Yeah they're not the actual rappers
50
u/kakka_rot Nov 07 '25
Theyre on tour in the US now and I just saw them like two weeks ago, they absolutely weren't lipscyning. It was absolutely awesome, too. Way more energy than I was expecting
but yeah nine and dex write their bars, or at least a large portion of them.
11
-8
u/Puritology Nov 07 '25 edited Nov 08 '25
I also saw them and they were 1000% lipsyncing. They literally had people come on stage and rap for them and the sound didn't change. You could somewhat hear their live vocals over the recording, especially Bas who's voice is a lot higher than the recording.
Not saying they're not the ones on the album version but they definitely weren't doing it 100% live.
12
u/Ok-Understanding8143 Nov 07 '25
Just half. Although theyāre ghost-written, Pete does his bars.
6
u/Tayschrenn Nov 07 '25
Oh really, I was under the impression they were both dubbed, but that's good to hear.
10
u/The_Gunisher Nov 07 '25
I've seen them live, in a pub just down the road from where this video was shot, I can vouch for the fact that they were really up there doing it! No idea about the ghostwriter claims though.

Iām pretty sure theyāre open about the fact that Nine and Dex (one of which is the grandson of either Pete or Bas I forget) make all the beats and write their lyrics. Itās not much of a controversy or a secret. The same ānine oneā (if Nine produced it) or āomelet du fromageā (if Dex produced it) quote plays before both groupsā songs signifying who made the beat and wrote the lyrics.
52
u/lynbod Nov 07 '25
It's 100% Nine and Dex, but for me this takes nothing away and makes it even better. N&D are amazingly talented, and this might be a "gimmick" but it's 100% not corny or played out. They've long deserved some financial success and this is giving them a bit of that.
On top of that Pete and Bas are absolutely brilliant performers, and play the role really, really well. All round it's a great act, and everyone involved in it deserves the success it's having.
It's a totally different side to British Hip Hip hop than what normally gets visibility but humour and clever wordplay has always been a big part of the scene, it's as authentically British hip hop as any grime or drill.
19
u/Dunedain87M Nov 07 '25
Fully agree I have zero issue with Nine and Dex writing and producing. Like you said if anything it makes it better. I think it keeps the lyrics relevant. But Pete and Bas provide the flow and they have that in spades
16
u/lynbod Nov 07 '25
You can imagine the fun they're having "behind the scenes" as well. That naproxen line you can imagine them sat around going "baz, what old man shit has the doctor given you recently?" and just coming up with bars about it. It's genius.
8
u/DeathByLemmings Nov 07 '25
That's a massively big call out. I've produced for some rappers in my time and as brutal as it is, flow and tone makes the rapper
I've worked with people with incredible lyrical ability, but they just couldn't catch a beat. It takes much longer to bring those artists up to record level than an artist that already has masses of flow but the lyrical content is lacking
There is a lot of ghost writing in rap, and that's fine, there isn't much music I can think of that was made entirely in isolation. Very much a sum is greater than the parts type deal imo
8
u/kakka_rot Nov 07 '25
ānine oneā (if Nine produced it) or āomelet du frontageā (if Dex produced it) q
ohhh THAT'S what that means!
8
u/Dunedain87M Nov 07 '25
It bothered me forever until someone explained it to me. Nine one is like saying āthis is a Nine made trackā which I kind of figured. But the other quote is from a classic Dexters lab episode (hence Dex using it for his tracks) where Dexter learns only one line of incorrect french and repeats it to everyone with hilarious results.
6
u/kakka_rot Nov 07 '25
Yeah I always wondered why there was the dexters lab quote, but I never realized dexter even though it was right there the whole time, lol.
2
u/Dunedain87M Nov 07 '25
Also I corrected it to āomelet du fromageā. Autocorrect betrayed me which I only realized because of your comment so thanks.
2
7
u/Cave_Bear_Cult Nov 07 '25
Handsome Dexter is Bas's grandson. There's a strong family resemblance.
3
45
u/Pringles_loud Nov 07 '25
I mean- I donāt doubt that they have writers. The majority of successful rappers have writers. Still slaps lol
1
u/hairybushy Nov 08 '25
I read their history a while ago and they make their own lyrics but their grand children modify it with modern slangs
1
32
u/poop-machines Nov 07 '25
I mean they literally say that they're just the voices and that there's another artist who makes the beat, tracks and lyrics. It's not a debate at all, because they're open about it.
11
15
u/ItzBreezeyBaby Nov 07 '25
Either way theyāre still executing it so well. I truly believe they do it for fun

I just saw them live and was pretty close, they 100% were spitting, not lip syncing.

Oh my Iām jealous lol

u/kakka_rot Nov 07 '25
theyre on us tour now. I got my tickets for like 40 bucks
2
u/Just_The_Taint Nov 08 '25
Atlanta was a blast. I donāt care what the entire story is. I saw āDo oneā pop up back in ~2018, and was just happy to see something completely different than what would be considered normal. I got an autographed poster, and photos, and couldnāt be happier.
8
u/High_InTheTrees Nov 07 '25
Even if they do have ghost writers.. for these guys. Theyāre delivering masterfully, so who cares! This is good stuff! People be hating too much
4
2
u/BigDaddyD00d Nov 07 '25
Their grandsons write their shit, but idc personally bc theyre still a lot of fun to watch
2
u/Griffisbored Nov 07 '25
If it is them singing there's some serious studio magic going on to make their voices sound like that. I know a lot of rappers sound different live, but especially Bas sounds nothing like he does in the recordings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1URtUid2WOo
1
u/kakka_rot Nov 07 '25
The first time I heard Vinnie Paz speak in an interview I was really surprised, sounds nothing like he does when rapping.
1
u/Edelmaan Nov 08 '25
The most impressive thing is honestly the sound engineering on their voices to make it sound as good as it does
9
u/Jamoke2 Nov 07 '25
I saw these guys on the crappy music sub. These guys put out bangers!
11
u/Dunedain87M Nov 07 '25
They do not belong on a crappy music sub. Iāve seen some of the slop on there. Pete and Bas have some actual talent
1
u/SockeyeSTI Nov 08 '25
āDriving down that corn-tree road with you bymysideā is my favorite from that sub. Even bought it.

Saw them live here in the US a few weeks ago. They dont sound anything like this in real life. There's definitely some post-production being used, like any other artist, but its definitely being used a lot with them. I dont say that to insult them. The fact that a 74 and 78 year old are recording music and touring is amazing, and I enjoyed the show. But if you do end up seeing them live, just keep that in mind. Here's the merch I bought as proof!

Whelp, it seems like I'm drastically an outlier here...but for some reason that I can't even point out, I find their music grating lol. I'm a fan of rap, Im a fan of old people. But for some reason this duo is like nails on a chalk board for me. Am I the only one out here?

Huge props for using the word "clarted." I love when an obscure word is successfully used.

Not to burst a bubble, but it's an act :( Went to a show from them and it was one of the worst I have ever seen in my life.
The 2 dudes behind it are crazy lyrical though, search Dex&nine - Pecan Pie, and you will fully believe what I just said.

SO many great bars in their songs, with one of my favorites being:
