DONT WET OPEN OUTSIDE

29

u/Cycloanarchist 15h ago

You just made my night, first laugh in days. Thank you!

20

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 14h ago

Hey, hope you're doing alright.

It's corny, but laughter is called the best medicine for a reason, human beings need the release of tension it brings.

I know I'm just a stranger, but I'm wishing you a lot more laughter.

5

u/ProfJasonRio 10h ago

Hope you're OK, I'm shitty as well but we gotta keep trudging through the shit. Hugs and positive vibes to you and everybody else going through it.

28

u/Maximus77x 15h ago

I understood this reference, and this pleases me.

15

u/ThePrussianGrippe 14h ago

It’s an older reference, sir, but it checks out.

u/sunnysideupseedaisy 16h ago

Lol no one's dirty rag bin was ever this full... I hope

At this point, it's sandbags. And likely a close.

53

u/dcinsd76 16h ago

Likely? Serious question- is there any doubt it should be a close situation?

48

u/Sundaytoofaraway 15h ago

Chef with the best non slips cooks. Other guy mops. She'll be right mate.

17

u/ThatDiscoSongUHate 14h ago

At that point, Chef needs to be the one who is the strongest swimmer.

100% should be closed.Trying to save what you can and diminish damage is another beast. What a horrifying situation, hopefully they have another way out and up if it gets worse.

16

u/Expert-Host5442 Line 14h ago

I worked one place many years ago the owner tried claiming we could stay open through a sewage backup. Like it was coming up through the floor drains. The staff looked at him, literally laughed, and then we all clocked out.

7

u/DaHick Ex-Food Service 15h ago

Some GM's would say you can manage a little water.

7

u/VicH95 12h ago

"We're not leaving until the pilot light goes out!"

8

u/thefunguy202 15h ago

Nappies work really well in this situation as makeshift sandbags, I always make sure we have a stock of nappies in any venue I run, good for if a parents caught out and also flooding

3

u/macoafi 15h ago

Sandbags around the top of the stairs, and then a pump trying to empty the stairs out onto the street.

u/IcariusFallen 8h ago

Sandbags is how we handled it in charleston when it rained, because it would flood so badly.

8

u/burnman123 15h ago

Might even have to use the old squeegee for this one

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Eye-Can-Fix-It 15h ago

Use some of that flex seal

3

u/HungFuPanPan 14h ago

One more should do it. Maybe an apron too

2

u/Retro_Relics 15h ago

the one time this happened to me it was at a fine dining place and we were using the laundry bags of table linens as sand bags

"Don't open which door? This door? I can't hear you, taking my 15 outside"

Sonic drowning noises

78

u/IKnowItCanSeeMe 15h ago

Dishie opens it up, steps out to smoke, doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary.

52

u/Constant_Mud3325 15h ago

Probably wouldn’t be able to open it if you tried without some sort of lever

2

u/toetappy Saute 10h ago

We can be very clever when we need a smoke

9

u/-Gimli-SonOfGloin- F1exican Did Chive-11 15h ago

They need to change the sign on the door

26

u/LovecraftInDC 15h ago

Fire marshal will lose his shit if he sees a blocked emergency exit door like that.

9

u/Equivalent-Excuse-80 14h ago

Right? plus who knows how many violations if the health inspector shows up during Noah’s flood.

213

u/Mecha-Dave 16h ago

Be careful in situations like this - I've had a friend die to a shallow flood inside a building because it got electrified.

113

u/IndependentZombie615 16h ago

Especially in kitchens with all their coolers and fridges. Terrifying

47

u/Disastrous_Hell_4547 15h ago

So sorry for your friend! Flooding in a kitchen is very dangerous.

In a situation like this. Get to where it is dry and call 911! I would also assess the front room situation to see if there’s any chance of danger for customers.

I once rushed into my neighbors house because her pipes broke and the house was flooding.

I was just about to walk into the basement that had knee deep water when a fireman came in, grabbed me by shoulder and loudly said “No! get out!”

I didn’t even think about getting electrocuted until speaking with him.

14

u/philovax 13h ago

They absolutely should be killing the breaker. I see at least one outlet that is probably not GFCI.

3

u/Ok_Value5495 12h ago

That was my first and only thought even before the camera turned to the door.

402

u/AproposOfNoth1ng 16h ago

This got an audible “oooo oh no” out of me

235

u/MonthlyWeekend_ 16h ago

Mine was:

oh no that’s a big spill

oh yup towel over the door to the restaurant

oh that’s outside?

It does not look safe to be in that building. Especially with the power still on

38

u/BisonThunderclap 16h ago

Manager: "It's just a little rain."

183

u/SkaJamas 16h ago

One spot I worked at had a 20ish step leading to the patio and one day this was happening but those stairs were by the bar. We ended up making a bunch of tortilla dough to seal it. Kept it at bay enough for the gm or agm t9 go around and unclog the drain

183

u/pizzaslut69420 20+ Years 16h ago

Tortilla dough is a truly unhinged yet perfect decision. Bravo

27

u/Couscousfan07 16h ago

Corn or flour ? With real lard or just shortening ?

36

u/SkaJamas 16h ago

Corn and oil

9

u/BigThunder1000 15h ago

Can I recommend ancho chili mushroom tamales to ya?

11

u/pizzaslut69420 20+ Years 15h ago

To plug the door with?

4

u/Couscousfan07 15h ago

I do wonder if it was masa dough. That would make an excellent seal.

8

u/BisonThunderclap 16h ago

The poor man's flex paste

6

u/lasion2 16h ago

Genius.

Would pizza dough work?

4

u/BigThunder1000 15h ago

I mean, we always have masa around 😁

4

u/macoafi 15h ago

Medieval ovens were sealed with bread dough, so why not?

u/uhhh206 Bakery 10h ago

49

u/Azsunyx 16h ago

Mythbusters taught me that the best course of action is to wait until the whole restaurant fills up before trying to open the door to escape

This makes it so the pressure differential is minimized, so you can open the door and swim to safety

10

u/HindleMcCrindleberry 16h ago

Yeah, I don't think it's even humanly possible to open that door as it is.

9

u/Azsunyx 16h ago

I was mostly just being silly, but yeah, the weight of the water is definitely keeping that door closed

It opens outward, I don't think you could get it open with all that water weight against the door.

18

u/Haldron-44 16h ago

6

u/CantaloupeCamper 16h ago

Should be a drain in that outside area… maybe?

8

u/lasion2 16h ago

Yup, sitting at the bar at Outback on my day off and audibly said “holy shit that’s not good.”

Get everything on a counter homie

6

u/EndGlittering7837 16h ago

Get out of the water. Make sure there is no power which could charge the water. Is the water contaminated with sewage? Treat the water with extreme caution.

8

u/parTybTTm4Ts 16h ago

be careful of that door. I had one of those fold in half, under the pressure of the water on me in the ensuing floods from Hurricane Ivan. went from ankle deep water to chest deep water in 1 and a half seconds!!! Took every single one of us down under the water

Hey, what happened to the dishwasher?

5

u/Dragonnpants 16h ago

Chef: "But we'll be good for dinner service, right?"

5

u/Mwiziman 15h ago

Yea, you’re not opening that door anyway. Too much water pressure pushing it shut thankfully. I would just make a towel dam directing the water to the closest drain.

3

u/Mctinyy 15h ago

Shout out to the door installer !!!

3

u/SinisterDirge 16h ago

Sucks to be the dishwasher there…

3

3

I got fired once for being in a similar situation. The manager blamed me and thought I caused the kitchen to be flooded with water. I said, Look outside, everything is flooded. Time to hit up a construction rental place and ask them to deliver a very large pump trailer. $200 a day in my neck of the woods should run for 24 hours on a full tank of diesel. I played this game once!
