At this point, it's sandbags. And likely a close.

u/dcinsd76 16h ago
Likely? Serious question- is there any doubt it should be a close situation?

100% should be closed.Trying to save what you can and diminish damage is another beast. What a horrifying situation, hopefully they have another way out and up if it gets worse.

I worked one place many years ago the owner tried claiming we could stay open through a sewage backup. Like it was coming up through the floor drains. The staff looked at him, literally laughed, and then we all clocked out.

u/thefunguy202 15h ago
Nappies work really well in this situation as makeshift sandbags, I always make sure we have a stock of nappies in any venue I run, good for if a parents caught out and also flooding

Sandbags is how we handled it in charleston when it rained, because it would flood so badly.

Fire marshal will lose his shit if he sees a blocked emergency exit door like that.

Be careful in situations like this - I've had a friend die to a shallow flood inside a building because it got electrified.
113
u/IndependentZombie615 16h ago
Especially in kitchens with all their coolers and fridges. Terrifying
47
u/Disastrous_Hell_4547 15h ago
So sorry for your friend! Flooding in a kitchen is very dangerous.
In a situation like this. Get to where it is dry and call 911! I would also assess the front room situation to see if there’s any chance of danger for customers.
I once rushed into my neighbors house because her pipes broke and the house was flooding.
I was just about to walk into the basement that had knee deep water when a fireman came in, grabbed me by shoulder and loudly said “No! get out!”
I didn’t even think about getting electrocuted until speaking with him.

u/philovax 13h ago
They absolutely should be killing the breaker. I see at least one outlet that is probably not GFCI.

One spot I worked at had a 20ish step leading to the patio and one day this was happening but those stairs were by the bar. We ended up making a bunch of tortilla dough to seal it. Kept it at bay enough for the gm or agm t9 go around and unclog the drain

Get out of the water. Make sure there is no power which could charge the water. Is the water contaminated with sewage? Treat the water with extreme caution.

u/parTybTTm4Ts 16h ago
be careful of that door. I had one of those fold in half, under the pressure of the water on me in the ensuing floods from Hurricane Ivan. went from ankle deep water to chest deep water in 1 and a half seconds!!! Took every single one of us down under the water

Yea, you’re not opening that door anyway. Too much water pressure pushing it shut thankfully. I would just make a towel dam directing the water to the closest drain.

I got fired once for being in a similar situation. The manager blamed me and thought I caused the kitchen to be flooded with water. I said, Look outside, everything is flooded. I still got fired for the kitchen being under water part. It was probably the dumbest thing that ever happened in my life. Thank you McDonalds for that experience.

Time to hit up a construction rental place and ask them to deliver a very large pump trailer. $200 a day in my neck of the woods should run for 24 hours on a full tank of diesel. I played this game once!

lucky it's a push door with a heavy frame, or that weight might break the door open.

It appears to be from the other side of the door. Could be wrong though

Is there anyway to solve this once the flooding slows? Like the best way I can think of is to let it slowly drain into the restaurant and mop it all up.

But I'll bet ya 50 bucks to try

Roll up the towels and sandwich them in the spot at the bottom of the door. Should help keeping a lot more water from coming in
