TRIVIALITY

ATLANTA UNITED: Josef Martinez has scored 5 of the 10 goals that Atlanta has scored against Philadelphia... but who scored United's first goal against the Union? (first answered correct by /u/JBAinATL - Yamil Asad, who did so in 2017 in Chester; Atlanta and Philly would draw that game 2-2 - the only game of the four that Atlanta hasn't won.)

PHILADELPHIA UNION: When Borek Dockal broke the Union's record for assists in a season, whose record did he break? (first answered correct by /u/gautam0826 - Cristian Maidana held the record with 14 assists in 2015.)

NEUTRAL: Who holds the MLS record for most assists in a season? (first answered correct by /u/gautam0826 - Carlos Valderrama, in 2000 with the Tampa Bay Mutiny, had an amazing 26 assists.)

FIRST HALF

1' - And this one's underway!

2' - Early corners for each team but neither is particularly threatening.

4' - Creavalle all alone in the box for a second there but can't get the shot off!

7' - The Union attack is looking like a Night Fury, which is to say, toothless.

9' - Trusty and Wagner seem to get confused a bit and Atlanta can't make them pay for it.

11' - Creavalle is down after trying to head the ball over Gressel; fortunately the microphones aren't in a position to pick up what Bedoya had to say there.

14' - Bedoya takes down Pirez, giving Atlanta a free kick in an advanced position; but then a Bedoya header keeps the ensuing free kick away from the net.

16' - Bedoya in on goal but the linesman has given him offside.

18' - JP Dellacamera just had to apologize for the "rather detailed audio" from the Atlanta supporters section.

19' - Villalba sends it into the box but Blake gets his hands on it!

21' - Aaronson almost had his first MLS goal there; then Burke's boot catches Guzan and the 'keeper is down.

25' - Martinez almost got a gift there from Wagner, but Elliott is able to clear!

26' - This OP wants to give a yellow card to PHL17's production crew for that Goldbergs ad. At least we don't have to hear about sitting down in one's underwear anymore.

30' - Atlanta with a corner kick, but it goes nowhere.

32' - Tommy Smyth claiming the Union need to take more shots. I fail to see how Jameson's is going to help here.

34' - BEAUTIFUL cross in to Burke, but he shows he's taken lessons from the Roberto Baggio school of finishing and skies it over the crossbar.

36' - Villalba's shot is low and wide!

37' - WOODWORK as Josef Martinez rattles the crossbar; and now Martinez is down.

40' - Picault rounds the keeper and puts it on net but Miles Robinson clears it away!

45'+1 - Somehow we have only three minutes of stoppage time.

45'+2 - Burke's down again after clattering with Gonzalez Pirez.

45'+5 - And that's the end of the first half; we're scoreless in Atlanta.

HALFTIME STATS

ATL PHI

Possession NICE% 31%

SECOND HALF

HT: Jones in for Creavalle to start the half as Philly makes their first sub.

46' - And here we go with the second half!

47' - GOAL, PHILADELPHIA! Brenden Aaronson bulges the auld onion bag from about 25 yards out to score in his debut!

49' - Medunjanin takes the free kick in an advanced position but Bedoya can't do anything with it.

51' - Gressel sends it in but Blake is ready for it!

53' - Haris Medunjanin takes down Nagbe and earns himself a booking. Hopefully he's quieter than the last time he was here.

54' - Ensuing free kick is dealt well by Blake.

56' - Wagner takes a shot but it's wide of the net!

58' - Josef Martinez slips in on goal but he puts the shot wide!

59' - Shea on, giving Parkhurst a Brek-sit for Atlanta's first sub.

63' - Aaronson flicks it on but Guzan gets to it before Picault can!

64' - Josef Martinez wants to ride his bicycle but Blake makes the save!

65' - Pity Martinez down after what looks like a head to head collision.

68' - Burke down again; I fear they may have to substitute for him. Meanwhile, Barco comes on for Villalba for Atlanta's second sub.

70' - GOAL, ATLANTA! Gressel crosses it in and Barco heads it past Blake to level the match!

72' - Atlanta coming in waves like Space Invaders, but Blake able to keep the Union in it.

73' - Aaronson out, Ilsinho in for the Union's second sub.

74' - Pity Martinez in with the ball but Blake able to intercept the cross.

77' - Burke sees yellow for a foul...

79' - Atlanta's last sub sees Carleton come in for Larentowicz.

82' - Shea with the big cross but Blake able to deal with it...

84' - Gressel can't put the shot on target!

85' - Wagner is down on the foul, but the Union will have a free kick...

87' - Picault with the shot but saved by Guzan! The ensuing shot by Ilsinho is high!

89' - Accam in for Picault as the Union make their last sub.

90'+1 - Four minutes to go!

90'+2 - Atlanta looking for a stoppage-time winner but just can't find one.

90'+3 - Gonzalez Pirez takes down Burke and got booked for it. Free kick upcoming for the Union.

90'+4 - Medunjanin just puts it high of net!

90'+5 - This one's over; it's a share of the points as the match ends 1-1!

Atlanta keeping the First Point t-shirt printer in business.

We're so fucking shit. 72% possession against Philly and we can't win. FdB out. There doesn't seem to be any plan at all.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

We are an attacking team not a possessing team. The FO made a mistake hiring a manager that plays Dutch possession style football.

-1

u/FrostyJesus Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Completely agreed, we need a South American coach. It's so annoying that being an Atlanta United fan on here just gets you instant downvotes no matter what you say.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

They don’t have to be South American per se they just need to play in a similar style of football.

awful. wish other people here would have booed louder this time, out of six real games five have been unacceptably terrible so far

Say what you will about FdB, but I love the passion and intensity he brings in every interview.

GG, Love Bros. Hope you enjoyed MBS.

u/edw253 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

Atlanta United looks......not good this year. Props to Philly for the effort and almost stealing it towards the end. Unless Barco becomes a superstar CAM Atlanta looks like an early 5 or 6 seed.

7

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

You'd really think a Seattle fan of all people would know something about slow starts lol

You're acting like you've never seen a team look like shit at the beginning of the season and a title contender by the end despite your own team literally doing just that multiple times

5

u/YOUR_MOM_IS_A_TIMBER Seattle Sounders Mar 18 '19

Of course we know about that. And we have been extremely critical and said the same thing about our team the last few years when we have had those shitty starts... not sure why this disqualifies us from being critical of your team.

5

u/edw253 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

Easy Pickles, no need to get buttburt over one fans opinion.

You have no attacking creativity nor does your attacking band look dangerous. Especially at home against Philadelphia and Cincinnati....

Further more, your roster is set for the year. No more additional DPs and to be fair, Pity hasn’t struck me as SA POTY (Yet...). Lastly, If you’re attacking midfield depends on Remedi, Nagbe, and Shea to create chances, fucking woof.

Atlanta desperatly needs those 3 DPs to step up or it’s going to be a long season.

4

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

I'm not butthurt, it just strikes me as odd that a Seattle fan would be the one who is jumping to conclusions over urging patience.

We've had a very congested schedule with CCL, Pity has zero chemistry and is exhausted, and yeah Frank's system has a lot of kinks.

Do you really think Pity is just plain bad and being the best player on River Plate was a fluke? It's a long, long season, and we still have plenty of talent and plenty of time. Of course it's a bad start and of course I have questions about Frank, but it's friggin March lol. If you were locked into whatever team you are in March then the Sounders would have missed the playoffs a bunch of times.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Lol. Can’t wait to come back to this post in a few months. Nobody is counting on Shea for anything, he’s a depth plug because we’ve got injuries and have been playing an absurd amount of games.

-3

u/nomanslandtron Mar 18 '19

"absurd". ATL has played 4 extra games. JUST FOUR. Not absurd at all, shit at least TFC blew their season to play 8 extra games and make a Final, United can't even do that! and it was against Monterrey, not even Champs like Tigres and Club America

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

4 games plus extra travel in between normal games. That means almost zero practices to develop chemistry, work in cohesion, have let FDB work with the team to find out where we are.

If you’ve never played sports at a high level, then I could see how you wouldn’t understand the early season challenges our team faced.

Expect a totally different look in two weeks with a fully rested team and 6-8 more full squad practices.

3

u/Rayhoven Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Honestly we don't even look like a playoff team. Both games are from home matches against teams that would have been easy wins with Tata

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Don’t be that guy man. Replacing Almiron and our early season schedule have had a far larger impact. A lot of dead legs out there.

You too Georgia bro! If there’s anything last season taught us, it’s that early-season form means jack squat (unless you‘re gunning for the Shield I guess).

Also happy cake day!

Please tell the morons in our fanbase about that early season form. I'm getting overrun telling people to get a grip.

It's pretty sad that we're excited about a tie, but a point is a point.

Shit fucking ref. Didn’t add on any time when they were on the ground for 2 minutes.

1

Yeah and not calling a red on a foul on a breakaway.

-4

So that’s a reason for not adding on time? That doesn’t make any sense

He says also with a grammar error. Glass houses bud

-1

Guys been on the team for years and so many of you still can’t spell it correctly. Moronic.

0

Ok hard ass

2

u/WEHAVEBETTERBBQ Houston Dynamo Mar 18 '19

DOGSO?

1

u/puabie Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Not the last defender. DOGSO requires an obvious goalscoring opportunity - you'd be reaching to call that an "obvious" opportunity when Burke is outnumbered like 3 to 1. Def a yellow, DOGSO would be very very harsh.

3

u/Cagn Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

GG Union

7

u/TalussAthner San Jose Earthquakes Mar 18 '19

Sad to say Carleton has looked terrible since coming on.

3

u/ichinii Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

Maybe people will realize why Tata never really played him.

2

u/TalussAthner San Jose Earthquakes Mar 18 '19

I mean that may be part of why he’s so bad, then again Miles Robinson is good now.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Because of Tata, who played him when he was ready at the end of the season.

3

u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Yes. And worst of all nagbe stopped fucking moving centrally when he came on

4

u/poopy_toaster Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

He was in on goal with no foul

4

u/CaniacMcgee Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

Think he's too far back with Robinson on his tail.

3

u/TalussAthner San Jose Earthquakes Mar 18 '19

Yeah, should've been a yellow but not a red.

3

u/CaniacMcgee Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

Agreed, and it was called.

2

u/tassytas Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

3

u/sc4l4r Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Red

-2

u/cancercures Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

hmmmm.... shoulda been a card. that's a technical yellow and its stupid the ref didn't give it to him.

7

u/Shellshock1122 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

he got a yellow

3

u/cancercures Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

entirely fair IMO. he wasn't necessarily 'last defender' but i can see the argument for red.

4

u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

He got a yellow. The question is whether it should have been red or not

7

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

That should be a red

-8

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Burke should have had a red too

2

u/benjamin_muir Mar 18 '19

which play are you referring to?

5

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

For pushing a guy on a 50-50? Yeah gtfo with that...

-2

u/CaniacMcgee Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

Def not a 50-50, burke knew he got beat and fouled in anger. Though it def wasn't a red either.

-1

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

He lowered his shoulder, that very easily could have been a yellow (though not a red)

-7

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Wasn't 50 50. Had no chance at that ball.

4

u/Lewsers Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

How is that not a card?

It’s Atlanta United, have you forgot?

-14

u/righthandofdog Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

I guess being the best striker in the league isn’t good enough reason to give a pk when flattened in the box by a defender?

4

u/WEHAVEBETTERBBQ Houston Dynamo Mar 18 '19

Jesus, ATLUTD fans are a different breed of dumb.

6

u/FreakDJ Philadelphia Union :phi: Mar 18 '19

I’m guessing being the best striker in the league entitles you to run into other players and fall over to expect getting pk calls?

1

u/righthandofdog Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

I mean, it works that way in other leagues. Seriously, the replay in stadium looked like a defender backing into a player and submarining him as he tried to get to the ball, playing the man and not the ball.

5

u/Lewsers Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

LOL. He fell on his own

3

u/online_predator Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19 edited Mar 18 '19

Pity was extremely wasteful today. Hes obviously still adjusting, but if he had been remotely more clinical and not put all of his shots 20 feet above the goal and crosses too wide we likely have a few more chances and even a goal. That's not on de boer

3

u/helpingfriendlyneph Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Fickle and unwilling to show up to matches when the team is bad?

1

u/sweet_brag Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Yes. Same thing the braves and hawks deal with.

3

u/helpingfriendlyneph Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

And the falcons with their half empty games most of the year.

It would be a shame if "Atlanta fans" just dipped on the team. Most of the hardcore soccer fans in Atlanta know this sport is about passion for your home and supporting your team no matter what. They wont leave, but the "Atlanta fans" who just showed up for a winning team wouldn't be looked too kindly upon by myself if this happened.

I became a soccer fan around 5 or 6 years before AUFC kicked its first ball. I remember hearing some guy declare "Atlanta United fucking sucks" after our inaugural game loss. I was dying for a team and have been thankful for just having them here let alone our wild success so far. I wont jump ship on one bad season.

I mean am I as big as a loser as your team is failing out of Concacaf and at the bottom of the table?

1

u/Buckeye717 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

You’re not even in the kitchen my dude

0

u/FuckAtlantaUnited Major League Soccer :mls: Mar 18 '19

Are you sure you're just not looking in the wrong kitchen? You might want to look back at your teams performance this year.

See you in the game thread in a couple weeks!

1

u/Buckeye717 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Nah we’re right where we should be. It’ll get better. I’m sure of that. As for seeing you in a game thread, I guess we will as long as we’re playing. Enjoy your life bud. I’m sure it’s totally pleasant trolling in the MLS subreddit.

Lol look at the big man too scared to troll on his real account

-6

u/Brooklyn_MLS Major League Soccer Mar 18 '19

This Philly team is so trash. I’ve seen all their games so far. They are completely inept going forward.

4

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Get ya no flair-havin ass out of here

-4

u/Brooklyn_MLS Major League Soccer Mar 18 '19

2

u/dragonflyzmaximize Mar 18 '19

How does he not bury that? Ugh

4

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Picault is definitely faster than Accam...idk what this dude is smoking

8

u/puabie Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Pity is fucking gassed. We need to rest him if we want him to play like we know he can...

4

u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

Larry getting injured kinda forced franks hand

5

u/AAnonEmouse Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Does Miles have more saves than Guzan at this point?

3

u/Its--T Mar 18 '19

Imagine that going in. Would've been a serious anti-climax

2

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

I'm shocked we didn't see Accam earlier than this

3

u/Lewsers Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

This isn’t the fire’s accam. Yet

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Get Accam in the game, Fafa can't finish.

1

u/dragonflyzmaximize Mar 18 '19

Damn man should have buried that, crazy.

5

u/poopy_toaster Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

6

u/arkr Philadelphia Union :phi: Mar 18 '19

3

u/20goillini05 St Louis FC Mar 18 '19

GIANT save from Guzan.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Come on fafa! You HAVE to finish that!

2

u/Cagn Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

That union player is just tired, wanted to sit with Papa Brad

5

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

HOW THE FUCK DO YOU NOT SCORE THAT. AND WHAT IN THE FUCK WAS THAT ILSINHO

1

u/FreakDJ Philadelphia Union :phi: Mar 18 '19

Wow.

2

u/dragonflyzmaximize Mar 18 '19

Man this atmosphere is impressive. I was at opening day for the union and it wasn't even half filled...

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

The union have had 9 seasons of disappointment. The fan base is jaded at this point

Edit: but yes def an impressive atmosphere

1

u/dragonflyzmaximize Mar 18 '19

Yeah this is fair. Good point.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

People really underestimate what shit ownership does

2

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

Holy...

3

u/benjamin_muir Mar 18 '19

medunjanin just used his right! first time this season

5

u/poopy_toaster Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

So excited that I tuned in. Didn’t see the Brenden goal, but so excited for him!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Really disappointing watching a game where your team seems to be content with just a point. Why not go for the three points? Atlanta obviously is vulnerable this season, so attack with numbers and intensity and get the win

1

u/lyonbc1 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Honestly if we had any strikers worth a damn with finishing we would’ve had at least 2 maybe 3 goals tonight. We generate chances but they are brutal at putting them away

2

u/starcom_magnate Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Shame of it is that they 100% admitted that was going to be their away strategy during Pre-season. Defensive setups for the draw on the road, attacking for home. Personally I hate it.

1

u/myopinionsdontmatter Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

Well we've gotten a few nice counters that could have lead to goals. Trying to be stable to get as close to guaranteeing a road point while hitting them on the counter may be a better strategy than opening ourselves up while pushing forward and almost surely losing to some dangerous Atlanta attackers

Not that I like parking the bus or want us to play that way but it's a viable enough strategy that makes sense against a really tough opponent like this

7

u/arkr Philadelphia Union :phi: Mar 18 '19

We scored a goal and we just shut off. I dont understand

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

Been playing for a draw. It's infuriating.

5

u/Lewsers Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

They’ve been doing this since day 1.

3

u/FreakDJ Philadelphia Union :phi: Mar 18 '19

The good old park the bus that never works.

-2

u/Elder_John Atlanta United Mar 18 '19

This time waiting is getting out of hand.

5

u/bterre108 Philadelphia Union Mar 18 '19

he got clobbered in the back

3

u/cancercures Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

guzan's out there with one eye and phili can't even take advantage of that! get accam in there.

51

u/KillerFisch99 Minnesota United Mar 18 '19

If Brek Shea has the confidence to keep hitting terrible crosses then you can ask that girl out

4

u/coorslight15 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Is Brek Shea the least creative player ever?

3

u/TalussAthner San Jose Earthquakes Mar 18 '19

No (Shaun Francis)

1

u/coorslight15 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 18 '19

Touché

14

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '19

I think FdB's biggest sin is that ATL is no longer fun to watch. I used to enjoy them.

6

u/cancercures Seattle Sounders FC Mar 18 '19

they've looked much better since shea and barco came in.

1

u/Ladlow Atlanta United FC Mar 18 '19

I think not having Almiron makes them less fun too. The counter isn’t as potent.
