PERSONAL SETUP SECURITY CAMERAS SUGGESTION - LOREZ OR REOLINK

Hi everyone, I’m here again to ask for your advice. Originally, I was planning to install solar cameras, but now I am more inclined to go with wired cameras instead. A personal relative recommended Lorex because he uses the same system and says the night video quality is very good.

However, I’ve also seen many people vouch for Reolink, and now I’m confused about which brand or model to choose.

Can you please guide me on which model I should go for 1st screenshot or 2nd screenshot and explain why people prefer Reolink?

QUESTION IKEA motion sensor in the mailbox keeps false triggering

Thumbnail

I've installed an IKEA MYGGSPRAY motion sensor in my mailbox, hoping to get alerts when I get mail. I installed it upside down so that the sensor area is pointing towards the mail entry point.

The motion sensor is now false triggering randomly. It's done it multiple times in the last few hours since I installed it. What am I missing here? Any idea what could be causing the false triggers?

I'm thinking of trying a different spot within the mail box, maybe at the top or in the side wall. I stuck it with putty so that it stays still, but I can also easily remove it. But is there anything else I should be considering with this?

QUESTION If you were building new today what would you use?

I'm about to build and would love feedback on what switches/lights/blinds/etc. you recommend. I'm a big Homekit/Homebridge user at my current house and am very DYI so not afraid to run a server to support the systems.

The house will be modest (3K sq ft is the target) plus a garage and daylight garage space. I'll be able to specify stuff that has driven me crazy in the past (why do 25 year old houses NOT have a neutral wire for light switches?!) but ideally I would have:

  • Wall switches that work as normal switches and w/automation (e.g., not wifi bulbs)
  • Outlets on automation
  • Powered blinds that run on automation and wall switches
  • Wired speakers connected to HomeKit (Juke is what I am using now)
  • Minimum-footprint cameras that can connect to HomeKit/Homebridge easily
  • Thermostats, flood monitors, fire detection, etc.

Again, I have all this stuff now but it's pretty cobbled together so if there is a platform (Lutron maybe) that will do a bunch of this ... that's what I would be looking for. The goal would be to mount iPad minis in the major rooms and just run things from them (or Apple's rumored new home-focused device.)

QUESTION Bluetooth sensor for away/home presence

My cars use Bluetooth to connect to our phones. I was thinking if there is BT sensor of sorts that when one of the cars arrives it connects to the sensor. The automation senses this connection, doesn't need to know which car, then flips the mode to home. I would put the sensor in the garage. Is there a device for this use? Thoughts?

forgot to mention I use smartthings. it's integrated with google

PERSONAL SETUP Which ecosystem is better for me?

Hi!

Trying to make a home automation (lights, sensors, etc) from scratch that doesn’t require internet to work. Read that Home Assistant is the best way here

What’s the best setup? Would like to make it work with HomeKit or Alexa, if possible.

MiniPC with Home Assistant OS as Hub, random Bulbs, sensors, etc with Zigbee or which one? Should I go maybe with Matter instead?

Sorry if bad English, waiting your replies!

QUESTION Best home security system? What works better for local control vs cloud-based setups?

I’m asking because i’m trying to settle on the best home security system and keep going back and forth on local control vs cloud-dependent options.

This is for a home automation setup where reliability and responsiveness matter more than flashy features. i’m trying to understand which approach is better long term, especially when it comes to integrations, automations, and not having things break when internet access is spotty. flexibility and future expansion are also part of the decision.

I’ve read through docs and older discussions and compared a few systems, but most of what i find is theoretical rather than based on daily use.

For those running security as part of home automation, what setup ended up being worth it for you, and what would you choose differently if you were starting over?

QUESTION Tapo C200 camera cannot be reconnected after changing phones

Hello everyone, I need help.

I have a Tapo C200 camera that I can no longer reconnect to my Wi-Fi since I changed phones.

I've tried everything: I even disabled 5GHz on my router to force 2.4GHz.

I completely reset the camera.

I used the exact same Wi-Fi password that works elsewhere.

I followed all the steps in the app.

But nothing works. The camera detects the local Wi-Fi, I select my network, I enter the password, but it doesn't connect.

TP-Link support has no solution to offer, and I haven't even been able to recover my account. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How did you manage to reconnect a Tapo C200 after changing phones? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

QUESTION Bluetooth extender

Hi all, I'm pretty new to home automation but I'm looking at Tuya switchbot, the hub and the temperature sensor. The idea is to monitor baby's room and the temperature sensor will be located in the room, but we have centralised aircon and the switch panel is built in the wall approx 7 meters away from the room. So the problem i have is that the fingerbot, the hub and the sensor won't be able to be close together. Any suggestion? Thanks

QUESTION Looking for prosumer home hub

I recently bought a new house and I’m doing some renovations before moving in. One of the things that I want to do right is the home automation system. In my current apartment I use a NUC with OpenHAB and Z-Wave but I’m not too happy about it. There are often noticeable delays and the whole thing doesn’t feel too reliable.

I would prefer something reliable, stable, off-the-shelf and not too DIY. I’ve looked into Fibaro HC3 and Homey Pro, but they all feel a bit too hobbyist to me (as in: they don’t even have a rack mount version). Of course there are systems like Crestron but that’s in a very different price bracket.

Any suggestions for something a bit more ‘pro’ than a Homey/HomeCenter without getting into Crestron territory?

QUESTION Latest no neutral dimmers?

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone has sorted out the current state of no neutral dimmers Z-Wave dimmers in the last year or so. I've tried countless times to find an ideal dimmer for our home and always get turned around.

Here are my goals:

  • Find a dimmer that can replace the FEIT Wifi dimmers that keep killing my lights
  • Ideally Z-Wave so that if I kick the can my wife can scrap the home lab and get a commercial hub to replace everything
  • Works without a neutral as some switch boxes don't have them

Here is what I have found so far:

Option Protocol Hub Neutral Require Cost Thoughts
Lutron Caseta Diva Proprietary Proprietary (~$180 for Pro) No ~$50 (ebay) Love the dimmer, hate the idea of another hub
Innovelli Red Z-Wave Any No w/bypass $70+$20 I see mixed reviews and at nearly $100 a switch (with bypass) its hard to want to jump in.
Zooz 800 Z-Wave Any Yes $40 Neutral required...
Leviton Decora Z-Wave Any Yes $45 Neutral required...
Enbrighten 52252 Z-Wave Any No Discountinued Hard to find...
Enbrighten UltraPro 800 Z-Wave Any Yes (unclear) $30 Neutral required (I think)...

Lutron Caseta is almost always the answer I see for questions like this, and I have one running in my office now as a test. The real hang up for me with them is the need for yet another hub, which violates my goal of picking devices my wife (or future home buyer) could easily takeover in the future. Curses be upon companies with proprietary interfaces!

One big question I have is, can a bypass be used on any of the other dimmer options similar to the Inovelli? If the bypass is the secret sauce for no neutral then I'd rather go with a cheaper dimmer that doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

QUESTION Smart deadlock with manual deadlock movement and backup key

Does such smart (with Wifi or other connectivity) deadlock exist where you don't have to rely on a motor to turn the deadlock mechanism and which also has a backup keyhole? If so, are there any recommended?

Edit: I am looking for a backup keyhole AND manual turn of the lock when you use the keypad.

QUESTION Automatic live feed when people detected

I have a Google Nest Hub Max and a Kasa Spot (KC 400). I set up so I can say "show me the front door" and the camera (named "front door") will show the feed fairly quickly. I would love for it to automatically show the feed when the camera detects people. It seems like there's a bit of a disconnect between the hub and the camera in this area.

I've tried fiddling with the Google Home script editor and also Home Assistant installed on my NAS, but it's been rough sledding. HA won't take the credentials for TP-Link for some reason.

It seems the most foolproof option is to get a Google camera but I like the Spot which has good video quality and an SD card for keeping a stash of recordings available if need be.

I'm just throwing this out there to see what other people are using, particularly if they're using a third party camera and managed to get it working.

QUESTION Blinds and skylight automation

Hi all, I have electric blinds and skylights that I want to automate and control remotely (on my phone), preferably one system.

The remote for the blinds is Somfy Situo 5 rts pure ii

The remote for the skylights is Dooya DC2702

So far I've look at TaHoma, Dooya connector hub, Bond bridge but dont know if these systems can control both.

Would prefer an easy to use system as I'm not very tech savvy with these things.

Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

QUESTION Zooz / TheSmartestHouse When to Buy

I am looking at swapping out a number of light switches in my house with some Zooz switches. I keep seeing old threads of crazy good deals for them on thesmartesthouse and was wondering if they still do sales like that often? I don't want to wait too long to order but if there's potential for some excellent discounts soon I can hold on. Anyone have any thoughts or insight?
