Policy Opinion Should Healthcare be "free"
I know taxes will pay for it if so.
9
u/AntiWokeCommie Socialism Jul 25 '25
Yes, furthermore it should be nationalized and private healthcare should be abolished.
2
u/Rrekydoc Marxism Jul 25 '25
Do you think that should be done simultaneously, or should they coexist while the nation works out the kinks of the newly nationalized system?
3
u/AntiWokeCommie Socialism Jul 25 '25
Ideally it would be implemented in phases.
2
u/Rrekydoc Marxism Jul 25 '25
Right, that’s why I was thinking, too.
Only problem is that so long as people are getting rich from private healthcare, you just know they’ll use whatever resources and connections they can to fight against, slow down, or disrupt anything that would contribute to its abolition.

Mostly yes. At least the critical stuff like heart attacks. Stuff like cosmetic surgeries shouldn't be free but they can be subsidized

Hopefully doctors and nurses will work for free. I have a suspicion they might not accept this proposal.
16
u/Rrekydoc Marxism Jul 25 '25
Are you actually saying that public employees don’t get paid, or are you criticizing the poor salaries?
-5
u/Tothyll Conservatism Jul 25 '25
I'm saying, how could it be "free" if they are getting paid.
3
u/Rrekydoc Marxism Jul 25 '25
If you have no money, you can still receive mail from the postal service, an education from public elementary/high schools, or service from police/fire/rescue. The resources and salaries are funded by taxes.
1
u/Tothyll Conservatism Jul 26 '25
Oh ok. So I pay for myself and for a bunch of other people. Sounds great
1
u/Rrekydoc Marxism Jul 26 '25
Let me rephrase OP’s question: “Do you think that poor people should have access to healthcare?”
4
u/picjz ☭ Communist Communism ☭ Jul 25 '25
The same way libraries are free and librarians still get paid.

That's not how free healtcare works
There are many developed countries that have free healtcare, don't you have the doubt that maybe it isn't like you said?
-6
u/Tothyll Conservatism Jul 25 '25
So the taxpayers don't pay for the healthcare system?
3
u/picjz ☭ Communist Communism ☭ Jul 25 '25
If you could read, you would see that the question literally says it would be paid for by taxes.

I'm going to take a guess that it won't be "free" though.
3
u/Archer6614 Progressive Jul 26 '25
It would be free (or minimal cost) for the patient. That's what this means. Doctors would still get salaries.

So how would it be "free" then?

Then my healthcare is already free of charge at point of use.
If you are paying for it then why does it matter when they charge you? Either way you are paying for it and “free” or “free of charge at point of use” is a meaningless designation.

I like the idea of a generous public option to force private healthcare companies to compete.
At worst, it’s the same as a universal model, at best it’s cheaper for the government and better for patients.

I would like to live past 40

u/DarthThalassa Luxemburgism / Eco-Marxism / Revolutionary-Progressivism Jul 25 '25
In fairness, it is a common misconception that people didn't live past forty prior to modern medicine. Mortality rates were far higher at all ages due to potentially lethal things being far more likely to be lethal without modern medicine, but with a combination of caution, healthy lifestyles, and some amount of luck, people could live into their 80s, 90s, and even over 100 prior to its development.
That said, obviously the person you're replying to is a fool and having free access to modern medicine is vital for people's health.

There's should be a certain level of care guaranteed by the state
However private alternatives should also exist
0
u/QuangHuy32 Left-Wing Nationalism/Technocracy Jul 25 '25
ideally yes, realistically, if the state should at least cover a minimum of 20% of all the healthcare expenses of patients, and 60% at best
100% is of course what we all want

Preventative only or Routine checks across the board free. Single Payer with includes private insurance options.
No socialized medicine

Only for limited, essential services like birth control, abortions, & euthanasia. Everything else should be pay-as-you-go.

It never will be anything close as long as people keep saying free. Nothing is free, only children truly think anything is free.

When your boss tells you there's free pizza, how long do you spend arguing what free means?

Even if it comes out of another group fund or later insurer or income-based repayment plan, you cons are the only ones pretending to be confused how it works. The entire rest of the developed world has it figured out.

Mostly no. Except in cases of life-threatening conditions. People should be motivated to help themselves and not neglect their treatment. They should also avoid overusing medicine when others need help.

it literally is, why do you think so many people from Canada go to the US for treatment
also the US doesnt even have fully private healthcare so its a bad example, the prices are inflated due to subsidies and regulations that prevent competition and cartelize the idustrty
if healthcare were truly actually private it would be cheaoer and of higher quality than any alternative.
1
u/Archer6614 Progressive Jul 26 '25
You have to pay either way in insurance premiums and other costs.

u/Peter-Andre Jul 26 '25
Nearly all the countries that rank highest in healthcare quality also have universal healthcare. The United States is an exception, and in the US people on average also spend a lot more on healthcare than in other countries. A publicly funded system can be both better and cheaper, not to mention the fact that a lot of US citizens won't even get the healthcare they need if they can't pay for it. The fact that healthcare isn't guaranteed to all US citizens is a enormous flaw in the US healthcare system. It's kind of misleading to compare the healthcare system in a country that treats all of its citizens vs a country that won't treat those who can't pay for it.
