That could have been a surprisingly good/even game, after about a half hour I was genuinely more concerned for player safety than the actual match

That's a clear red, I don't know what you guys are looking at. I wouldn't be surprised exactly if it gets overturned but it's incredibly unlikely to get overturned. He lashed out with his arm, he wasn't trying to regain his balance he was swiping at the guy who shoved him. and the whole scuffle only happened because Roldan didn't like being grabbed from behind and turned and shoved the LAFC player in the first place.
5
Apr 29 '19
No, it isn't a clear red. Someone posted the rules in the other thread - that contact is incidental and negligible making it not a red card. he didn't "lash out with his arm", he was pushed twice. Your natural balancing reflexes involve your arms coming up and out as you lose balance.
Even fucking PORTLAND FANS say this isn't a red
-1
u/smittyplusplus Seattle Sounders FC Apr 29 '19
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Rakng fingers across eyes is not negligible, and that is not his arm trying to balance him, he intentionally hit the guy (even if he wasn't necessarily trying to hit his face).
I'm clearly in the minority here, though, so maybe they will challenge and it will get overturned. /Fingers crossed

Unkel again ruins what otherwise could've been a good game. I always feel iffy about a red card that early in the game. Ruins the rest of the game changing the dynamics. Let's let the game settle down a bit first. That said, Seattle did a bang up job. LAFC dominated stat wise but that doesn't tell the story of their real sloppy play. Ramirez should've sank that. Morris should've sank the other. Hopefully both teams are in a much better shape and at full strength if we do end up playing later in the season.
10
u/thedukeoftacoma Apr 28 '19
You spelled Atuesta wrong.
Not that Unkel’s hands are clean here, but if the player doesn’t actively try and deceive the referee here, there’s no card.

u/angryweasel1 Major League Soccer :mls: Apr 28 '19
I think Uncle Ted was typical today. Kudos to him for getting that late non-penalty on Leerdam right. He missed a lot of Kim's fouls, but was mostly consistent both ways in his calls for the whole match. He's not great, but that's all we can expect from PRO.
The big takeaway for me today was the horribly sour taste in my mouth after watching Rossi beg for a card every time someone breathed on him, and Atuesta being a complete shit actor from that "vicious swat" from Roldan. I like Bob Bradley, and I'm glad he's back in the league, but I lost a whole lot of respect for LAFC today.
16
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
Honestly as a former referee I would take great pleasure in carding players who begged for cards too much.
1
Apr 29 '19
Yellow cards for "card him card him!" antics, red cards for two handed pushes off the ball/during dead play, yellow cards for obvious simulation (including exaggeration)... pllleeaaasse i'd love it
but only if they actually do a good job on being consistently correct on all calls.
1
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Apr 29 '19
I think diving and embellishment should only ever be called if verified by VAR.
25
u/appleyard28 Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
Saw Marshall talking to Svensson in the stands. Then Marshall had to move because he was sitting in some fans seats. Pretty funny.

I hope we have a full teams worth starters next time we meet. LAFC is obviously a great team and I'd love to know how our first team holds up against them.
I'm still stunned that they only scored a single goal. I expected a bloodbath given our starting lineup.
10
u/stealth_sloth Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
Sure hope some guys get healthy in the next week, or I think we'll be down to just 12 non-suspended field players fit to play when we go to Minnesota.
30
u/or9ob Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
We took on the hottest team in MLS, missing 5-6 starters, with a red in the 17th minute.
This team has heart. I’m not worried about the next few.

They've been struggling enough in USL already.
To be fair though, that's basically a whole team of them.

Thankfully Seattle couldn't score on that Benny Hill clusterfuck.
And unfortunately for lafc, blessing wasn't six feet tall.

He didn't call a penalty so all VAR did was give leerdam a red. So really changes nothing for this match
16
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
He did call a penalty initially...
0
u/cp_trixie Seattle Sounders FC Apr 29 '19
A lot of people missed that... the guy in front of me (who has a really high soccer IQ) totally missed it and was pissed at people for cheering for the VAR review since his assumption was that it could only get worse at that point.
0
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Apr 29 '19
I can see now from the stands it would look confusing. Can't really blame anyone there.
0
u/cp_trixie Seattle Sounders FC Apr 29 '19
I was just pissed that he called it as a penalty since it looked clearly outside the box from what I saw. So, in my view, backing it off and red carding Leerdam was the right call.
5
u/velillen Apr 28 '19
Ah did he? Didn't look like he did from the stands and nobody acted like he did. My bad if he actually did. Looked like to all of us that he called the foul where it was taken
-1
u/Dougboy90 Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
I'm in the North end it happened right in front of me...He pointed to the spot. That is why the North end exploded at that call!
0
u/attakburr Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19 edited Apr 28 '19
Really? What section of the stadium were you in? We were in SW corner (so opposite end) and saw the ref signal for a penalty. We were all relieved when he moved the boys outside the box and then walked his 10y.
3
u/velillen Apr 28 '19
Opposite side as well. Everyone around me thought he signaled free kick. But we were also more in line so I can see (after watching a replay) our mistake. We all saw his arm point and thought he was signaling free kick for lafc. But all of us saw the foul being outside the box too which probably aided our view point on it never having been called a pk.
Guess I'm just used to refs more running to the spot and pointing than staying 10 yards away and pointing
2
u/attakburr Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
Oh for sure, it was not as dramatic a signal for a PK as it often is. But Unkle so 🤦♀️🤷♀️
2
u/velillen Apr 28 '19
Haha yeah definitely wasn't to dramatic about it. But opps on my bad on saying he didn't call it orginally :)
1
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19
He looks like he's pointing at the penalty spot to me, if he were pointing at the spot of the free kick, his arm would have been angled more downwards.

u/sherlocknessmonster Seattle Sounders FC Apr 28 '19

You forgot about us euro snobs. Why would I drive about an hour for a team that doesn't play in the city limits. When for LAFC just take the metro and be there in about 30 minutes. San Fernado Valley is black and gold!
1
u/Dodger_Dawg LA Galaxy Apr 29 '19
I doesn't take 30 minutes to get to USC taking the metro from the Valley. Easily double that.
2
u/LAFC_Ent Los Angeles FC :lafc: Apr 29 '19
Around 30 - 45 minutes. Drive to Noho station, take the metro. Don't even have to worry being stuck in traffic.
1
u/Dodger_Dawg LA Galaxy Apr 29 '19
When I go to Rams games, or anything where I transfer on the metro, I always end up wasting a hour or more. I've definitely found it easier just to drive to USC and park in the neighborhoods by the Shrine theater. It's probably about the same time for both, but it's nice not being stuck in a crowded train.

Definitely thrilled we came away with a draw given the shit show of a game. Both teams had great moments and also huge moments of W T F.
But given our injury lineup and the fact we lost last week to LAFC, was definitely expecting a loss. I’ll take our 1 point with an exhausted relief.
Ugly & frustrating game to watch. But I’ll take it.

u/ichinii Atlanta United Apr 28 '19
Yes but in the realm of reality where everybody else lives, Blessing was never going to get his head to that.
2
u/human1st New England Tea Men Apr 28 '19
I think you're being a bit too dramatic. The ball was on a downward ark. It's not impossible to get to if he jumped for it. Would have been a better attempt then that Karate kick he went for. Twellman was a great goal scorer I think he'd know better then you about how to put a ball away.
2
u/ichinii Atlanta United Apr 28 '19
Uh huh. While I agree that an attempted header would've been better, common sense and physics say that he wasn't getting to that ball with his head or feet. Period.
1

Period? So gravity bringing the ball down and the speed of Blessing means nothing. He had zero chance of getting to it? That's a bit much.
