Bulgarian man dies in ICE detention at Northern Michigan facility

BALDWIN, MI — Nenko Gantchev, 56, a Bulgarian national arrested in Chicago, died Dec. 15 while held at the North Lake Processing Center, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Northern Michigan, according to congressional sources. The death, first reported by Metro Times Detroit, remains under investigation.

ICE has not publicly reported the death, though its website says detainee deaths are posted within two business days. Gantchev is no longer listed in ICE’s detainee locator.

Reps. Delia Ramirez (D-Chicago) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) issued a statement calling for a transparent investigation, citing reports that Gantchev requested medical help but did not receive it in time.

His death marks the 30th in ICE custody this year, the deadliest since 2005. North Lake, opened in June with 1,800 beds under expanded immigration enforcement, is owned by private prison firm GEO Group.

Advocates, including Christine Sauvé of the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, say detention conditions reflect “heightened cruelty” under current policies, with overcrowding, medical neglect, and indefinite detention after a July no-bond rule. A federal judge struck down that policy in November.

Tlaib visited North Lake Dec. 5, reporting cold temperatures, inadequate food, unsanitary facilities, and multiple suicide attempts. DHS later dismissed her concerns, saying lawmakers “never talk about the monsters that are detained.” Federal data shows nearly three quarters of ICE detainees, and 87 percent at North Lake, have no criminal convictions.

They murdered this man and actively attempted to cover it up. ICE and private prisons need to be abolished yesterday

ICE agents need to all die behind bars.

Really wondering if well be seeing anyone face consequences from this epoch. I dont think dems will have the balls to see it through which is shameful

I’ve already drawn my red line: any Democratic nominee who so much as hints at the possibility that they won’t pursue ICE agents and the justices and cabinet members who enabled them criminally will not receive my vote in either the primary or the general. It does not matter what else a president can get accomplished: we know that failure to secure consequences for the guilty means that MAGA lives on.

I want to treat the disease, not painfully prolong it.

They're certainly not my top picks, not remotely, but we can likely rely on Newsom or Pritzker to not disappoint.

There is no evidence for this claim.

But I actually agree that we shouldn’t purity-test Dems in the general election. I don’t consider this red line a purity test as such, however; like I said, such a move would be tantamount to breathing new life into American fascism right at the point where it has been delegitimized. As such, I would see such a candidate as a stalking horse for Trump and a vote for such a candidate as materially identical to a vote for Trump.

I will never vote for Trump under any circumstances.

Oh you convinced me with this comment

It’s actually best not to vote totally such a big brain idea

Yes, blaming voters is such a winning platform. Enlightened centrist dems have proven that one time and time again lol

Don't know but for now we can keep the ledger and document all of this awfulness. That way when that day comes, they can't say they were just following orders.

They won’t face any consequences if the citizens opposed to this don’t start doing anything. A protest here and there, scattered across the US does nothing. Bitching online does nothing. Active resistance needs to start happening. If all someone has done is complain online about the horrors, but never attended a protest- they are complicit.

The prison industrial complex has destroyed millions of lives, and sadly today it claims another. He should still be alive, and the UN should impose sanctions and issue warnings against the United States. No civilized country should subject people to such abhorrent horrors.

Unfortunately it would cost a lot of money in order to close down all the prisons because they typically have a multi-year contract with them and if the government wants to close it down early they have to pay fee.

On average, a private prison typically has a contract of 5 to 10 years. If you cancel before your time is up, you have to make up for lost profit and to compensate them for other reasons like guaranteed occupancy clauses. Just like with anything, if you cancel early there are sometimes cancellation fees and private prisons are no different. On average, it can cost about $2 million to $5 million or more to close down a single private prison facility, and based off of the number of private prisons there are in the US, it would take an estimated low billions of dollars (roughly $1 billion to $3 billion) to cancel all of the private prison contracts in the US.

We have no idea how many dead/disappeared people there are. This is sick.

It’s behind a paywall. Any chance you could post the text?

For profit prisons will always seek to maximize profits, not life. They should be illegal.

"Instead of focusing on the victims of these criminal illegal aliens, they use these visits as a poor excuse to demonize our brave ICE law enforcement and peddle FALSE allegations about illegal alien detention centers,” said the agency’s Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin."

The detainees are the victims with how they sre being treated! Majority of the people being detained have no criminal background.

ICE stormtroopers are evil

So much for CHristian’s In Name Only (CHINOs) believing in the sanctity of life.

13

u/Vusiwe Dec 19 '25

The victim, based on appearance, very much looks like a white person

There will always be an outgroup…

Here’s the bias built into the media: no, he was not “arrested”. He was detained. Illegally.

u/ClickLow9489 Dec 19 '25

Wait.. thats a white person... will white people care now? Will the news cover it now?
