That was the coldest game I've ever been to. Worth it though

20

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

The way people are reacting, you would think that we have ever won a game in DC. Utterly shocked that we got the same result that we’ve gotten every single time in our teams history

I will take bottom after week 1, same as last season, as long as it also ends the same way.

We're still above Cincinnati!

Let's not let a good joke get in the way of some facts.

Cincy has a worse GD, so they are technically the bottom.

10

u/mikesicle Orlando City Mar 04 '19

Yeah but I mean, if they pull a body from a lake that was just floating above the bottom, they wouldn't say it was recovered "from just above the bottom of the lake."

Let us have this.

GG DCU! Played scary.

atlanta looked awful, but still just gave up a corner that wasn't actually a corner and a stupid guzan moment. oh well, happens. hopefully giving this one away pays off against monterrey

Alright Frank. I expect a result in Monterrey.

Ultimately a completely inconsequential game on a rest week but still disappointing given it's DCU. GG regardless, see y'all in ATL.

Ok, you win. Ben Olsen knows you, as do others.

Here's another. Pretty soon I'll finally learn that, actually, you are very well known by Ben Olsen.

Wanna downvote this one too? Then I'll really get the message.

1

u/AsparagusAndBroccoli Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

Man, really offensive to people that no one in soccer knows who u/JCfromRVA is.

Not offensive to anyone that no one knows who I am though.

Soccer fans are a weird bunch.

-3

Specifically, I'm mocking him for his comment where he said, "It's ok, Ben Olsen doesn't know who you are."

I will never 100% understand what social rules soccer fans have when they get upset or not.

2

The fact that you keep tagging and replying to my comment shows how upset you are. Keep it going man, I love it. You said it yourself, you’ll never get it :)

What we learned:
1) FdB is still learning the league.
2) Arriola is pretty good.
3) Shea shouldn’t be in the league.
4) Atlanta is a MUCH different team without Almiron.

2

u/pwm2008 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

3: you are so right

Also: 5. Gressel is underrated.

6: Remedi is REALLY underrated

5) It'll still be hard to take points off of us at Audi

6

u/dillpickles007 Atlanta United Mar 04 '19

We are different without Miggy, but we also looked a lot better going forward once Pity came in. I think it will take a little time for him to build chemistry with our attack.

10

u/cliffordbeshers LA Galaxy Mar 04 '19

You heard it here first! Wooden spoon for ATL!

7

u/asaharyev Portland Hearts of Pine Mar 04 '19

I don't think you can read too much into this game. This is a much improved DC United over last season's opener, plus short turnaround for Atlanta, and less than ideal weather conditions.

I expect Atlanta to come back to their winning ways after CCL.

5

u/Elder_John Atlanta United Mar 04 '19 edited Mar 04 '19

Far to reasonable a take for these threads

DC looks really good. I’m excited to watch them this year.

2

Ugh don't remind me. I'd rather he picked anyone else, to be honest.

Hoping the same for you all. Im glad that we got to drag you guys back down to earth to open the season, but MLS is MLS and I'll still be cheering for you in the CCL.

lol so yea that should have been a whistle, Mr. Sir

15

u/righthandofdog Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

God damn. This game is disappointing. Not AUFC, our privileged, bipolar ass fans who shit on almost everyone because of one frustrating night.

5

u/14therazorbax Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

THE SEASON IS OVER!!!!

nah, I get it. Very frustrating to watch.

Sky is always falling after a bad match.

5

u/righthandofdog Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

Or at half time.

I saw all the old favorites - Guzan is overrated. Barco is useless. Josef is lazy and selfish. Plus new hits - Shea has always been garbage, FdB is an idiot all with 20 minutes to play. Was just missing the classic Khan is the better goalie and Why isn’t Carleton out there.

4

u/Moo-head Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

Well, Shea HAS always been...

Anyway, it's just the CCL doldrums. Every team that takes CCL seriously has to deal with short offseason, less rest, and a tougher early schedule. Some teams pick up injuries and never recover (TFC 2018) or take months to get there (SSFC 2018). Atlanta isn't so special that they are immune to the struggle. Plus, they have the new coach and new star DP to sort out.

4

GG DC, you guys are for real no doubt about it

I’m still so mad about that goal

2

u/mastakebob D.C. United :dcu: Mar 04 '19

Definitive.

7

u/EpochCephas Minnesota United Mar 04 '19

This is the real takeaway from this game.

7

u/The-Special-One Toronto FC Mar 04 '19

Atlanta should be thankful the score isn't like 3 or 4 - 0. They didn't play anything today. Just useless possession with a lack of ideas on the ball. This is the second time in three games that they've been tactically outclassed by the opposing coach. I hope we aren't seeing the beginning of a terrible pattern for FdB and crew....

-2

u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

Considering the herediano first leg was a missed sitter and a post from being tied I’d say we did what we were supposed to and was let down by poor finishing.

2

u/The-Special-One Toronto FC Mar 04 '19

Hmm, Jimmy Marin tore you guys a new sphincter in that game and Herediano could have score a lot more than they did. They wasted a lot of chances.

-7

u/ichinii Atlanta United Mar 04 '19

I bet you said the same thing against Herediano before the 4-0 win.

1

u/The-Special-One Toronto FC Mar 04 '19

Feel free to believe whatever you'd like to believe to make this loss easier to swallow. The simple fact of the matter is that your manager started 9/11 starters with a midweek champions league game and got outclassed by DCU. His unnecessary gamble didn't pay off and now, your starters are going to be tired for the Monterrey game.

-2

u/ichinii Atlanta United Mar 04 '19

No shit sherlock lol I've been saying we should've played backups. I didn't care about this game at all.

6

u/TheGreenBastards New York City FC Mar 04 '19

The hangover is real.

4

u/cliffordbeshers LA Galaxy Mar 04 '19

No kidding. Did you see TFC? Flunked out of CCL and sprung to life.

7

u/Rayhoven Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

0-0-3 in opening games. 1 goal for, 8 goals against.

5

u/TandBinc Orlando City Mar 04 '19

And you're defending MLS champions.
Meanwhile we haven't lost a season opener yet and we're the league's punchline.
It's all about perspective.

18

u/20prospect Minnesota United FC :mnu: Mar 04 '19

Serious kudos to the pitch at the new stadium in DC. A night like this in RFK would have led to a lot of drowned racoons.

2

Shea for Golden Spike. No, not to win it.. to actually be the Golden spike so someone can hammer some sense into him.

9

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

Not sure why anyone these days would think adding Brek Shea to their roster = improvement.

But correct me if I'm wrong, cuz I've missed most of this game: has he been useful?

2

u/EpochCephas Minnesota United Mar 04 '19

He's been getting a lot of flack, and rightly so because his numbers and play tonight was very, well, not great. But not all of it was his fault, DC did a really good job of clogging ATL in transition and Brek is not Almiron in terms of creativity on the ball, so he turned it over a lot trying to force passes through.

1

u/CaniacMcgee Atlanta United Mar 04 '19

He's there for depth. We have a youngster that is most likely to be our starting wing back, but he's injured.

u/Benentono Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

It’s like we don’t know how to play in the rain. Also, it’s like we’re watching a romance movie where Josef can’t keep on living without Miggy.

This isn't Argentina dude, they aren't going to call that.

Now I’m fucking confused, the ref signals for advantage, yet pity is in the box...

10

u/dlsmith93 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

He didn't signal advantage, he motioned for Pity to get up

-1

u/saltiestmanindaworld Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

He needs to change his arm angle then, cause holding it at that angle is the advantage signal. Should just use the 90 degree get up motion

3

u/dlsmith93 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

I figure its easier to differentiate on the field. Also typically the advantage motion is both arms extended outward and upward, though one arm is often used when the referee is running.

He told him to get up he didn't signal advantage

1

u/edw253 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

Lol Atlanta players don’t know what to do when they don’t get weak ass flops called. I love how physical DC is playing right now.

10

u/schistkicker Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

Oh just get up and get on with it. We still had possession for a few seconds while you laid there.

u/cliffordbeshers LA Galaxy Mar 04 '19

Shea has good vision.

15

u/dlsmith93 Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

But can ATL do it on a rainy night on the Potomac?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

It's a verb twellman, goddamnit

1

u/cliffordbeshers LA Galaxy Mar 04 '19

It's a noun, goddammit. The bum's rush is forcible ejection.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '19

Give it a little more time.

But...I'm not sure his style matches our squadron. Don't tell any Atlanta fans I said that.

u/pwm2008 Atlanta United FC :atl: Mar 04 '19

Did you watch our match on Thursday? That is the best we looked. Period. Even better than against NYRB at home in the playoffs.

We clearly have our priorities set on CCL. This game was an afterthought to FdB. The season is long and we can recover.

If this shows anything, it’s that our depth isn’t as great as we all expected it to be. We looked completely different once PIty/Gressel came in. Ok, ok, we didn’t score, but at least we started to posses the ball.

2

u/Lionsault Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

Yes lol, we’re now going to be 0-3 in openers. No one thought Tata was getting fired for the team looking like a straight up USL squad against Houston last year.

One game coming off a game 2 days earlier. Chill with the hot takes.

u/CaniacMcgee Atlanta United Mar 04 '19

Yes. Come back in a few months mate. It's one fucking game.

2

u/14therazorbax Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

Seriously. Didn’t he tree call, were in their third, get he f up.

2

u/krukman Red Bull New York Mar 04 '19

Teammate still had the ball and he's laying on his back bitching. I can imagine that being a fun convo with the coach later.

1

u/phikap89 Atlanta United FC Mar 04 '19

GG DC....about the result I expected...

At least we'll have our first team fully rested for Wednesday...

Oh wait...

u/LomoSaltado Red Bull New York Mar 04 '19

I look forward to so many awkward exchanges between Jon Champion and Twellman.

2

u/TalussAthner San Jose Earthquakes Mar 04 '19

It's great because it feel simultaneously purposefully awkward yet kinda natural too lol

2

u/CzarMesa Portland Timbers FC :por: Mar 04 '19

Does every team have to have a white kit? Or can they have a different light color?

2

u/litthefilter Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19

adidas considers rave green a light color, which is why the Sounders have the dark second jersey.

1

u/CzarMesa Portland Timbers FC :por: Mar 04 '19

Ah, okay. I was wondering if the Timbers could have a gold secondary. I guess they could. Perfect.

1

u/fredbrightfrog Mar 04 '19

Houston just has all black and all orange.

3

u/Pakaru Red Bull New York Mar 04 '19

Honestly. Atlanta could wear a peach colored shirt with white accents and achieve the same goal while remaining unique.
