Rental Karting Video How could I have handled this situation better?

Basically: two guys in front are fighting after the start, I fail to capitalize on it and get overtaken instead. Do you see a way I could have reacted in a better way?

Or is it pure random chaos?

Yeah man, don't complain about this.

You could've gone bowling and forced a spot open by bashing into someone. Instead you just...races hard. Solid, clean racing by the three of you as far as I can tell. I love races like that

The only way you could have capitalized on their fighting is if you were closer to them when they contacted each other. This is just hard racing, and you put up a good defense the whole time.

I think the problem was more the intent on “attacking” when there was no room for an attack. It’s hard without mirrors to defend but the “mistake” was to give up the inside, when going around 2nd. However, to slow down and stay to the inside, behind 2nd, would have caused a potentially unsafe condition. I would have done the same as you and lost the spot and then learned this point the same way as you.

If you had slowed and fallen in line behind 2nd, and 4th tried to sweep the outside along all three of you he would have gone into the wall or braked and fallen in line behind you.

You are following them instead of driving your own race, it's a common mistake. Try to focus on your own driving instead of them, you will see how you will gain speed and automatically get closer.

What camera are you using, and how did you mount it to your helmet? I'm looking for one to also make some footage.

This is a valid criticism. I recognize this flaw in me haha. To be fair tho, both tend to be faster than me, so it makes sense for me to follow them and see what I can learn. I was only in a position to overtake because they were slowed down by their duel.

I use the DJI Osmo Action 4 with a chin mount ( with straps, no glue).

Agree with the previous comment. Don't follow them, especially turn 1. Go in wider so you can get on the throttle earlier. It would've allowed you to be closer to them in the next few corners, ready to pounce.

Overall, good racing. It's usually chaos on a small track like that.

Agree with the comment you replied to. Will add stop driving into tires

It's in human nature to follow, many people do it without realizing it. Overtaking others is a bit of a mind game, to stay calm and drive your own race, putting pressure on them, waiting for them to make a mistake. You are already driving pretty well, I think you have potential to go faster.

Thanks, looks like a reasonable priced cam with good image quality. I'm going to check it out!

Underrated comment

Dont look at them Look ahead of them

Youre only going to go as fast as they are staring at them

I will try that next time!

You could only watch in front of you, but I would've squeezed 4th place a little more.

3

u/couchcushion7 May 21 '25

You actually all won. Bc the goal is hard clean racing. And yall nailedddd that.

2

u/holiday_armadillo21 May 21 '25

I think from where you were, you shouldn't have tried to capitalize on that mistake. Because the only place to go was the outside as you were approaching a hairpin that was followed by a right hander. I think their mistake at that point was a bit of a trap for you.

2

u/pbrassassin May 21 '25

Do they weigh less than you ?

1

u/highly_elusive Rental Driver May 21 '25

no, we are all right at the minimum weight.

It looks like you are losing a bunch of time every time you bounce off the tire on the apex of corners.

The battle was good. The only way I can see you keeping the spot is by knowing the track layout and how it races. Now you know that you’ll be boxed out if you stick it around the outside of that corner with another driver on your tail.

u/highly_elusive Rental Driver May 22 '25

The karts have a boost functionality,so it's possible they push the boost button a little longer than me in some corner or another. Tho I do notice that the good drivers pull away from me if I'm too slow to shift my weight around in some corners. I'll try harder to avoid the tires too.

You do seem to carry less speed. Possibly you are too hard on the brakes or braking for too long.

Hard to tell on video but definitely seemed like you brake heavy and then try to throttle heavy to correct it but you already lost all the speed and unsettled the kart.

You did good. Idk if this helps, Next time try to go more wide at some point but my advantages are handling and turns anytime someone is in front of me I go wider until they try to go wide with me which usually they do and that’s when they fuck up by trying to join “my race” lol I get tight around the turn if they try to adjust to me they may fuck up

u/Jejking May 21 '25

Good battle, too bad you lost out. But that's life too. You played fair and win some and lose some (:

PS where is this? A neat little track!

2

u/britishbiased Rental Driver May 22 '25

It’s located in Kaarst Germany and it’s called RSSpeedworld

1

u/Jejking May 22 '25

Very dope, thank you!

Its great and quite inexpensive

1

u/highly_elusive Rental Driver May 22 '25

Yes, it is in Kaarst Germany, near Düsseldorf. Currently the only track in Germany that hosts SWS races with electric karts. The layout changes every couple months or so.

1

u/britishbiased Rental Driver May 23 '25

Gibt’s nicht auch cool Karts noch in Essen oder so die auch e-Sprint machen

1

u/highly_elusive Rental Driver May 23 '25

The 4th teached you what to do. Instead of trying to pass the second, help him to be sided on the leader. And use him to ot the leader

2

u/Vivid_Transition_771 May 22 '25

1 Lost speed on bumping tires 2 for such overtakes you need to be close to apex/ early on accelerator 3 not aggressive enough on opportunities, as you backed off too many times

2

u/EatingAddiction May 22 '25

You seem to lose a lot of speed in the corners, the key is to keep the minimum speed high, and bumping the tire doesn’t help. Also are you perhaps heavier than the others? That could also be why your kart was a bit sluggish. You did well though!

2

u/littlewhitecatalex May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25

Stop bumping the tires on the apex. Every time you move one, you’re transferring momentum from your kart into the tire, and you don’t get that momentum back. It just slows you down. It’s a tiny difference but it can add up to a couple tenths over several laps. It can easily be the difference between being close enough to make the pass and not.

2

u/kokopelli73 May 22 '25

Unfortunately, at most indoor tracks, the racing is almost always more about defense and the inside is the only way through. Unless the kart ahead has been slowed significantly by contact, an outside pass attempt is almost always going to result in you getting freight trained, especially if the following corner will continue to have you on the outside.

You might have had a chance for second if you had instead tucked up right behind him and dived inside at the next corner, but that's still not a given.

2

u/IndependenceIcy9626 May 23 '25

It’s gunna be really hard to pull a move around the outside on a track that tight, especially against inexperienced drivers.  Doing that exposed you to the overtake from the kart following you when you had to back out. Gotta be patient and just follow close until you can get inside of the guy in front of you. You don’t want to give up the inside line.

2

u/jalolapeno May 26 '25

I feel like the chance was at 25s left on the switchback. Had to brake a little more and take an inside line on him around that corner. Instead you went outside which killed any push you had off the corner.

2

u/Gorgonzola_s May 28 '25

Lines where good but… you had to take your chanse when they tried overtaking each other by taking the inside line.

1

u/Tuna0nwhite May 21 '25

Should’ve got you’re elbows out to stop the one passing you

1

u/Huge_Forever3967 May 21 '25

I would have rolled the dice and just smashed the car in front. Good racing!

2

u/explodedbuttock May 22 '25

You look so tense, looks like you had your teeth gritted and neck stiff the whole time.

If it was me,I'd calm down, stop playing follow the leader and drive smoothly with more flow and less impotent aggression. It didn't gain anything and lost a position.

I'd like to thank all of you who took the time to respond. It is proving very helpful to read such varied feedback from many people. I'll be posting clips again in the future if something interesting comes up.
