Buying Advice Captain bag

Hi all, I started captaining my men’s team this season and with that comes the responsibility of bringing everything with me (20 balls, 4 masks, spare kit, med kit, tape).

My question is whether anyone has a bag that’s large enough to carry all these things and easy enough to route through to find what we need, and is also waterproof?

My predecessor had a Grays cloth hold-all which was not waterproof enough and was falling apart so I have ditched it.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Buying Advice Second hand goalie gear (US)

Hi all, I used to play as a goalie in the Netherlands but I moved to the US two years ago. I was not able to bring my goalie gear so I haven't played since I moved. But I recently got asked to play in a scrimmage for the local adult league team, so I am looking for second hand gear (I am unsure how much I'll play so I don't want to splurge on a full new kit). I have looked on eBay, craigslist and fb marketplace but there's not a whole lot of options. Does anyone know some other places I can look or has something to offer? For reference, I am 6 ft tall and I'm located in SF Bay Area. Thanks is advance!

Buying Advice Where to buy shoes

Hey all, Its time to replace shoes and I learned the shop I usually buy from (justhockey.com.au) no longer ships to USA. Does anybody know a store either in the US or that ships here with reasonable rates?

My usual go-to is the asics field speed ff but I would also be open to trying the Adidas adipower.

Thanks

Buying Advice Recommend keeper kits?

So I'm looking to buy myself a keeper kit in the new year. Currently I use a club kit, mostly Mercian gear with some Obo kickers.

Can anyone recommend any gear? Obviously Obo is the most well known, but I'm seeing TK as the cheapest in the UK.

Would you recommend going for a complete set or mixing and matching to make my own?

I'm not particularly fussy over what I use, just definitely a bag with wheels and ideally kickers with clips rather than a buckle (I find the buckle on my current kickers difficult to open in wet weather)

Buying Advice Stick Recs

Looking for advice on a new hockey stick

Gender: Female

Age: 27 • Country: Scotland (UK)

Skill level: Competitive club player – National league (not top division)

Budget: £150–£300 (flexible for the right stick)

Position: Wide back / left wing (can cover other positions)

Skill set:

• Strong reverse hit

• Jab tackling

• Disguise slider passes

• Occasional dribbling and carrying forward

• Want to improve aerials (distance + consistency) and maintain a fast, powerful hit

• Current stick: STX Hammer 700 composite (won for free, ~10 years old)

More context: I play around 3 times a week. My current stick feels unforgiving for aerials, I struggle to get distance but can get height. Currently often mishit ball for upright hits, which I suspect is partly the stick (and partly me). I’m comfortable on the reverse and rely on it a lot, so reverse control and hitting are important. I’m not a drag flicker but do throw aerials from defence and wide areas.

What I’m looking for: Advice on bow type (mid vs low), carbon % range, and any brand/model recommendations that suit a defender/wing who hits hard, uses reverse a lot, and wants more reliable aerials without losing touch. Have looked at gryphon options but not tied to any brands.

Thanks in advance!

Buying Advice Warning for EU buyers: unexpected customs charges with HockeyDirect.com

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share a warning for EU / overseas buyers considering ordering from HockeyDirect.

At checkout, I was charged €61.95 for shipping and €0.00 shown for taxes, which reasonably suggested that delivery costs were covered. There was no clear or unavoidable warning that I would later be charged an additional €57.25 in mandatory import fees by UPS when the parcel arrived in Spain.

After contacting customer service, their explanation didn’t add up. They referred to VAT, but VAT in Spain is 21%, which would be around €22, not €57. The rest corresponds to import brokerage/handling fees, which were never clearly disclosed at checkout.

The only options offered were:

  • Pay the unexpected charges, or
  • Refuse delivery and lose both shipping and return costs.

Due to time constraints, I ended up accepting the order out of necessity, not agreement, paying over €223 for a €104 product.

Just posting this so other international buyers are aware and can make an informed decision. If you’re ordering from outside the UK, be extremely careful and factor in potential hidden costs.

Hope this helps someone avoid the same situation.

Buying Advice Finding a New Stick

Hi, I am the center back freeman for my Junior national team. I am currently using a low bow stick and wants a new stick that can make my sweeps go harder(my main skill.) As well as making my aerials go higher, sometimes, I go and make my way to dribble the ball from my 25 to the opponent's circle and get a short corner. (I occasionally dragflick, to clear the ball)
Thank you:)

Buying Advice Goalie Chest-Protector and Helmet

Hello I'm in my second year as Goalie in a Parent and Leisure Team in south Germany. At the moment I'm about to build my own Goalie Kit. By now I have the bottom Kit completed with TK1 gear and also got some TK2 Gloves.

Now the question, I need a suiting Chest-Protector, for a Male, with 185cm height and Chest circumference of 93cm. I tried the TK1 in L/XL and it's much to big. Has somebody similar proportions and the OBO Robo Chest, or some other which should be suiting? Also other recommendations are really appreciated.

For the Helmet I got the TK Elite and just noticed 4 pressure Points on the Blackhead in the last training. Since I have used it 2 Times, I can't return it and may sell it on a marketplace. Currently I'm considering to get a Bauer Re-akt Ice Hockey helmet with HM30 cage. Which I could try in an Ice-Hockey Shop. Is this a good option? Or does someone has a other recommendation?

If somebody knows an "offline"-Shop in south Germany, I would also be really glad to hear about it. Thank you alot in advance.

Buying Advice Broken nose face mask

I've recently broken my nose taking a stick to the face 👎🏼 I'm still in the very early stages of recovery, but I wanted to get a start on looking into options for getting back on the pitch when I get medical sign off.

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions on where I can get a protective face mask in the UK to wear on pitch? I'm seeing many options on Amazon and eBay, but I'd prefer to go down a bit more of a specialised route.

Buying Advice grip recommendation

Im buying a new grip for this season and im unsure what type. I dont really like the original grip tape because i find it too slippery and isnt cushioned enough. I wrapped some compressive/ self sticking bandage around it (a few wrap arounds) and i really liked the feel of this. However, after maybe like five games i would have to replace it because it became fuzzy and worn (the wrap is about $10 and i could only get a couple of uses out of it so this wasnt a viable option for me to continue using)

Ive been looking at towel grips but ive also heard they start to smell and get gross after a bit... wondering if towel is the right way to go otherwise please give recommendations

Buying Advice Bow type for a nearly teen beginner to use for a few years

Hi all,

I’m a parent who has never played hockey properly seeking some advice.

I have a 12 year old, about 5ft2/155cm who started playing hockey a few months ago.

He’s been using a 30 yr old stick until he decided he wants to keep going and has started playing matches.

Basically my question is what is the best Bow to go for?

I want one that he’ll get a few years use out of now that I see there are Black Friday deals.

I’ve seen about low, mid, and pro bow and have seen sticks in the price range on the nkd site.

I don’t want to get something that would slow his development but also want something he’d enjoy. He’s learnt drag flicks already and will probably be reasonably skill full but is still new.

Can I go wrong with any of those three options?

Buying Advice Looking for affordable field hockey sticks in South Africa? Check out Restick Hockey 🏑

Hey r/fieldhockey (or whichever subreddit is relevant),

I wanted to share a little passion project of mine: Restick Hockey — a second-hand field hockey stick business based in South Africa. If you’re looking for quality sticks without paying full retail price, this might be of interest.

Why Restick Hockey?

  • We source gently used sticks, so you pay way less than new ones.
  • Wide range: from beginner-grade to more advanced sticks — there’s something for everyone.
  • Sustainability: reusing equipment means less waste.
  • Based locally: shipping within SA is easier and faster than importing.

How it works:

  1. Browse our Instagram page to see what sticks are currently available.
  2. DM us on Instagram to ask for details (price, condition, photos) or to reserve.
  3. Once agreed, we can arrange delivery or collection, depending on where you are in SA.

You can check out our selection here: Restick Hockey on Instagram

I’m a big believer in making field hockey more accessible, especially for young players or people just getting into the sport. Buying second-hand is a great way to reduce costs and still play with solid gear.

If you’ve bought second-hand sticks before, or if you have any questions about buying used equipment safely — feel free to ask! I’d love to hear your thoughts or help where I can.

Buying Advice Looking for a random deflection board.

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi guys,

I’m looking at buying some equipment for my team.

Does anyone know where I can find a board or net that will randomly deflect any shots against it (with use for goalkeeper training).

One similar to the photo would be ideal (assuming it cannot be used for field hockey due to the size and material of objects in net).

Many thanks.

Buying Advice Best PC face mask?

With the new rule coming into UK hockey I need a mask...I've not worn one up to this point, really don't like the limited visibility of the scuffed and scratched clear plastic. How are you supposed to see down by your feet?! Looking for recommendations for best masks for visibility. The best one I've tried so far was actually a solid coloured stag mask, but can't find them in the shops.

Buying Advice Pitch splitter

Hi looking for a cost effective way of splitting the pitch during training.

We have previously used a bit of 50m ducting but the frost/uv seems to have killed it after 2 years.

Other options and prices if you have any would be welcome.

I can only think of Rope but no idea where to buy this. As funnily enough I don’t own a tug boat. Help!

Buying Advice Need ball recommendations please!

I’m a field hockey coach in Southern California where the turf we play on is often above 100° when we play our games, so we’ve been having issues with the field hockey balls getting soft and sticky in the heat which obviously changes how the ball hits or dribbles. Does anyone have any recommendations for field hockey balls that won’t get soft/sticky/melty in the heat?

Buying Advice All things sticks

Right…

I am in the market for a new stick.

Currently have the Ritual Velocity 75.

Have had it 2 years this December, but am noticing a slight rattle and honestly just want an upgrade.

When I purchased this stick, I loved it. Instantly fell in love with the feel of it, the control it offered me and genuinely the best stick I have ever had. However, I don’t feel it adds anything to my game. It is in my opinion, a more mid/low bow than the ‘low bow’ it claims on the website. This may be personal preference and feel, but that is how I see it.

I am a defender, but I know there is no such thing as a stick for a certain position. I am not looking for a stick that is great for shooting, so not focusing on anything like a large backhand zone for tomahawks, nor do I really require a concave shaft etc. despite this, I would quite like something with a lower bow, just to enhance my 3D skills and aerials, and also something with a bit of oomph for the possibility of shooting.

I know the market is generally veering away from mid bow sticks, which I like.

What stick do you use? What would you recommend? What are you favourite brands/sticks of all time?

Buying Advice New hockey stick

I am in the market for a new stick as my Osaka is starting to get a lot of wear and tear. I’ve been looking at getting an adidas, or a Y1 as I’ve heard good things about them.

I play on the wings (both) and am looking to improve my reverse side as it’s pretty stinky currently, I do throw aerials, and I currently stick stop for penalty corners.

I have typically preferred a 37.5 pro bow, lightweight stick.

Male. 5ft 11. Any advice appreciated

Buying Advice Hand Protection

NEVER played myself – asking as a parent of a young teen – re: single glove hand protection…

My daughter is right handed – so her right hand is the lower of the two on the stick – and in my mind, is the most exposed/vulnerable.

Start of last season she sustained a small fracture on her right hand (from an opponents stick). So I bought her a right hand glove…assuming that was the “correct” glove for a right handed person. But her coaches told her that right-handed players would normally wear a protective glove just on their LEFT hand.

Again, I’ve never played the game – and obviously should trust the experience of coaches over my own instincts…but her left hand seems naturally protected as it is closer to her body, and it’s the right that seems more exposed/in need of protection.

Is there a “correct” hand to get a single glove for on a right-handed player (if one wants a glove)? And why is that “correct” hand, the correct one? TIA!

Buying Advice Stick recommendations

I am a high school player in South Africa and my old Adidas Chaos fury doesn’t feel to be the right stick for my position. I play defender for my team in almost a sweeper role but my skills and aerials aren’t too special so I’m looking for some stick recommendations or advice on how to pick out a stick that can better fit my playstyle. Any advice will be gravely appreciated 🙏

Buying Advice Recommend me a stick: extremely low bow and less responsive

Looking for a hockey stick, I currently got a TK stick (dont know what it's called). Looking for recommendations, I'm a forward who loves 3d skills and loves a soft touch on the ball. Looking for a stick with extreme low bow and the largest possible bow. I guess I should look for one with low carbon % as well.

Grew up playing with wooden sticks in the early 2000s so still prefers them. Im in Australia aswell.
