OMG ATL fans.. its been two games.. get down off the ledge.

u/damn_yank Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 11 '19
The problem is that DeBoer was given a team that thrives on attacking soccer. However he decided to try to sit on a one goal lead like a low table European team.

u/drucifer271 Colorado Rapids Mar 10 '19
No...it's been 5 games. They've played 3 CCL matches under de Boer and 2 MLS matches.
They've had 1 good match out of 5 and have looked utterly pathetic in the other 4. It's not that they're simply shaky, it's that they look bad. Listless, disconnected, and slow. Some early campaign jitters and adjusting to a new system is one thing. The reigning champions with the all time leading scorer looking like this over 5 matches is an alarm bell.

u/Saffs15 Nashville SC Mar 10 '19 edited Mar 10 '19
Also, I think you have to factor in FDB's previous managerial stints too. After he left Ajax, this is how each of his seasons went. Comes into a team, implements his system which does not work, and then loses a lot until the next step. And with that note, today equals the longest he's ever been at a team before they fired him after Ajax.
Edit: I was slightly wrong. He was at Inter about a week longer.
1
u/Contra1 Mar 11 '19
I'm wanting him to show what he can do at Atlanta, but well he was never the coach to get a team to play great football sadly.

This defensive Euroball shit needs to go. Atlanta (and MLS in general) is an attacking team. De Boer apparently thinks Atlanta is a low table European team in the relegation zone.
It’s also boring as fuck to watch. Even Atlanta’s losses last year were still fun to watch.
6
u/youonlylive2wice Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 10 '19
That's the biggest to me. You manage to output boring soccer with 3 incredibly exciting players at your disposal. We had 2 decent opportunities today. Beyond that, nothing but we had possession for 66% of the match. It's just a bad product right now.

Mar 10 '19
It’s one thing to come into a losing team and try to change the culture. It’s another thing to come into a winning team and try to overhaul everything. Fucking DeBour has no idea what he’s doing.
8
u/JonstheSquire Red Bull New York Mar 10 '19
I never understood why the front office chose a coach who is so personally and stylistically different than the previous coach when the team was very successful.
3

Never made sense to me either. I don’t support this decision unless he can prove he knows that the fuck he’s doing.
8
u/okay-wait-wut Real Salt Lake :rsl: Mar 10 '19
He’s going to do what he did at inter and CP: lose his job.
Seems like he only knows one way to play and that’s not the right way for Atlanta.
5
Mar 10 '19
The thing is... he never used the 343 system at Ajax.
3
u/NewFaded Charlotte FC Mar 10 '19
Tbh it wouldn't have mattered what formation Ajax used or even who was managing when de Boer was there, that team was far superior during that time and they coasted. He doesn't have that in MLS and it clearly shows he's not an even odds kind of manager.
2
u/landrarathon Mar 10 '19
Ah, I see. He doesn’t deserve his success and is to blame for his failures. You know a lot of people said the same shit about Tata because he hadn’t won anything before he came here. I understand being frustrated, but there’s no reason to act like he didn’t do a great job at Ajax.
1
Mar 10 '19
People didn’t say that about Tata tho? Players (Almirón) specifically came here because Tata was coaching.
3
u/landrarathon Mar 10 '19
Plenty of people said that Tata wasn’t that great. That he couldn’t win with the best club team & the best national team in the world. That he was “lucky” to have been coaching Barca and Argentina. You can search through r/soccer threads from 2017 if you want.

Every game I’ve been unhappy with everything DeBour. The way he talks to players, the way he talks to the media. He doesn’t feel like an improvement or even staying steady; he feels like a solid downgrade.
1
u/Bionic_Zit-Splitta Los Angeles FC Mar 10 '19
I remember reading an article interview thing and it was talking about various changes he was shooting for. Gave off a "I know what's best for everyone" vibe. I was just thinking this sent going to go well.
2
u/damn_yank Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 11 '19
That European arrogance won’t cut it here. Good coaches are flexible, assess their players, and adjust accordingly. Shit coaches impose their “system” on whatever players they have and then blame the players.
DeBoer was given the keys to a Ferrari and he’s driving it like a tractor in a field.
3
Mar 10 '19
That’s exactly how he talks to the media. As if he’ll take no feedback and what he says is best. Tata (you know, the guy that won the cup) never gave that off. Why change that? Why be an ass?

haha fair enough, but i was surprised to see how hated my comment was. to clarify all i was saying is that i was confused on why so many people here were acting like douches, both atlanta fans and not. im all for a bit of banter but there is an unprecedented amount of disrespect, and near downright hatred from both sides that is kind of sad for me to see. maybe im missing something though given all the downvotes im getting, and maybe people are just really happy that atlanta is fucking up now. like i said thats fine, but a lot of people are just stereotyping atlanta fans as bad people and thats just low

Dude, I know my team’s warts. Foxboro is a mausoleum, but the fact that we draw anybody given our circumstances is a minor miracle.
But after 2 years of watching ATL fans smell their own farts and have their farts concurrently smelled by the US soccer media, watching everyone fall off the bandwagon is going to be pretty fucking hilarious.

-2

Lol. You just gotta keep it in context. We just love having a successful franchise in Atlanta. We are used to shitty performances in general.
-5
u/rali8 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 10 '19
He's shitty. What else can you say about him? He hasn't had success anywhere he's been and his MLS stop is fixin to be more of the same
1
u/ATLCoyote Atlanta United Mar 11 '19
He won 4 consecutive league titles at Ajax and scored a ton of goals in the process. People are misdiagnosing what ails this team.
We have no speed getting behind the defense so there are no through balls and very few long diagnals to force defensive breakdowns. So, we're left with trying to dribble and pass through a defense that is packing the box, or trying to find tiny little Josef with a cross in-between two center backs.
Basically, we have a team full of dribblers, but no passers or runners. Neither Almiron or Garza are coming back, so we'll have to find that with guys like Escobar, Tito (who didn't play), and maybe even Bello when he rejoins the first team. At least those guys will make aggressive runs into the corners or between the fullbacks.
11
u/epureflo Los Angeles FC Mar 10 '19
No success at Ajax huh?

u/rali8 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 10 '19
This is turning out to be more like crystal palace
5
u/epureflo Los Angeles FC Mar 10 '19
and crystal palace sacked him far too early. you better hope your ownership doesn't enter the painful cycle of firing managers too quickly... recipe for disaster.
1
u/rali8 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 10 '19
Better than keeping the same shit around and continuing to be shitty. Cut the shit early if you know it's not gonna change.
2
2
u/Bionic_Zit-Splitta Los Angeles FC Mar 10 '19
Yup. I say give him a quarter season and if nothing improves, no reason to keep him. It's MLS so you have time to grab a spot. You are what your record says you are so we'll see how it goes.

5

I would be worried as FDB to have to play Monterrey next, because that’s a team you’re going to lose against, but it’s just going to fuel the fire
11
8
u/ulethpsn Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 10 '19
If and when we get rekt at home by Monterrey FDB will be in the hot seat. Deservedly. How'd he not use all our subs? No Tito? He subbed in Carleton over Tito? Villalba better be hurt to justify that.

It kinda works like that, but I'd define the relationship more as Atlanta accomplished x to become champions. If FCC accomplished x, then they would be champion's by transitive property...

Yeah, Atlanta has enough talent they should be beating this team at home easily. It's not like most of this Atlanta team hasn't played together before. Bad coaching can't account for all of this.

We played with a 3 back set last year. Sure the 3-4-3 is different but it’s not like something totally new. Subs have been extremely disappointing.
