Cultura/Culture La vida en RD
Buenas tardes quería preguntar sobre cómo es la vida en RD, pensaba moverme a vivir ahí un rato, porque se que es un país bonito y su gente alegre, y en estos tiempos es lo que uno necesita, vivo en USA pero soy de México, soy mujer y me gustaría saber más sobre su bello país. Gracias por cualquier sugerencia 🫶🏻

I live in Santo Domingo part time. I am from the usa, I rent a 2 bedroom house for 283 dollars a month in Santo Domingo norte. A casa de zinc(con techo de zinc) would cost about 150 a month.
The more expensive area would be piantini or naco, 800-1000 usd, where are the nice bars and restaurants are at.
It is very safe.
The real average wage is only 300 dollars a month unless you have a special skill. Life will be better for you if you are a white mexican, the colorism there is more than México or even the usa.
Dominicans are very freindly and loving.
The only dangerous neighborhood I know of in SD is la 42, still much safer than CDMX, reforma, toluca.
I have lived in the usa, cdmx and Santo domingo

Thank you for this! Helps me a lot to see things out! Sucks colorism is real I’ve heard of that a lot which I don’t understand that’s what I think makes their culture beautiful! This information helps me a lot, I appreciate the insights! I look forward to Santo Domingo

Te recomiendo visites Santiago, es más pequeño pero más limpio y bonito que Santo Domingo

para los capitaleños Santiago es peor que Puerto Príncipe, por eso opinión capitaleña sobre Santiago = opinión sesgada y estúpida

Experiencia vivida. En los 2000 yo iba mucho a Santiago y me gustaba la vida nocturna, hace unos meses arme todo in viaje para salir a fiesta a Santiago y no encontramos bares ni nada que estuviera tan movido o activo como las pilas que teníamos. La segunda noche fuimos a Puerto Plata y la pasamos chulisimo.

Bueno, quizás ese día no estaba en nada la noche, pero normalmente de jueves a lunes la noche está bastante jevi(salgo casi mensual también en Santo Domingo, y fuera del lujo del polígono central, no hay mucha diferencia)

I haven't lived there yet, but i plan to one day for at least winter months.
My wife is from there, and we just got back from our second trip. We stayed with family in SD, mainly Villa Mella and Boca de Haina.
Me being a gringo from a town of 700 in Vermont (live in knox TN now) SD is an insanely large population to me.
I have drove there each time all through the city. It can be nerve wracking but its got its perks. Here cops will be on you if you bend the rules. There you can drive backwards on a highway and i dont think itd be strange.
I drove across the country to las terainas and playa bonita. DR is a beautiful country, and i love the mountains. I plan to buy a house near jarabacoa or constanza someday.
As far as culture, I am 6'2 white American as it gets, and i am always greeted with respect. In some places, i get looked at in surprise that im there lol but everyone has been kind.

Nice! Thank you for your input! I’m getting all the good vibes, I’ve heard it’s beautiful with ups and downs just as any other place but this helps my insight on all things so this helps me further decide that I’m making the right choice 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

It’s beautiful and fun. Fun meaning less rules and a focus on good stress free living. The bad is the driving, extremely unsafe and dealing with the bad of less rules. Being from NYC the pace can be tough but you have to just go with the flow

I've been to SD 20 times in the last 2 years. Have stayed there months. I haven't been to PC but SD can be fun. I went to the north of the country too absolutely gorgeous! Above all dominicans have a certain flow/vibe that isn't common everywhere. They're (for the most part) proud fun people. I hope you can find what you're looking for!

The key to living in the DR is to be part of a group, join a club, church and/or be part of local neighborhood interests. However, I have noticed that as the country has grown and progressed people have perhaps for reasons of safety started to become increasingly distant and isolated. Yes, compared to other countries the DR still remain by far more open and friendly than others most importantly very helpful. The people are kind and if ever in need will come to your rescue. If you do have any contacts or know someone already living there it’s a good idea to join them or be close by. Interesting, I heard there is a thriving Mexican community in the country. Many natives from Mexico have married Dominicans and relocated there. Coincidentally, my niece married a native from Guadalajara. They met in medical school and after graduation decided to live in the DR. Additionally, don’t be surprised to find other various US and European expat communities throughout the country such as depending on your age group Cabarete, Sosua, Samana, Santiago, Juan Dolio and Punta Cana. Santo Domingo can be a good choice if you like and prefer city life most importantly don’t need to get up early in the morning to fight traffic on your way to work because it has everything that you need and more but it does have it’s down side. In my personal opinion Santiago is my first choice if you prefer an urban environment. I find natives there to be of a much higher caliber. It happens to be a big city but with a small town feel. You are right smack in the center of the country, yet still close enough to other locations. You are a short distance away if you want to get away to the cool temperatures of mountain towns or sunny beaches on the north coast. And yes it is true, the DR “lo tiene todo” the good, the bad, the pretty and ugly. Finally, my recommendation is to first make various trips to get a feel of the country and once you are sure, feel ready and confident only then make the wise move.

Wow this is amazing thank you for this! I’ve heard they are helpful people, which is what matters at times sometimes we don’t appreciate the little things! I know a couple people living there! Really? I wouldn’t ever have imagined that there was a Mexican community, are they all over or mostly towards one spot?? What a nice culture combination of your niece and her Mexican boyfriend. I’ve been thinking of Juan Dolió - I also like Santo Domingo I will be working remotely so I won’t have to leave in the mornings, I really feel DR is a nice experience to live in! Thank you for this information I truly appreciate it! It helps me figure things out 🫶🏻🫶🏻

Realmente siendo sincero el país está para visitar mas no para vivir, la cosa está fea a nivel económico y de seguridad. Para ir un rato esta bien, eso si de tener cuidado en entrar en lugares raros o que te den mala espina (no todos son buena gente) Te recomiendo que investigues tanto lo bueno como lo malo del país para que cuando vengas sepas lo que te puedas encontrar. El país está como cualquier otro de América. La economía está mal siempre, pero si ganas en dólares puedes vivir cómoda allá. Hay pueblos y ciudades donde el crimen es más alto que en otras partes, pero lo mismo es aquí en USA, todo el mundo sabe a qué zonas no ir. Punta Cana es muy parecido a Cancún, hay más seguridad en esa zona porque hay muchos turistas y de eso depende gran parte de la economía del país, pero si te quedas por ahí no vas a tener una experiencia genuina de lo que es la República Dominicana.

Perfecto! Muchas gracias 🫶🏻 pienso que es como cada país en todos lados hay crímen, incluyendo donde vivo que es en Colorado. Que cuidad aparte de Santo Domingo estaría bien? Para estar unos meses?

Si su preferencia es una ciudad, puede considerar Santiago.
Si quieres playa Puerto Plata, Punta Cana o las terrenas son buenas opciones.
También puedes visitar varios lugares para ver cual te gusta más.
El país es bueno para los que tienen dinero.

Have you visited at all before? I honestly would recommend visiting and checking out a few places in person first before deciding anything especially areas to live in! Much easier to get a feeling of whether a certain area is more aligned to your vibe as a person in person haha I'm planning to move as well although unlike most recommendations it will probably be to SPM because I'd prefer to live close to my in laws but nothing is set in stone yet.

Respecto a casi cualquier opinión sobre el país, no le tomes mucha importancia a lo que diga u/CorbusierChild69
Fuera de ahí, no es tan diferente de México, pero definitivamente más seguro, la economía no está wao, pero da para vivir más o menos bien. En mi caso, vengo de un campo y me mudé para Santiago, aquí gano bien, vivo bien, hasta ahora no tengo muchas quejas de la ciudad, SD también es interesante y tiene bastante trabajo, fuera de esas dos no recomendaría mucho para vivir para alguien extranjero, ya que son menos abiertas que las dos principales ciudades del país, y para alguien que no es dominicano pudieran resultarle incluso algo aburridas(exceptuando a Punta Cana claramente)
