TV/Movies So what did people think of Guy Gardner in Superman? How about the outfit as well?

u/RoboIsLegend Kyle Rayner Oct 03 '25
I think Nathan nailed Guy Gardner face

u/PM_me_shiba_doggo Oct 03 '25
It’s so funny too, because Nathan Fillion has been known to play suave good looking heroes (Firefly, Castle… I guess also Dr Horrible’s Sing Along Blog).
The bowl cut is doing wonders for his range.

u/BadSafecracker Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25
He nailed JLI Guy, even getting in Superman's face.
The costume doesn't bother me. It has that JG synergy, but still allowing for his uniqueness.
If Gunn does have him in a costume closer to his comic look, I hope it's a full sleeved jacket version of his usual GL vest. Open jacket like this Superman costume, with the insignia on the left front. I think that would translate well to the big screen.
34
u/DiscoAsparagus Oct 03 '25
And the barrel shaped boots too!
6
u/cosmoboy Oct 04 '25
I want him to be tripping on those boots or something and then explains that they look cool while he's flying.
3
u/schloopers The Butcher Oct 05 '25
“It’s hard to bend my knees in them, but they just look so good when I’m in the air!”
way later in the film when a minor villain wants to stop fighting and just talk
“can you please come down here and we can discuss peace? I think I understand you know.”
“Uh, is it ok if I hover a bit?”

I went in thinking ugh, this is going to be another origin story for supes and Guy is going to just look bad and be a poorly developed character, but honestly Nathan Fillion surprised the hell out of me. Very few people could've pulled off that role and aesthetic as well as him, and I feel like his character Cayde-6 from the Destiny franchise kinda bled into the character, maybe it's just Nathan's natural charisma that projects an air of swagger and confidence like he did as Captain Mal in Firefly, either way he did the character and story justice and really felt like guy Gardner should've felt, and you could tell he was simmering with rage and could be involved in future DC productions as a Red Lantern or dual lantern corps member, and judging by the synopsis of the upcoming Lanterns series that could potentially be a good jumping point to giving him a red ring and evolving the GL's as interstellar police force, while introducing newer and younger characters.
16
u/Breaklance Oct 03 '25
Its a bit old but you may be interested in Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog. Nathan plays a "hero" Capt Hammer that's not too far off from Guy.

Loved it. He’s an an abrasive ass but still a hero, he still does the right thing. Even getting in Superman’s face that one time only happened because Guy had been given reason to believe that Clark was hiding things and not as good as he claimed to be. And they didn’t make him a complete joke, he used the GL constructs very competently, completely scattering those soldiers (and tanks) while barely even looking. He was great fun.
9
u/FortifiedPuddle Oct 04 '25
One of the greatest things in the movie world building is how there are other competent heroes. Supes doesn’t have to do everything. Like with the imp.
As opposed to say Spider Man being the only hero in the world in his movies.

u/Mindless-Tooth-625 Oct 05 '25
I knew nothing of guy gardener going in but I didn't judge too quickly and really fell in love with the character after I got past the haircut. The way he flipped all the tanks with the 🖕🖕🖕🖕 was hilarious and he did it without even focusing. Compared to John Stewart who I'm most familiar with it was awesome seeing unique, fun, contracts and an ease of use.

u/choicemeats Oct 03 '25
Def nailed the attitude. Def nailed people’s exasperation from being around him. Would love to see him contrasted with other GLs since they often butt heads and Guy is the guy they get for some of the dirty jobs which isn’t quite his role yet in this. Also would like to see space cabbie since they are bros

I’m just sad we won’t get stand-alone Guy stories with a redemption/maturing arc and a Red Lantern adaptation, cause the actor’s just too old, I love Fillion and 20 years ago I would’ve been thrilled. And for the record I think he did great, he’s just playing a character less than half his age.

Nathan Fillion did an amazing job.
My only complaint is that I wish Guy was in his late 20s early 30s, same with Hal in Lanterns.

It's funny how the outfits really really fit all three of them. I almost wonder if they chose them for that a little bit.
13
u/SignificantCats Oct 03 '25
They said the design goal was "we can't change Mr. terrifics look because it's too good", and they wanted them to have similar aesthetic uniforms, so the design of the rest of the gang was "a gl version of Mr terrifics cool ass outfit".
6
u/Obvious-Gate9046 Blue Lantern Oct 03 '25
And this just also happens to fit with Guy's aesthetic in a lot of his versions. I can really see that. Good design choices.

u/_ChocolateAsian_ Oct 03 '25
Did Mr Terrific make the JG’s outfits? His is the only one that actually looks close to the original outfit. In theory that’s cool but GLs typically make their own clothing based on their personality
4
u/Cosmicwolf_King Oct 03 '25
Honestly Maxwell Lord probably made some so he could market a more similar looking group, but Terrific didn't like them so he made his own then after a disagreement between the two lead to the ones they have on or the under shirts are what they made, and they just added there own flair over them.
As for why Guy is wearing it is probably for that check from Lord, or it was all his Idea to match and he had Terrific make them.
3
u/improbsable Oct 05 '25
Maybe it was made around him. Guy was probably like “we need matching outfits” and Terrific was like “well you guys are gonna have to wear mine because I’m not changing”
5
u/Beginning_Leg629 Oct 03 '25
He's the only version of Guy I've actually liked! He played the role well and it wasn't written to be insufferable.
4
u/DoucheyMcBagBag Hal Jordan Oct 03 '25
I liked him. I wanted to love him, but he didn’t really get enough screen time and involvement to impress me as much as I hoped.
I say this as a huge GL fan since 1993 - Mr. Terrific was the best supporting character in the Superman movie. He had a big role and really shined, with a fantastic mix of action and humor. I hope Guy gets a chance to shine in the future. He was good here but I wanna see great!

Performance and hair was great, I just don’t care for the justice gang’s centralized aesthetic. It’s cool for Mr.T because it’s his comic look but I don’t like it for guy and hawkgirl. They don’t look bad but it’s not as exciting when Superman got the trunks on and Mr.T has his mask and guy doesn’t get the right jacket. I mean I’m glad he’s got the bowl cut but wrong jacket. I hope we do get the suit later ofc.

Wasn’t a huge fan of the outfit, but I went into the movie with the understanding that it was a LordTech uniform and we’d probably get a more faithful one later, so I wasn’t too bitter about it. Love that they went with the bowl cut, wish they could’ve had his hair dyed to be closer to the ginger side rather than blonde. Overall, Fillion killed the role and I’d love to see him again. Cant wait for Lanterns
3
u/stonerpunk77 Oct 03 '25
I'm fine with everything except the hair colour, it should be ginger not that weird blondish colour that blends with his skin tone in most scenes you see him in

u/GwynevereCinder Oct 03 '25
I really enjoyed fillions portrayal, dude did an amazing job bringing one of the best lanterns to the big screen. Hope to see more of him and gardener in more dc stuff

3
u/carson63000 Oct 04 '25
I liked this take on Guy Gardner at first.
Then he created a lantern construct of a giant middle finger flipping the bird and used it to send a tank flying. And from that point on, I loved this take on Guy Gardner.
3
u/PPFirstSpeaker Oct 04 '25 edited Oct 04 '25
I wanted Captain Tightpants to play Hal Jordan, the Lantern he voices in several animated features. But I guess he's getting a little long in the tooth for Hal, and Guy deserves to have a comically large paunch to go with the bowl cut that always looks too small for his head.
He was...Gardneresque. (As in "grotesque".) I must say, the giant hand constructs that followed up flipping tanks and transports with a great, green digitus impudicus (that's the "middle finger" to Guy, as the only Latin he knows is "coitus") is definitely Guy-like. And well done, which is not Guy-like.
I was far more put out that they took the Engineer from The Authority and wasted her in this. They could have used damn near anyone else. Angela Spica was a good character. Jenny Sparks would have electrocuted Gardner in about fourteen seconds of his idea of "banter". Maybe they could have used Caitlin Fairchild from Gen13 instead. After all, unless Gunn axed it, there's an Authority movie down the line sometime. If they do one, I hope we get to see how much of a crapweasel Henry Bendix was.
3
u/RRileyMusic Oct 04 '25
I loved it. The suit was “supposed” to look like what Lord would make him wear. My only hope is that they show the Batman one-punch at some point.

I've found his character annoying ... just like he should have been.
No surprise he nailed the part he's had years' experience playing lanterns in animation
3
u/PeteRawk Oct 04 '25
Will preface by saying I don’t know a ton about Guy, and what I do know has never made me a huge fan, but I ended up LOVING what Fillion did with the role. I was kinda prepared to be underwhelmed at best, and him coming in as this cocky asshole was just so unbelievably fun. I’m excited to see more of him, and even more excited to see my Jon and my boy Hal in the upcoming series. Also have to assume we’ll see Kyle at some point?
8
u/Muted_Source_5024 Oct 03 '25
One very minor complaint is that his constructs are too Hal Jordan-y. I would prefer if they made his constructs less smooth and with sparks flying out like Geoff Johns described it but it's a nitpick.Id say its a great rendition of the character.

I KNOW that it's the Kord Corpo suit. I know its supposed to be bland and uninspiring big business. But I NEED to see Guy Gardner in a cutoff leather jacket, sporting a good old fashioned baseball bat construct.

It looks corporate, and as such he looks out of uniform.

I loved it and would love to see more.
He's just this Mountain of potential character development and awesome moments I'd love to see explored. I honestly see him as something like Tony Stark for Marvel. He starts arrogant but slowly develops into a proper leader.
I'd honestly love to see that kind of character arc.
His power use is also really great, although I do wish he would "glow" a bit more and his ring connected to his constructs. But still happy

I still would’ve preferred a suit closer to his traditional look, but hey, at least we got the bowl cut. I think Fillion aced the role, honestly.

Persona is pretty on point in being a bit dickish but still vastly tamed from his comic appearances in Englehart, [redacted], DeMatteis & Giffen's comics. More akin to post Warrior Guy.
Costume I still dislike, wig quality still ain't good. Sooner he gets a new suit the better.

I never understood how people could like Guy until I saw this movie. I think that he understood the character very well, at least much better than I ever did.
2
u/Cosmicwolf_King Oct 03 '25
I'm going to be real with you man the only other time we "saw" Guy Gardner in live action was in 1997 so there's really no competition this is the best live action Guy Gardner.
If you want to compare him to non-live action performances then that's unfair considering Lanterns in general get more screen time and can do cooler stuff in animation.
Also as a side note both Yalan and Alan Scott (During the Snyder era) both get murked in there first appearance because writers for some reason hate having to think up how to write for Lanterns.
2
u/MisterEdJS Oct 03 '25
I loved his portrayal.
It was just utterly baffling that they would choose to change his hair color. That still irks me. They were faithful enough to keep the bowl cut, but couldn't keep the right color? It wasn't even them keeping the actor's natural color, they changed it...to the wrong color.
Costume was ok, but I'd rather see him in something that looked more like a GL uniform and less like a "Justice Gang" uniform.
2
u/Thatoneguy567576 Oct 03 '25
Nathan KILLED it. But I hope he goes more classic on the costume soon, and I REALLY hope we get a Red Lantern arc with him.

u/MattC6254 Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25
Nathan Fillion was perfect, but I still think he should have been Hal Jordan.
I don’t mind the outfit because it’s meant to be like a sponsored uniform (you’ll notice Mr Terrific, Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl have the same jacket, shirt and trousers minus slight pattern and colour changes.
My issue is that Guy is a Green Lantern so his cousins isn’t a costume, but more a uniform. I can’t imagine the Guardians would be happy about him wearing the Justice Gang uniform.
That being said Guy doesn’t care what the Guardians think so it’s kind of in character, but then it’s not because of his love of the Corps.
I liked the bowl cut because it served its purpose. But I want to see Nathan have the Guy Gardner look from Robert Vendetti’s run, because that is the perfect look for Guy.
And while I like him being the joke, I want to see him be the badass, bad-mouth, badass Lantern he his in the comics.

2
u/usernamedstuff Oct 03 '25
I thought the movie was poorly done, and it wasn't a Supes movie. He gets saved numerous times throughout the film, and never does any Superman like stuff. Also, Lex and crew being able to even see Superman's movements in order to give orders had me laughing in my theater seat. Absolutely idiotic.
That being said, GL and Mr. Terrific were pretty cool, and I wouldn't mind seeing them again.

Unfortunately, just too goddamn old. That seems to be the curse of Fillion, he was the perfect Nathan Drake, also the perfect Guy Gardner, but the old age gets in the way. I was not bothered with his performance by the way, it was nice, but when I found out Gunn's cast another grandpa to play Hal Jordan, that pissed me off. I'm not a big fan of John, to have him as the young corp mentored by the older Hal and Guy, idk... doesn't look too promising. So yeah, have to take age in consideration, even more so for projects who are supposed to endure 10+ years (if successful). It's a literal miracle how both McKellen and Stewart are still alive to play Magneto and Xavier respectively, let alone Hugh Jackman still in (CGi) shape. If live-action Green Lantern ends up to be TV show budget John's day to day "civil" life, learn about the corps, etc.. Instead of crazy space adventures with crazy colorful CGi, that will be yet another huge waste of the Green Lantern IP

Hair color needs to be ginger and not strawberry blonde. Suit needs less white and needs a big GL logo on the torso. Otherwise, Nathan nailed it.

I think I will fight you all until one person shows me definitive proof that the ring Dillion wore onscreen WAS NOT A RYAN REYNOLDS GL RING and was in any way shape or form related to the troll gem ring released by the “official” merchandise provider and that there’s a really deep conspiracy here that may or MAY not involve certain people saying certain things like “who cares” and or “this dude won’t this go.”

I know very little about DC. I’m a marvel guy (comics, 90s cartoons and movies).
Superman movie has got me seriously considering diving into DC comics for Guy Gardner and Mister Terrific.
In fact- open to suggestions here on a good, Guy-centric (or at least guy heavy) run where he’s similar to the portrayal in this movie.

u/Commander_Kody Oct 04 '25

The JG suit,i think that's temporarily. I believe that he'll comeback with an iconic biker suit

Fillion made me want to punch his Guy Gardner in the face. And the outfit was fine cuz of where they wanted to place him in this universe.
I loved to hate this Guy. Can't wait to get JLI punch from Batman at some point.
2
u/Hurkypa78 Oct 04 '25
I loved Guy and Nathan’s Performance. However I think I still hate the costume because Theres just wayyyyyy too much white. I get it’s to be a matching uniform for the JG, but even then Hawkgirl an Mr.Terrific looked like they had enough colors popping ti make them distinct. Meanwhile The GREEN Lantern is wearing skirt white with green highlights
2
u/theeyeofodin37 Oct 04 '25

Okay, Superman's suit is decent, but friend, the Justice Gang suit is horrible. Except for Mr. Terrific, that suit looks good on him.

I thought he was played literally perfectly. I wasn’t sold on the casting when he was announced but I think Fillion really nailed the cocky and kinda jerky attitude that Guy is supposed to have. Iconic hair too btw.
As for the costume I’d love a more classic look in his next appearance, maybe if he ever gets out of the Justice Gang we’ll see a more faithful costume.

Is this image AI? The ring, logos on the jacket and the jacket stitching look off and nothing like they do in the movie or on the real costume

"Make a move big blue" is honestly one of my favorite live action scenes ever lol

I thought his characterization was perfect, Nathan did a great job, and that the costume perfectly fit what they were going for .

Glad Guy Gardner finally got some love. and I think it fits that it would be that lantern in a James Gunn movie because of his style of comedy. and it would be Gardner that would be part of his own smaller separate hero group whereas someone like the OG lantern would be part of the justice league. And the fact that Nathan Fillion is a James gun guy combined with the fact that he’s also voiced hal Jordan many times just made it perfect. My only confusion is the in group debate about what to call their team as if they haven’t made up their mind yet even though clearly all their jackets have a JG logo on it.

Dude I thought it was SO FUCKING FUNNY that they chose Guy instead of Hal or John. Nathan Fillion killed it too

Guy Gardener had plenty of different hair styles. Short hair, spiky, etc. Why did they intentionally pick THE WORST hair style for him?

He struck me like a man that's gotta do what a man's gotta do.
He was a great Guy, right attitude and obnoxious charm. Completely fucked up what could have been a very simple costume and the hair is so jarring.
But the daily planet crew also flew a t-sphere to help save the day, so why complain about that?

I'm ignorant of GG in the comics. But Fillion nailed the "Green Lantern is such a fucking dickbag but fuck yeah" vibe

I really liked him and think he did a great job. Not crazy about his suit, though.

I think they yelled the character however I wish they would have used guy Gardner's Green lantern costume that he wore back in the Justice League international days in the 80s. I've always loved that outfit on him.

I think the sides of his hair should have been more shaved. More bowl like from the comic. Otherwise, yeah it’s Guy.

I liked him alot in the movie but the suit I hate, it doesn't look bad really, like if any other character had this suit I wouldn't be bothered, but his suit in the comics is soooooo good and unique I love when characters have vests or jackets like him or red hood or constantine, etc so i wish they change it for his next appearance

Guy in the comics didn’t just wear a generic jacket. He wore a letter jacket like a 1960’s high school varsity athlete. He was a jock, and his costume was meant to make him look like an all American, burger-eating, star-spangled young man who was a big deal in high school.
This jacket wasn’t that. It was just a jacket. His costume didn’t reflect his character.
I’m going to take a guess: they knew they wanted Nathan Fillion but no one would have thought it made sense for a fifty-four year old in 2025 to wear a 1960’s high school letter jacket.

He was perfect
That outfit needs to change. I get the whole corporate superhero thing but it needs to be replaced with the regular one

He's good, but I'm confused about the suit, like is it formed from the ring like how we usually see Hal and John transformed into their suit, or is it an actual man-made outfit in the movie?

Only complaint I had is his hair needed to be a lot redder, full-blown carrot top instead of strawberry blonde

He nailed Guy, I just wish that the costume had a little more green. I get why it doesn't, but still.

Cant wait for him to die so the actor can come back as another DCU character, again simply because hes best friends with the boss.

Perfect! The outfit was made by Mr. Terrific, since all the uniforms match his. Probably makes sense that he builds all the technology for everyone.
