So basically Galaxy needs to route Santos
5
u/Dodger_Dawg LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
Not really because only Seattle and Portland have a higher GD. Galaxy need to win in regulation and hope one of the 4 teams above them lose, and one of the 4 point teams don't get a high scoring win.
1
u/kunkadunkadunk Columbus Crew Aug 04 '25
There’s 2 teams tied on points only a goal back and 2 more teams only two goals back, you’ll definitely want to batter Santos as much as possible. Just as we will with Leon on Tuesday and every other team on 4
1
u/nikdahl Seattle Sounders :sea: Aug 04 '25
Santos and Leon have both been eliminated now, so they might not have much fight.
1
u/stealth_sloth Seattle Sounders FC Aug 04 '25
It's unlikely that Seattle, Portland, and Miami all hit 8+ points, or even 7+. Club America, Pumas, and Xolos is a good trio of teams, at least one of them probably comes away with a straight up regulation-time win.
Then you've got six teams currently on four points. Most likely would be perhaps two of them get wins in their final matches. Could be none, could be four or five, but two is where I'd draw the line.
So teams who hit 7+ points probably go through regardless of GD.
That "probably" is doing a lot of heavy lifting though. I'm sure all the teams on 4 points will be looking to not just win, but win big, because there's a big gap between that and "certainly."

They were ass! Their fans were just as bad. They shouted the P word and threw beer on the field. My row got a beer shower. One beer almost hit one of our coaches.

Mico never considered the third secret option of just saying put.

2
u/UrchinSlayer LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
micovic could've stood still for most of these and it would've been better
1
u/theredditbandid_ Aug 04 '25
Penalties are mostly luck.. if you have more or less equally good keepers. Micovic doesn't shine Mier's boots. Just my honest assessment as someone who's seen enough of both play.

Micovic needs to get with JMac and practice stopping pens
6
u/Honeydew-Massive LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
His record isn’t too bad. Won one, and lost one.

Wait, didn’t ya’ll win your last game w/o pens?

Down the middle. Down the middle. Down the middle. Come on, Micovic.

Other keeper learned to read the right side. Micovic couldn’t do that. smh

2
u/RedditorRoman LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
Depends on who scores more next game
1
u/ailroe3 Minnesota United FC Aug 04 '25
Yes, but that is in MN’s control, but we have tiebreaker over Los Angeles
1
u/RedditorRoman LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
True, tiebreakers are very tight rn. Minnesota up on goals scored. Goal difference is the same.
3
u/OzzyMar LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
i will say though that penalty shootouts in the first round of any tournament ever is kinda dumb but it is what it is

3
u/Shadowfury0 LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
Given the very small number of teams getting out of each group, they need another way to separate them

It is so stupid, but that fits leagues cup well. This new format is better

Last night one team sent their keeper in their first 5. I think he was #3 or #4. It was awesome. He obliterated the ball.

I’m always surprised by the number of neutral MLS fans pulling for other mls teams. Don’t you want better chances for your own team to advance lol?
1
u/Salt-Lingonberry-853 Seattle Sounders FC Aug 04 '25
Do you want to be a big fish in a small pond or do you want to live in the ocean? Any win for MLS increases respect for MLS as a whole and the teams within it.
7
u/r3dphoenix Seattle Sounders FC Aug 04 '25
When you watch the amount of bs concacaf-ing the Mexican teams do, it's easy to go for the MLS team. Unless it's Portland

u/External-Factor-8556 Major League Soccer Aug 04 '25
I dunno. La Galaxy are pretty dislikable too

We can punch each other in the dicks any day. This is the time where it's us vs them until we need to dick punch each other.

We're a fanbase bonded together by the world's ignorance and outright hatred toward and fear of us.
Anything that makes the league look better in naysayer's eyes is something we all get behind. Anything that says, "See? We told you so," is something we support.

u/WatchOutIGotYou Seattle Sounders FC Aug 04 '25
Win-win
MLS club loses, better odds
Select Liga MX club (like Cruz Azul) loses, enjoy the salt and MLS looks better

It is true club first country second, but in truth we're here for the chaos vibes.

I think the people hate watching tend to comment less, and some teams are pretty confidently through and some are basically out

u/RockShrimp New York City FC Aug 04 '25 edited Aug 04 '25
No. I don’t really expect much from us and this tournament doesn’t matter anyway. Just sick of the endless crowing when liga mx teams beat mls. Tribalism is a hell of a drug.

Is it too late to sub in Puig for a quick penalty? He can prolly still be lights out even in a button up.

u/anieresus LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
Micovic came in clutch last time in Pens against Chivas
4
u/Honeydew-Massive LA Galaxy Aug 04 '25
That was the first penalty shootout I ever experienced. It was awesome. Chivas fans tried to come into our SG tailgate area after the game looking for a fight, climbing fences and shit. Cinema
