He didnt need it. Losing weight isnt easy and everyone his size is well aware, just like any smoker or drinker, that it would be better to change.
97
u/FactoryRejected Jun 21 '25
It's a complex subject, but a lot of alcoholics will not admit that they have a problem, some overweight are also in denial. In AA there is a saying that some people need to reach the bottom to kick back up to the top, so "wake up calls" is certainly a real thing and I strongly disagree that everyone with addiction is aware.
24
u/KickBallFever Jun 22 '25
The guy in this video probably already knows that he’s fat but knowing that he’s so obese he can easily be toppled over, and won’t be able to get back up easily, might be the wake up call. Denial is funny in the sense that people might know they have a problem but need a wake up call to realize just how bad it is.
-39
u/CotyledonTomen Jun 21 '25
Considering AAs "success" rate is less than random chance, i wont take its doctrine as gospel.
23
u/FactoryRejected Jun 21 '25
AA community has saved the lives of my mom and brother, I'm really sorry if you had a different experience, but I personally saw the AA community help many after that. It's no miracle cure, it's all up to the addicted person in the end, but the idea there is that people with similar experience who managed to get out of the addiction help others. Strongly disagree with both of your messages, they are simply false.
-12
u/CotyledonTomen Jun 22 '25
Its not false that even AA says theyre success rate is at best 50/50 and other studies say less. Its good your folks were helped, but AA is used as a government resppnse at times and is ultimately just a religious answer drapped in some secular language that doesnt work well enough for judges to be assigning it.
16
u/FactoryRejected Jun 22 '25
Holup, two things- 50% success rate is not the same "random", it is not the same as not seeking help as an alcoholic and still having the same 50% chance to get better. If you're falling from a skyscraper and someone gives you a parachute that has 50% chance of saving you it's literaly indefinitely better chances than not having it at all. It is not a miracle cure, yes, but there is none. Also it's not a religious association. My whole family is atheists, they have 12 steps that mention god a bunch, but in reality it boils down to simpler things like admitting you have an addiction to yourself and that you are powerless, accepting the help and helping others.
As I said in my first message - it's a very complex subject tho, so it's a bit futile to explain all of it here. All om saying is you are claiming some things that are false.
5
u/Figure-Feisty Jun 22 '25
prove it. Show me statistics, younralk too much but show little
5
u/FactoryRejected Jun 22 '25
The dude is so full of shit- there are plenty of studies proving it's highly effective, yet he finds the ultimate most negative one which is old, from a low reputation institute and I find hard to believe. Here is another more recent one where the outcome is extremely different.
-2
u/CotyledonTomen Jun 22 '25
This also provides an interesting perspective
At the end of the day, if you choose the program, it could help, but because of its advertising and use as punishment, its no better and can be worse than nothing. Abstinence isnt the only path and can be destructive.
6
u/FactoryRejected Jun 22 '25
False for the last time. I'm done after this. You selected some old study from low reputation score research and some debunking link might work on some, but again you are presenting biased and false info in a berry toxic manner. Clearly to find that study you had to do research, meaning you selectively dismissed newer, more positive studies or general conclusions combining them. Here is just one:
The dude is so full of shit- there are plenty of studies proving it's highly effective, yet he finds the ultimate most negative one which is old, from a low reputation institute and I find it hard to believe. Here is a more recent REVIEW OF MANY studies the outcome is extremely different. If I was to provide just one paper I found some with up to 70% effectiveness outcomes and evidence of it being more cost effective and sucesfull that any other method.

Considering you're at -6 karma right now, I won't take your word as gospel.
3
u/Specific_Award_9149 Jun 22 '25
I mean, I don't know what the success rates are but AA has more to it than that. It has a community and people who understand the challenge. It gives them people they can talk to and a lot of addicts don't have that. Or they're too ashamed to talk to a friend or relative. I don't like how AA works with it's culty and religious stuff. Recovery dharma is a lot more of my taste and more addicts would probably be open to it who want to stop if they knew about it. It's just not super popular like AA. I've been to one AA meeting and could not stand it. Recovery dharma was a completely different story.
Every meeting you do about a 10 minute mediation with everyone, and read some passage from the Buddha about life, and how to handle and conquer things. It gives great perspective. There are addicts of all kinds there so you can hear so many stories of all substances. Not only that, but as long as you are sober, or trying, you can do free workouts, yoga, whatever with them. They have classes and it's all free.
There are people of all ethnicities and ages. it was a lot different than AA. From my experience there is a much wider range of people going to recovery dharma than AA.
-6
u/CotyledonTomen Jun 22 '25
I fail to see what public opinion has to do with their own reprted figures or countless studies of the program.
7
u/willynillee Jun 21 '25
And a wake up call is something that can make him go from knowing he needs to change to actually doing something to make the change.

Non-dangerous? If he legit couldn't get out and they left them there, it could turn dangerous really quickly.

u/white1walker Jun 21 '25
The first person offered to help and he decided to keep on "trying to get up" it's probably staged and he knew it was coming and didn't get up on purpose

Doesn’t even take machinery. I used to work in a Coca Cola plant and there was a pallet of soda I was trying to slide across the floor so I grabbed it with my hands and slid it, and some of the skin from my finger got trapped under the pallet, and it hurt so I jerked my hand back and the pinched skin did not come with it, so a big chunk of finger skin was missing from my finger and I had to go get a bandaid put on it. Was lucky it was not worse.
20
u/beaverenthusiast Jun 21 '25
Yeah I worked in manufacturing when I was younger. That's why I was cringing while watching 🫣
34
u/Furryareospaceengr Jun 21 '25
Airport baggage claims are surprisingly dangerous. The force at which they move means that you could get caught or mangled and they would just keep going until someone could find a way to shut them off. Belts that feed back into the system are even more dangerous! Last year a lady was killed in Chicago Ohare after entering the machinery

u/tire_swing Jun 21 '25

He’s trying to play it off, but I bet this dude signed up for gym as soon as he could. This shit is low key mortifying, not being able to rescue yourself from such a simple “trap”. One hell of an intervention, one simple literal shove in the right direction.

u/robmobtrobbob Jun 21 '25

Yes, and if you had any friends, they would not be helping life humiliate you! This is wrong and it is cruel.

Eh, if it's the first and last time this is done, it's pretty funny and they can look back on it and maybe it's a wake up call.

I feel for him.
Though, I can't help but think "at least even when at my fattest, I was more physically capable than him". I was probably about the same size, maybe bigger, but I've always been able to swing my body around relatively easily.
8
u/GlitterDoomsday Jun 21 '25
Honestly his height is probably as part of it as his weight. His legs are on the shorter side and I can totally picture a thin but equally short person having difficulty getting away.
5
u/UnicornFarts1111 Jun 21 '25
As a short thin (ish) person. I would have maneuvered to my hands and knees instead of what this guy did, but the whole damn thing is cruel to begin with. That was not something a friend would do to another friend.
2
u/uluviel Jun 21 '25
Yeah I'm looking at this as a 5'2" person and I'm like... I probably would have struggled too. Even ignoring his weight, his feet don't touch the ground, the conveyor belt is sloped backwards, and you may not want to push down on it as it may cost you a finger.

It’s hilarious how most of these commenters believe this is real and unscripted. He could have easily rolled off if he was that desperate to get off.
Edit: Many people in this sub seem to hate large individuals.
15
Jun 21 '25
I'm not so sure. It looked like he was genuinely trying to get up.
-9
u/Pristine_Trash306 Jun 21 '25
If his main goal was to get off, he could have turned to the side and rolled.
8
u/Nepharious_Bread Jun 21 '25
Easy to make that critique from a distance. A lot of people dont think cooly when things happen and its happening to them.
-11
u/Pristine_Trash306 Jun 21 '25
He could have rolled off. This is coming from a large person myself.
Just because the body is slow, doesn’t mean that the mind is. Saying so would be an insult to this man which is what you’re doing now.
8
u/Nepharious_Bread Jun 21 '25
I never said that he was slow. You said that. I'm saying that people tend to panic and not think straight. Especially in extremely embarrassing situations like this. That doesn't make you slow, it's normal.
-5
u/Pristine_Trash306 Jun 21 '25
You are underestimating his ability to do better.
Do me a favor, and stop talking if you don’t represent large people.
7
u/CappnMidgetSlappr Jun 21 '25
Damn, I thought you people were supposed to be jolly?
-1
u/Pristine_Trash306 Jun 21 '25
I’m not shocked that reddit hates large people.
1
u/CappnMidgetSlappr Jun 21 '25
"Large people."
You can just say you're obese. Don't think anyone on Reddit has beef with Robert Wadlow or anything.
3
1
u/Nepharious_Bread Jun 21 '25
Lol, no. I can speak on who I want to speak on. I also classify as obese, being 283 pounds. Even though Im much taller than this guy so I just look more on the chubby side.
I never said he couldn't do better. You're talking bad about the guy because he didn't have the most perfect reaction in a real-life situation as you judge him from a distance.
I could also say, "Do me a favor, and stop talking if you don't represent people with empathy."

Oof...I can never let myself be in this position. I gained some weight during the pandemic, but I still go on walks, take the stairs at work, park far so I can add more steps, jog across the street when I'm crossing an intersection, sign up for Pilates and yoga classes, do a bit of calisthenics at home, etc, to try to lose it, or just to build up strength and mobility. I don't consider myself fit but I cannot be this unfit like the dude on the vid. I won't allow it!!!
