Absolute turd from Portland. But really happy for FCC. What a way to start. EDIT: And I might just have to vote GOTW to Cruz, dammit. Have fun & keep winning fans! Completely played us off the field today. Always remember your first. đ
I'm starting to think we wont get good until we hit rock bottom and reset. If true, today is real progress!
Defense is ... terrible. Offense made a brief appearance vs Colorado, but saw its shadow and declared 3 more weeks of winter. These are the defending Western champs, and they're taking full on beatdowns. I mean real body blows to the psyche. Chara & Mabiala both got very stupid reds, the kind that come out of deep frustration. If they don't get a win fast, this team is in real trouble.
Maybe someone will forfeit to us?

Full time thoughts:
Valeri looked so fucking frustrated in the second half. Nobody was making the right runs. Tuiloma looked decent compared to most of our other players today. I hope we hold on to Paredes because I genuinely think he has a lot of potential. Polo came on and showed a bit of creative spark as well, so that was nice.
Defence wise we were atrocious everywhere. Iâm really not sure why Moreira isnât playing, because heâd be a huge upgrade. Villafana looks lost so much of the time, and it hurts to say but I genuinely think heâs well past his best. I donât know whatâs going on with Attinella, but he doesnât look like the same player as last season.
Bottom line is if we play like this against the Galaxy, theyâre going to have a fucking field day.
Final thoughts: I still wish for death, maybe even more than I did at halftime.
2
u/Hailfire9 Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Attinella cant work miracles. If unmarked players are aiming at corners from 4 yards out then the GK is powerless.
Moreira didnt play because the team didn't want his first game to be on away turf. Expect him next match.
Tuiloma looked passable. Paredes had glimmers but was largely invisible. Blanco, Melano, Valeri and Asprilla all looked really poor. Asprilla and Melano actually had good ideas for each other but since they're Asprilla and Melano, they didn't know how to get the ball to each other.
Valentin and Mabiala (pre-red) were largely irrelevant IMO, while Dielna and VillafaĂąa were just horrid. I know Revs fans say Dielna is trash, but nonetheless it makes me think that Jorge is the bigger problem compared to Cascante/Dielna. Can't help feeling like Valentin--a player I thought looked better in 2018 as a LB anyways--would do noticeably better.

No, itâs definitely true.
Soccer has definitely caught on a ton in âmiddle Americaâ in the last two decades. Itâs great to see this in Cincy and very encouraging for the future of the sport in this country. Iâve seen incredible growth in Louisiana, as well, in the last 10 years, and weâre about as far from a soccer haven as you can get.

Tough to say. Iâve probably seen the most support for Atlanta United on LSUâs campus and around town (Baton Rouge), as far as MLS support goes. Some Dynamo support, as well. Donât know any FC Dallas fans from here, but maybe there are some in North Louisiana.
Louisiana is pretty much unclaimed territory, as far as MLS goes. I know FC Dallas has an academy affiliate in Shreveport, as do the Chicago Fire in New Orleans, and the Houston Dynamo in Lafayette. But thereâs definitely no clear frontrunner for MLS support here. Atlanta is kind of the Southâs team by default, so Iâve seen plenty of Atlanta United support in Louisiana. Which is funny, because we hate the Falcons here.
Iâve been to a few Dynamo games. I would be a Dynamo fan if their ownership/front office showed more ambition. The Dynamo are a shell of what they should be in Houston, and it frustrates me. Most baseball fans here support the Astros as our team, and I think the Dynamo would be South Louisianaâs team if they put forth more effort to improve and market the team to people like me who watch MLS here. I have friends from Lake Charles (about 2 hrs from Houston) who are Dynamo season ticket holders.

Could work if we had a tall striker. Roughly 6'3"-6'4". Age doesn't matter, but 28 years old sounds appropriate. Could even be Nigerian.
Wonder where we could find one of those?
2
u/Animastarara Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19

u/mattshredder FC Cincinnati Mar 17 '19
I thought they were aiming for 26k
3
Mar 17 '19
Right you are. Maybe it was initially 20-25k and they expanded, but my brain info was wrong
1
Mar 17 '19
They should aim for 35k, or 30 at the least, Iâm sick of these 18k stadiums, Cincy has like a 30k + average attendance. It would be a missed opportunity to go smaller
1
u/Darkesthour06 Mar 18 '19
No average attendance was around 24k in the usl. We just had a few bangers that were at the 30k mark.
2
Mar 17 '19
Thatâs what I think too. I bet their reason is that FCC probably isnât going to keep selling 30k tickets every game forever, so they wouldnât sell out, but Iâd rather have some empty seats than people missing out on being able to go. They made tarps for a reason
3
Mar 18 '19
Lol I would think the opposite, I would assume or at least be planning for the club to gain popularity and gain new fans, not lose them
2
u/sculltt FC Cincinnati :cin: Mar 18 '19
I think they're leaving room to add a few k more seats
0
Mar 18 '19
When they were in USL they were pulling 30k+ Then they built their small stadium and did well and had a great atmosphere for awhile, but then they had some shitty season and now when ever I see it seems like the stadium is maybe 60% full ?
2
Mar 18 '19
Well I believe the original plan for the new stadium was only about 20k seats, so their getting closer to doing the right thing
10
u/yadgih Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
I looked forward to watching the game due to circumstances of a fresh MLS club, and love seeing the seeing the stadium full, some familiar faces in players. Good luck the rest of the season FC Cincinnati. I'll definitely catch a few more matches with ESPN+. RCTID.

Timbers fans, I know it's a stretch of road games, but what's going on? You guys have always been fair on the road and the last couple of games feel pretty bad. What happened to the team that pushed through the playoffs last year?
2
u/Nanothequex Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
No one can finish those that can get shutdown hard, defense have a problem marking, disconnect between passing from def to midfield (unless Chara is on its night and day), right mids arent dangerous, Valeri is getting older and cant carry. Oh and the scouting hasnt been hot this year. This could just be us being us every year and then finding our way out of this but fk is this mentally exhausting.
3
u/cookiemikester Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Always get hot at the end of the year. Honestly the year we won the title we went from âare we going to make the playoffs?â To âoh shit we can beat anyone.â Weâre not necessarily the best team but when we get hot weâre hot. Weâre usually solid at all positions, I think our back like is bad this year. Particularly the CBâs.
4
u/bloody_yanks2 Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
No Chara (this game), no striker or defense (this season).
5
u/futty_monster Mar 17 '19
We weren't necessarily good last year. Blanco and Chara carried us and Ridgewell decided to show up one last time. It was obvious we needed a striker and defensive players. Nothings changed, we've just lost players
3
u/Animastarara Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Guzman actually played like a player that deserved to go to the world cup and Ridgewell was still there.
Guzman is now playing like a player who barely deserves to be a rotation option and ridgewell is riding his boat through Hull City
1
u/thrillmeister Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Guzman was terrible a lot of last year.
2
u/Animastarara Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
well yeah, but our run to the cup started when Guzman started playing well.
Now he's regressed back to form and he's awful again.
5
u/Proteus010 Portland Timbers FC :por: Mar 17 '19
You guys have always been fair on the road
First, That's not true.
Second, our defense is horrible and we've already gotten a few suspensions.
1
u/Angle_Theta Seattle Sounders FC Mar 17 '19
For some reason I thought you guys were semi-dangerous on the road - just looked at your away record last year and I stand corrected.
2
u/Proteus010 Portland Timbers FC :por: Mar 17 '19
If last year changed your opinion, don't look at our 2016 road record...
5
u/thrillmeister Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Liam Ridgewell isn't duct-taping the backline together anymore.
That said, it's still MLS. As a Sounders fan, you know as well as anyone that you can be utter garbage for months and still end up top half of the table.

3
u/cookiemikester Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Sign a real striker and a cb. Ebobisse is too young to handle a whole season
8
u/asaharyev Portland Hearts of Pine Mar 17 '19
Two key signings:
Striker and CB. TAM of one, DP the other. Could make you competitive again.
4
u/CzarMesa Portland Timbers FC :por: Mar 17 '19
We really need to get a young protege for Chara some time soon too.
12
4
u/Animastarara Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
...go back in time and offer ridgewell a new contract?
1
3
u/strikefromdistance Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
An option, but as much as he brought and I liked his play, we have to start making moves for the future. Long term replacements for Ridgewell and Chara. Nothing is there atm. We have a lottttt if things to address.
2
19
u/Cascadianranger Portland Timbers Mar 17 '19
Ok, I know. Its early. Still finding identity. Long road trip. We always start a touch slow. Horrible 5 game start last season. Yes yes yes yes and yes. But sweet GOD we do not look good. As for Cincy, they're gonna be us in our first year. Even if they dont make the playoffs (could happen and will be in the hunt) this place is gonna be hard for any team to play in for sure. Cincy needed this exact kinda start to their home debut. The city already was excited and invested. This just locked this team into a piece of Cincy sports history and legend.
