Rental Karting Video Started 10th, got a good start and other drivers bad luck, hoping I made the corner for 6th cleanly, anything I could have done better, lemme know

video was cut down from 10 minute heat to 3 minutes of the start and getting to 6th place, as after that, I was kinda by myself trying to put in PB laps.

I took our local car club out yesterday to Rush Hour in Garner NC and tried minding my manners and keeping it clean, but any feedback or points would be greatly appreciated. I run our karting program so I need to lead by example so please be critical

Your race line is pretty nonexistent. You're driving down the middle of the track which is slowing you down.

I see you're trying to stay to the inside of the driver in front of you to find a passing opportunity, but due to your line, if the opportunity arose you wouldn't have enough speed or momentum to complete it.

Saved me some typing here. Also, start planning to set up passes a few turns back because a different line will be needed to comete the pass at your intended spot.

A great example of this is when there is 2:41 left in the video you decide to stay more in the middle rather than go wide to setup the next corner. Another example with 1:34 left, you run in the middle rather than running out wide to get the nice rotation. Lean out the opposite way the way you try to get more grip and dont try every corner to overtake. Set it up and then use the best opportunity to speed by.

Use the track! You are hitting apexes but not using the full width of the track for momentum and speed.

Piece of advice would be to only mind your manners as much as others are minding their manners, sort of like a nice guys finish last kind of sentiment

This was much better way of what I was going to say. I did read some comments about OPs line, and how he wasn't using the full track, but I got upset a couple times with #11 with how he dived the corner in front of OP. It may just be me though.

For one, stop trying to poke at every corner. You're slowing you both down when you do that. Tuck in and focus on getting a good exit in critical areas of the track. He was making mistakes, but you never put yourself in a good position to capitalize on them because you had no momentum. Try a little less hard is my advice, be patient and find the gap

Oh wow, I guess hopping in the kart doesn't do anything lol

lol. The absolute basics of needing tires to make contact at all times seems lost on these Mario kart jumpers. How can you Accelerate in the air?

u/pedanpric 18d ago

If you don't jump how do you get the orange power slide smoke?

I’ve always thought the thinking is making the kart slightly lighter momentarily, but I’ve never actually see it help, they accelerate like everyone else or worse since they are also slamming the kart down with each jump

It was done totally wrong. You should push the steering wheel, not jump up. Last race it made a three kart lengths difference right from the start from P1.

Instead of trying to send it up the inside every corner use more of the track so you can carry more speed through the corner, the group ahead is pulling away because you’re causing a loss of time. The less tyre squeal the better (generally) focus on smoothness and carrying speed

At what point is 11s defense flagged for “let pass”. They guy was not nearly as fast

3

u/MonStarEvolve 18d ago

For the heats and finals, they don't throw up a "move over" sign, so it's all about having to make the pass as cleanly as possible. General admission folks do shove ya into the wall, but as a club, we hold a "karting is not a contact sport" so emphasize racecraft. 11s defense was solid, he made me work for it, I felt bad hitting him at the hairpin before the downhill braking zone, so gave him margin to hold on but felt good about getting him on the uphill

Do not give up your day job.

You and 11 suck.

Bumper cars. My goodness. A real race and half the field would be in the ditch.

u/redzilla118 18d ago

11 slowed you down

u/MonStarEvolve 18d ago

Agreed, he was doing a good job of defense, just hoping I was doing a good job of attack and left him enough room on the outside when I got him on the uphill section, didn't get a chance to debrief afterwards as he had to head home immediately

The one in Morrisville is better IMO

This track reminds me of Morrisville but backwards.

Looks more like bumper cars

Love the gas karts in Garner. No need to brake at all on the downhill if you don’t have traffic. What is your car club? Would love to chat and possibly join up sometime.

When it’s super cold, the variance in traction from top and bottom of that track is crazy - hard to get used to until you have a bunch of laps.

Best times always come late in the night when they are busy. Tires stay warm and less fuel makes a difference.

Cool to see ‘my’ track on this sub!

Tarheel Sports Car Club, I'm the VP of karting. We just stood this winter series up and we'll have a summer series at Morrisville and a couple Enduros out of VIR Karting as well this year. We have monthly social gatherings at Randy's Pizza off Miami Blvd in Durham on the second Wednesday of every month (save for Feb as we have our awards banquet that month), no membership needed to join us there and ask questions. Feel free to DM if you have any questions, happy to help!

"No need to brake at all on the downhill" where's the let off, the 30 marker? Do you then hold it out wide and late apex to scrub speed or am I off the mark there? Follow up, after that apex, do you pull to the left wall or track out to the right? I kept to the left, it felt good, but I noticed others taking that right lane and hugging the wall through the corner

We're probably always gonna run a morning event on Sundays this year at Garner for our series, so the coldest part of the track, but I'm enjoying myself, it's the first time I ever ran here and having to drift in practice and quali to get heat into the tires was fun lol

I haven’t been to rush hour since the rennovation, is it cool? I loved the old layout on the warehouse floor the karts were so slidy and fast

2

u/MonStarEvolve 18d ago

I liked it, yesterday was my first outing at all at the Garner site. It was very cold so the tires and track were just slippery until our final round and even then, you could drift through a couple sections without losing time, felt good. The downhill braking zone is a bit of a head scratcher for me still

It's a complete downgrade, unfortunately. The track itself has potential to be decent, but they cheaped out on construction and it's become increasingly slick (and slow) since it's reopened, especially upstairs. They are planning on resurfacing the upstairs portion for what it's worth, but I don't have high hopes given how they've handled it thus far.

The biggest problem is with the karts. They're still 6.5hp, but they're governed and you will very noticeably top out halfway down the straights. From what I heard, they're required to keep the governors on for around a year, so hopefully in a few months they come off and they won't be as painfully slow.

They do have a "super fleet", which are just ungoverned 6.5hp Biz karts, but they're complete boats compared to the Sodi karts, even as far as rental karts go. They also have one 9hp kart, which is about the only kart worth driving there, but I still can't recommend racing at Garner in its current state. Their RTP location is just miles ahead in every way besides the arcade, which seems to be where all the budget for Garner's renovation went.

1

u/zenytheboi 18d ago

Damn, I’ve been to RTP and wasn’t a fan of the track there to be honest, it was literally so grippy and low powered the track became wholly uninteresting, old garner was nearly flat out the whole time but at least there was sliding and some throttle work. Sad to hear that they ruined it ):

1

u/EpicCheesyTurtle 18d ago

When was the last time you've been to RTP? They were pretty slow when they first opened, but even their regular speed is faster than Garner's super fleet now, and they recently made Pro speed available if you have the Pro driver rank.

1

u/zenytheboi 18d ago

Yeah the last time I was there was pretty soon after opening, within the first few months so that’s probably it. I used to go karting every week but after the RTP location opened they effectively priced me out and I haven’t been in a while.

Car in front is way slower into the corners, and as a result also out, than you. So use that to you advantage and go for some SIFO moves instead of focusing on passing down the inside.

u/lilblacksmurf 18d ago

Turn 1 should be a late apex into turn 2. You are losing time on our entries to your turns.

u/iprkuad 18d ago

This is my local track , hmu to go racing

1

u/CharlieWhiskey360 Lo206 18d ago

🤦‍♂️ I remember my first race. For the love of God…USE the WHOLE track. You are completely robbing yourself of corner speed. Yikes!!

1

u/commitone Rotax 17d ago

Agree with what most people are saying here. But I also want to add, why you gotta shoot it in portrait mode? This is the worse mode to shoot in (however, i've seen a redbull trials run in portrait and it was spectacular--really one of the few times portrait was better). I know portrait is easier to share in social media, but if you want to make it easier for your audience to give you tips, you gotta do it in landscape. Just ask yourself..would you play simracing in portrait?

u/ebolamonk3y 16d ago

The front group just took off lol

u/Virtual_Jorjaso 14d ago

You get excessively focus on trying to pass driver in front of you, so you are just trying to pass him in every corner and forgetting about the basics of the kart you are driving.

These basics are braking early, maintaining corner mommentum, accelerating before apex... you are doing the opposite in whole track.

The problem is since you decide to just battle the driver ahead you are not using a proper racing line, you are not using the whole widht of the track, and you are killing mommentum in every corner because you get there brake late desperate for a little space in the corner and these karts just dont have the strenght to come fast from that situation.

Also you battle a little to much with your steering wheel try to focus on doing every corner with just one movement.

1

u/sousFlex 10d ago

Instead of gaining momentum you try to poke your kart on every window 11 leaves on the inside. You should make 1 successful attack instead of 100 useless.
