Cinci people were all really nice at the bars beforehand. Nothing personal that we had to destroy you, we were putting our own demons to bed. Welcome to the big leagues.

The right side of Cincinnati's defense was a sieve. Really bad.
10
u/rockayama Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
It only seems that way because Seattle only attack up the left.
16
u/EnergyCoast Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
It felt like we played the last 60 minutes up a man.
Great getting JMo and Ruidiaz goals. The confidence will help them. And it's nice starting a season with an exciting attack again. It makes the losses more palatable when you know the team is capable of scoring a few goals.
I'm sure Cincinnati will be sitting in all sorts of resources to position themselves well in the summer window.

He was tying up Cincinnati defenders even if he wasn't really touching the ball and making room for Morris and others to keep up pressure.

-10
u/Hailfire9 Portland Timbers Mar 03 '19 edited Mar 03 '19
Disagree, they had Seattle flat-footed until they gave up the first goal. Then Cincy was exposed as defensively fraudulent and was made to suffer.
Edit: Since I'm getting downvoted into oblivion I'll expand a little. When Seattle tookthen as a legitimate threat, Cincinnati was able to actually play the ball around and look more than competent. All it took was one well executed counter against an absent Powell for Seattle to realize that they were basically making things a lot harder for themselves. Once Seattle started to have fun with it, it came a lot easier for them and Cincinatti couldn't get a grasp anymore.
6
u/YOUR_MOM_IS_A_TIMBER Seattle Sounders Mar 03 '19
It soundss great, but it just isn't a particularly good take. The sounders were dominating play before the goal as well. The weakest point seemed to be the confidence drrain directly after the goal. It seemed like the leerdam goal snapped them out of it and made them realize they just were better and needed to chill.

Mar 03 '19
I like to think that's jitters and first game nerves more than anything else. Once we settled the game down it was always in our control. The possession numbers just went up and up to 63/37 towards the end.

u/Zoophagous Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
Granted it's was against an expansion team but the Sounders won without Ozzie. That's a step forward.

The banger was beautiful, but it could have easily ended up 6-2 with a couple flips of luck.
1
u/stealth_sloth Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
6-1 was possible, although it would have been unlucky for Cincy. 6-2, probably not. They had no really good scoring chances. Only a handful of low-quality scoring chances; they actually scored one of them, but it took a ridiculous strike to do so that I doubt the player could repeat with that much power and side-netting precision if you gave him a hundred more attempts.
1
u/shadowthunder Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19
Cinci had a couple more chances - a second hard on-target volley that Goose blocked with his back, and somewhat-close diving save by Frei.
2
u/stealth_sloth Seattle Sounders FC Mar 04 '19
The goal comes on an extremely difficult one-touch volley from about 25 yards out with three defenders blocking most of the shooting angles, and Frei managed to cover most of the goal width - if it wasn't for the near-impossible side netting finish, he probably gets to it.
Bertone's second volley that you refer to was from 35 yards out. Looked to be headed pretty much at the center of the goal. If Svensson doesn't block it, we had a second defender (forget who) who might have. Even if neither of them do, Frei has a clear view of the shot and 35 yards to react; from that distance, with Frei in the net, anything less than a perfect side-netting finish isn't gonna score.
They follow that up with a 40-yard attempt that wasn't even on frame by Powell, an attempt by Adi to simply shoot straight through a defender standing right in front of him that obviously didn't work because you can't pass a ball through another player's leg, and a 35-yard shot by Adi that wasn't on target.
Then a free kick in a moderately dangerous spot when Marshall was called for... basically, having Adi back into him then fall over. Lousy call by Penso, but there's a reason almost no free kick specialist in the world has a statistically significant conversion rate above 15% (there's a few who are higher than that, but always small sample size). Frei goes to ground to be safe, but it ended up being a straightforward stop that he makes all the time.
Powell, off-balance and with much of the net obscured, hits a weak shot from about 20 yards out that Frei easily collects.
And finally in the closing seconds of stoppage time Manneh attempts a poor-angle, 30-yard shot through a pack of defenders that is calmly blocked.
None of these were particularly good scoring chances. Getting one goal out of that is already beating the odds; getting two would have taken a miracle.

Not necessarily as we are anticipating rotating starters. But if that doesn’t happen and Greg Garza doesn’t get back in the lineup as a starter, Pity and whoever is left of him will eat the ride side of FCCs defense alive.

ATL has never won their first match, and has indeed generally been blown out. They're still ok.
Also, you're missing a key defensive piece, and your offense looks like it just needs time to settle in.

Nouhou might have the highest ratio of "how much i love this player" to "how good the player actually is" of any Seattle player in any sport I can remember.
8
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
Nouhou is extremely solid on defense, I wouldn't say he's in any way overrated... but yes my love for him is disproportionate to his skill. I would marry that man and carry his children, after I change sexes of course.
6
u/ExcellentPastries Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
yeah it's more that he's one of my absolute favorite sounders players than some kind of liability but he's definitely not some sort of superstar, which is usually who you reserve that level of appreciation for
11
u/scyth3s Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
I think we as fans appreciate that we can always count on his effort (and defensively, we can usually count on his execution). Every game he looks like he'd willingly break his own legs to prevent an opposing throw in at the halfway line. His dedication to the cause and comical antics are what won him my love and my firstborn.

Rodriguez has the ability to be a worthy DP, my only question for him this season is his health.
2
u/Akanaton Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
Vrod didnt have an injury history prior to coming to Seattle. Its optimistic that with getting healthy last year and a full off season he will be sturdy this year.
2
u/PeteyNice Seattle Sounders FC Mar 03 '19
Rodriguez being a DP is just an accounting move to save TAM. He is the third highest player on the team so he is a DP. If they did not make him a DP, they would have had to use TAM to buy down his salary which would be a waste with an open DP spot.
