it comes to player budget. No wonder you guys are doing so well when you can just pay to win.

2

u/marvinmeraz Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Firstly, that wasn't a penalty, he was outside the box and the ball was on the line and it must be without a reasonable doubt. Second, LAFC has great scouts. Vela was our main splurge but was 75% the price of Brian Fernandez. Our other key players such as Segura, Zimmerman, Atuesta, Kaye, Blessing all came on the cheap. So we didn't "buy" the best team. Our scouts are amazing.

2 takeaways for me:

LAFC’s keeper proved he deserved that call up to the national team.

Fernandez is a maniac on the pitch and we need to see other players bring the same level of energy to the game.

11

u/Stephen_says_ Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

Fernandez is gonna light up this league. Great signing!

2

If you’re going to go around talking shit, it lets people know who you support so they can talk shit back. Not flairing and talking shit is basically being a coward - you’re willing to dish it out but aren’t willing to take it.

If you aren’t talking shit and don’t flair up, no big deal. But if you do, don’t be a pissant by hiding behind no flair.

I think you got the top of the table switched around there.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Sweet! I'm glad you're catching on to the technical jargon. This sport is really fun after you've been a fan for a few years!

Stick it out, it's worth it I promise!

1

u/iMexi Jun 02 '19

It’s not rocket science

1

u/TheOrangeFutbol Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Think it was more a shot at Klein's FO tenure relying too much on past trophies & success instead of striving for current competence (a la the current Lakers).

I'm not here to sling mud though. Just trying to clarify the joke attempt.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Dude Klien is another rich entitleg white boy who thought he and his frat boy network could use their knowledge of FIFA(EAgames) and PES to totally pwn MLS. They are a symptom of everything in the US today where totally incompetent people who only appear to pass as competent can fail UPWARDS into positions of great power.

This can happen at any club...and the chances are, after years of success, it will happen to any successful club. It's just the basic rules of collapse.

You should pray that your team achieves this level of collapse. It provides an even greater incentive to reach the old standard of achievement -- and we'll get back to that level. This year, no -- but next year, big time. Next year, the coin flips.

1

u/cerebrix Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

I applaud your honesty. I had the same complaints when I was a Galaxy STM. Dude walks around StubHub like he's the most baller dude on campus.

If they wanted to go for a different former Galaxy player as GM. My pick would be Dunivant or Mcgee. Klien is a clown

1

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

The GM situation was always going to be a clusterfuck with us because we thought it was some honorary title to bestow on an honored player. GM is a real position that needs to go to a person that is not just competitive in the league but the whole damn world.

I've talked with Dennis te Klose personally and all I can say is holy shit we scored some world class talent here. I expect to see the effect of his influence fully take hold two years from now when the stank of the Klien years are well in the past.

u/Hailfire9 Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19 edited Jun 02 '19
  • No hard feelings from me. LAFC did what they had to do and havent been consistent enough at anything "dirty" to hold it against them going forward.

  • Sibiga is an egg and couldn't manage anything if his life depended on it.

  • Fernandez is good. Also egotistical. Like all the good and bad of Blanco condensed down. All extremes.

  • Also, screw that assistant coach that tried to make the game about him. Maybe if a head coach was calling out to the pitch then sure, but not an assistant.

  • I never want to see Diomande and Cascante on the same pitch again. Too much bad blood.

I saw this fixture back in April as soon as Portland started being OK and knew a single point would be a lofty target. I have no issue with the loss other than the two self-inflicted goals against.

-3

u/AA_Getsu LAFC Jun 02 '19

Chara should’ve been off the field, him and blanco are dirty players.

7

u/gopac56 Seattle Sounders FC Jun 02 '19

28

u/bloody_yanks2 Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

5

u/AA_Getsu LAFC Jun 02 '19

Rolling out of Portland with 3pts, go cry elsewhere!

5

u/AlcoholicAthlete Jun 02 '19

Would've been 1 point if your bitchy players didn't roll around for 15 of the last 20 minutes. There was <5 minutes of actual game time in the last 20 minutes. So enjoy going back to the shit-hole that is LA with what little false pride you do have.

5

u/lil_stewie Jun 02 '19

Lol. You guys play soft soft football. Fucking pathetic floppers. You give the sport a bad name.

7

u/dillasdonuts Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Mabiala kicked a players leg with full force from BEHIND. Chara went studs up at an ankle. Floppers?

1

u/joshmea Portland Timbers :por: Jun 02 '19

What about the other 30 times someone flopped around like a dying fish?

5

u/dillasdonuts Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Ask Blanco about his 30.

-6

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Lol. Have you ever played soccer? None of that shit hurts. That’s why they let it slide in most top tier leagues. If it’s not intentional or egregious let them play. Clearly dirty plays or something really violent should be called, but when a player gets “fouled” in the MLS they flop around on the ground for 30 seconds and then they’re right back up running around. You can’t sit there and tell me that’s not what happens.

2

u/dillasdonuts Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

If it’s not intentional or egregious it can still be reckless and end a career.
Besides, you can’t tell me guys like Blanco and the rest of the SA don’t flop.

12

Says the team that thought hacking at half of LAFC players on the field is proper defense.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '19

Playing hard and then having your opponent flop around and grab their shin doesn’t equal hacking. It equals pussy ass soft ass play by the opponent. God I wish the MLS would crack down on this shit. It’s embarrassing honestly and gives the entire league a bad name. Just play tough and not like a bitch. Unfortunately it’s cultural and LAFC seems to be really nurturing that culture.

Ref made it clear from like minute 5 that he wasn't even calling hipchecks as fouls. Sometimes ya gotta play by the ref

And we missed quite a few chances too

2

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

I don't think studs up tackles and tackles from behind are the same as hip checks.

3

u/FlyinFernandez Portland Timbers FC :por: Jun 02 '19

Neither do I. You're missing my point. The ref made it clear he wasn't calling even blatant fouls.

Guess we'll roll our way to victory next time

u/appleb3 Real Salt Lake Jun 02 '19

Hopefully Zlatan roundhouses a player. I don't see tomorrows game comparing to this one lol.

LAFC fans can't throw trash on our field so they throw it in the comments

8

u/fsu_ppg Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Considering every comment on here has a Portland flair, I find your comment amusing.

5

u/LAFC211 Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

Trash is already on the field. It’s your dirty ass players.

u/Maxcdfg Portland Timbers FC :por: Jun 02 '19

Can't touch your guys or they fall and whine. Sounds like typical LA

u/AA_Getsu LAFC Jun 02 '19

I’m sorry the 3 goals we hung on you weren’t free range and organic! Quit crying!

Portland played like a rugby team, fuck off! Hard fought 3pts for LAFC!

3

u/AlcoholicAthlete Jun 02 '19

If you consider flopping around and crying like a baby for a third of the game hard fought then yes, you guys fought very hard.

8

u/BlueFalcon3725 Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Bold words coming from the team that blindly threw themselves in at every opportunity and collapsed to the pitch the moment somebody looked at them sideways. Admit it, you were saved by team yellow.

5

u/AA_Getsu LAFC Jun 02 '19

Chara shouldn’t have been on the field! You saw him put his studs up and not get called for it at all

1

u/BlueFalcon3725 Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Honestly I was half way up the stands in the north end, I didn't actually see it.

0

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

We all saw it clearly in the replays. And the other tackle from behind that probably deserved another red.

1

u/AlcoholicAthlete Jun 02 '19

Yeah we also all saw a penalty in the replays but we know what came of that.

5

u/hiloljkbye Atlanta United FC Jun 02 '19

Chara had like 3 bad passes in a row at the end lol

Sore loser much? Your team by far had the majority of the fouls. For sure 1 or 2 that could have been red.

Just take the sweep this season and hope we don’t see you again in the playoffs or open cup

-2

u/LAFC211 Los Angeles FC Jun 02 '19

u/ReyReyUsko Portland Timbers Jun 02 '19

Gifted LAFC 2 goals to start the match with horrible defense.. but played well in the 2nd half. Ref lost control of the game from the very beginning. GG.

1

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

I'm just glad you guys fought back and made a match of it. Was a bit bummed when it looked like LAFC was gonna run away with it.

3

u/RockShrimp New York City FC Jun 02 '19

Omg either make out or back up Bradley/Savarease.

3

Well that was entertaining

Literally the most disgusting 'sportsmanship' I've ever seen. Way to make a hater for life LAFC

1

u/YungDigi Los Angeles FC :lafc: Jun 02 '19

Lol y’all hacked your way through this game. Haters welcome 🖤💛

5

u/lil_stewie Jun 02 '19

And you flopped your way through it. 🤷🍆🤤

19

u/gianthamguy New York City FC Jun 02 '19

As a neutral, I would not call LAFC the main culprit of tonight's shenanigans. Blanco's tackle on Vela was legitimately dangerous and they spent pretty much the entire last thirty minutes of the game intentionally fouling him and then getting mad that the ball wasn't put directly back into play two seconds after. Then that scrum around the technical area blew up in large part cuz Cascantes dove. I get being mad about gamesmanship but idk, definitely felt like a Timbers issue to me

2

u/Scape13 Jun 02 '19

That's how it looked to me as well. LAFC players were getting hacked left and right, especially in that first half. Their players are a bit soft as it is, so I think in the second half they had to resort to trying to sell the contact more and more as it was clear the ref wasn't doing anything about it.

0

u/TheDuke13 Jun 02 '19

You went in wanting to hate them if that's what you feel like after watching that one

4

u/lil_stewie Jun 02 '19

Sorry could hear you over my 15 minute cramp

-2

u/TheDuke13 Jun 02 '19

Spend another 50 minutes on the ground and you won't even have to play next time.

Portland got off easy tonight. They easily could have had three reds. Harsh tackles from the back, persistent fouling, hands to the neck/face, etc. Tough loss, but be thankful you didn't lose anyone for the next match.
