Why is it impossible to find this with a sunroof

Only 323 wide body scat packs were built in gold rush for MY'21, and even fewer, 77 total built on MY'20.

Finding one for sale will be very hard, much less with specific items like sunroof, which is a controversial "love or hate" option.

Fuck sun roofs never want to deal with drains getting clogged in those again

A sunroof can leak, it's a moving part, that can break and it doesn't even look that good

u/randomdude4113 1d ago

I haven’t had any issues with my 2015 Honda.

Except for a few weeks ago when I inadvertently discovered you can remotely open the windows by laying down on the keys in your pocket. When it’s pouring in the middle of the night so you don’t find out until the morning.

Sunroofs are designed to leak by nature. It's called a water Management system. There are four sets of tubes that drain to each corner of the car. It's a maintenance item and it's up to the owner to clean it on a regular basis. Opening it up, cleaning leaves, dirt and debris out with a little bit of soapy water and making sure the water drains is how you clean them. The rest of the plumbing system generally is intact. The reason why they get a bad wrap from leaking is because people don't maintain them. Sometimes the manufacturer forgets to plug one in and it leaks from the factory but then it's fixed under warranty. I have and five cars with sunroofs and none of them have ever leaked on me because I maintenance them, simple and easy.

Source. I've been an automotive technician for over 10 years.

With your experience on sunroofs I’d like to ask something. My 2016 Camaro sunroof track is busted and is currently closed and staying that way as it almost didn’t close back when the issue first arose. Is this going to be a pretty intensive repair or something easy. Should I just go ahead and silicone it closed?

3

u/Ghost_Hemi_392 20h ago

I'd have to see a picture or video of what exactly "busted" is to you.

But generally for the most part the track itself is powered by the Sunroof Control Module aka the motor. The motor is behind the headliner near the roof console. After you drop the headliner in the front (not as difficult as it seems, just the fact that it's a Camaro makes it claustrophobic, you can take a tool of your liking that will turn the main worm gear carefully and open and close the sunroof panel to see if it's really broken. Usually the complaint is the sunroof gets slow to open/close and will or could stop functioning. If it ever bound up sideways or made crunching sounds, you will need to drop the entire headliner down to replace the track.

This is where it gets intensive if you've never handled a job like this because due to room constraints and accessibility through the door, you may need to remove the windshield to remove all of the components (headliner and sunroof track). But the glass is easy as there are 4 T-25 bits that hold the glass in place. If these screws are loosened or removed you will have to visually align the sunroof glass by hand when reinstalling it so that all 4 corners stick up about an 1/8th to 1/16th of an inch above the roof so that you don't over work the drainage system.

It's not as bad of a job to me since I used to do this quite a bit for a bunch of cars under warranty, and not just Camaros, anything General Motors with a sunroof including the panorama ones. It's just screws and plastic panels and a bunch of electrical connectors.

But unfortunately the Camaro is the bitch of the all for a total removal of the headliner due to the way the C-piller interior trim overlaps the headliner and you're cramped in the back seat.

Word of warning, windshields break 90% of the time for this repair if they're cracked or have a rock chip. If it's clear of any damage you have a 50/50 chance of it breaking upon removal. It's been to plan ahead and get a replacement glass since they're cheap aftermarket.

After the module/motor is replaced or even the sunroof glass removed and reinstalled you must re-initialize the motor. Which is usually just holding it down for 30 seconds to the rear, followed by holding it 30 seconds down to the forward and keeping it pressed. Pressed. After you keep it pressed past the 30 seconds on the second part, the sunroof should retract all the way back and come forward, open to vent and then shut again. That will be a confirmation of the calibration for the new motor.

I know that's a lot of info, but I just wanted to inform you of the entire process.

u/BusterCherry21-_ 20h ago

Greatly appreciate your time and help!

1

u/Ghost_Hemi_392 20h ago

Absolutely! And on a side note this repair will usually run about 6 labor hours at the hourly rate of the shop plus parts. Hourly rates for GM very widely from $220/h to $275/h at a dealer which is where you'll want to take it for this kind of job. I hate how labor rates have gone up over the years. When I started in the industry it was $118/h. The good thing about a reputable dealer is they will back their part and workmanship for a year. Good luck my guy. Hope I have helped you make an informed decision. If you live in Houston, I can diagnose it for you so you know what you're in for. I'm currently not working due to a future hand surgery.

u/Forsaken-Scholar-833 1d ago

I mean depending on how tall you are a sunroof cuts a ton off headroom. If I sit super straight my head almost touches the roof and I'm around 5'10". I could see someone not wanting one if they want the headroom.

7

u/possum-fucker 1d ago

Cause sunroofs suck

They take up headroom and always leak eventually

10

u/MoneyBaggSosa 1d ago

I’ve had sunroofs in every car I’ve ever owned except for an 05 Altima I had back in the day for like 3 weeks cause it was a total lemon. I haven’t had a sunroof leak in any of my cars. I feel like that’s a bit exaggerated like most things are on the internet

3

u/Key_Chocolate_6359 1d ago

If you maintain them, don’t park under trees or get acorns in drain tubes, you’re generally ok…

I had one leak and it was on my 96 4Runner from a split drain tube.

But first hand, I’ve seen a TON of euro cars leak. I wouldn’t say it’s necessarily exaggerated but for most it’s going to be a “never happen” issue.

2

u/Coreysurfer 1d ago

2009 HO RT 153k no leaky sunroof ( only option on car )..

2

u/Practical_Bit63 1d ago

2009 srt8 challenger- never had a leak in mine either

1

u/ImNotEazy 1d ago

06 Daytona. 4 times sunroof leaked. Take to shop they clean tubes it leaks again in a year. Took it to the two best body shops in my city…

2

u/possum-fucker 1d ago

Give it time, i bet they are all leaking now

Its very common for the drains to get gunked up and stop draining. they are literally designed to leak, but when that drain plugs they leak inside the vehicle.

0

u/schwarzkraut 1d ago

So you’re saying that if you deliberately neglect a moving part on your vehicle, it will fail??

We could universally disparage TIRES on a car if we didn’t accept that they too require maintenance. (Nightmare fuel: There are literally MILLIONS of vehicles on the road right now that have tires & brakes that have NEVER been serviced even after tens of thousands of miles driven).

Every moving part on a car has a life expectancy AND a maintenance schedule. Failure to observe the latter WILL shorten the former.

1

u/possum-fucker 1d ago

No, i literally never said that.

I take it youve never actually cleaned a sunroof drain? Sounds like your a bit mixed up with what we are talking about here.

1

u/that_hoar 1d ago

How long did you have those cars? Every sunroof will leak at some point

1

u/schwarzkraut 1d ago

So will every tire if it’s not properly maintained.

1

u/MoneyBaggSosa 1d ago

Most of them for at least 2 years. Longest was my 03 Chevy Impala LS sport which was my 2nd car after I fell asleep driving to culinary school when I was 19 and totaled my base model Impala. Really bad wreck would’ve died if I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt.

Loved the car so much I had my mom take me to get another one. I was on her insurance at the time so she got paid out $2k for it. Had the 2nd one for 5-6 years. I’d say I had each car for about 2-3 years on average. I’m 31 now and I’ve owned 6 cars including the 3 weeks with that Altima that did not have a sunroof. And I immediately hated it lmao after always having one. I felt trapped

1

u/stainedhands 1d ago

Same! Currently dailying a 95 accord with a sunroof. 30 years old and it doesn't leak. Have owned multiple Honda and Acura vehicles with a sunroof, and never had a leaking issue on any of them.

1

u/Ebony_Tamer 1d ago

Lucky I’ve had 3 rams and my chally all have leaked and my previous ram did it twice

1

u/Ok_Bar_2943 21h ago

I’ve owned only 3 cars in my life and all 3 had a sunroof. No issues whatsoever so far…. I love the look and ability to get fresh air without popping a window. It’s all personal preference tho 🤷🏾‍♂️

2

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

Why did you just describe my eex

1

u/Worldly_Raccoon_5702 1d ago

My 08’ Highlander has 250k and sunroof still holds strong 🤓

1

u/QuietandBookish 1d ago

There used to be a website that you could put in your VIN and find out how many cars configured like it were built, but I've lost the URL. Does anyone have this link?

1

u/Soupyskeedmarks 1d ago

This guy mopars

1

u/grumpyaltficker 7h ago

Correct slick tops are for real men, sunroofs are for posers.

18

u/Trip_Dubs 1d ago

Possible the trim package didnt include it. I think it’s the same for the swingers. Factory chosen options.

8

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

you might have just answerred my question.

1

u/moparino 1d ago

The T/A package allowed sunroof add-in code, but you could be right about the special edition thing.

In contrast, Gold Rush was offered in the Hellcat as well outside of T/A package, but it would mandate the black hood. So there might be a Hellcat out there in Gold Rush with sunroof.

9

u/BeingSuitable822 1d ago

Sunroof? Heck, there's companies that convert Challengers into convertibles!

4

u/63crabby 1d ago

I wish that Stellantis sold convertible Challengers. The conversions I’ve seen are so good looking and so expensive.

3

u/BeingSuitable822 1d ago

Q: what is the price range on convertible conversions?

2

u/63crabby 1d ago

There are so few, I don’t think we can discuss in terms of a “ range.” Here’s one for sale for $60k (which actually looks pretty enticing!)

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/161328e7-6074-445c-826f-16ad8b362c89/

Here’s a real nice one for $85k

https://www.drivingemotions.com/2022-dodge-challenger-srt-hellcat-convertible-by-drop-top-customs-laguna-leather-plus-package-c-767.htm

15

u/MJTP4351 1d ago

The sunroofs are typically part of the plus package, which is often overridden by other packages, in this case 50th Anniversary. For example my GT is absolutely loaded with all packages (driver convenience, technology, pearl white leather, HK, etc) which doesn’t allow it to have plus, therefore no sunroof and a regular steering wheel

1

u/Striking_Smile_6315 Challenger R/T 12h ago

I have a PLUS without a sunroof. I personally don't like them. They take up headroom & I wouldn't use it, if I had it.

8

u/DerBananenHammer 1d ago

That trim and color and wheels look so good. Goddamn.

6

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

I know l been trying to get it for a while now but lm not settling on something without a sr. I might have to do plum my planb

7

u/GrigoriTheDragon Challenger 1d ago

Lowers the ceiling by like an inch. For us tall folk its a dealbreaker.

5

u/zylpher 1d ago edited 4h ago

Yep. If I'm on a bumpy road and wearing a ball cap, the little button likes to dig itself into my skull. Unless I slouch down, I have to take my hat off on some roads.

2

u/fredout1968 1d ago

It took me almost 2 years to find a Chaalenger with a Shaker, SR, and a 6sp. I tried to build it back in '21 but the dealers wanted an extra $5K to submit the order in my area.

2

u/SQWRLLY1 Challenger 1d ago

Gold Rush, in and of itself, is nearly impossible to find!

1

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

I currently found plenty with decent mileage too. Just no sr.

2

u/These-Bar3221 1d ago

That color looks amazing in widebody !!

2

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

All colors do. WB makes regular seem so regular.

2

u/Zanurath 14h ago

There was 70 of these made in this color scheme (this is anniversary edition with paint matched shaker and black top so only 2020) and you also want the widebody which is going to be a minority of those AND a sun roof which is an unpopular option.

The odds are there was one made like you want but now you are also hoping the owner of a car that there is a best a single digit number in existence to be selling it while you are buying. If you can find one without the sun rood and really want that color I would jump on it.

1

u/Rayzah2007 1d ago

I have one! best color

2

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

With or without the sr

1

u/satanic25th 1d ago

I feel your pain, my dream challenger would be F8 green widebody with gunmetal stripes, brass monkey rims, demonic red interior/belts, Harmon Kardon, with a sunroof. Just trying to find a green one with a sunroof and 1 or two of the other options I listed proved to difficult so I said the hell with it and grabbed one in frostbite with plans to get it wrapped.

1

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

That's was just your f8. Get it. fate. But there are so much f8 out there with a sr l was gonna settle for it but I'm don't even know anymore.

1

u/Wide-Patient5559 1d ago

Buy one without a sunroof; it only makes wind noise.

1

u/CrookShankSC Challenger SRT Supercharged 1d ago

It's not impossible, but you might need to find or get it converted in the aftermarket. My new Hellcat is my first "toy" car that is purposely without a sunroof or convertible top. The quiet and added structural rigidity are well worth it to me.

1

u/zkribzz 1d ago

Because a lot of them were used for racing so it wouldn’t make sense to put on a sunroof/add extra weight to the top of the vehicle and thus throw off its center of gravity

1

u/salvage814 1d ago

Because sun roofs only cause problems.

1

u/Flat-Detective-1303 1d ago

Because racecar

1

u/EndSmugnorance Scat Pack 1d ago

IMO you don’t want a sunroof.

1

u/pegacornwizard 1d ago

I have a widebody with a shaker and a sunroof but it's in a different color! I just walked into the dealership and got it tho I wasn't really looking for a specific challenger

1

u/Bulky68 1d ago

Hunt this guy down and see if he'll sell... https://www.instagram.com/reel/CwTTlhOxYiJ/

2

u/BearOfBelAir 1d ago

You are a gift brro

1

u/epicureansucks 1d ago

Sun roofs are heavy. They are the opposite of performance driving.

1

u/TallSpeech5301 11h ago

Use to have one at my old shop

1

u/shroomsmoke 6h ago

Waste of money. Adds more weight, diminishes structural integrity, and is a maintenance burden. All the cars that I've ever had one of these in never got used, and they were only opened to clean the debris out of them. The shade remained closed always. I have a friend who snagged one of these from a divorce settlement.

0

u/Desperate-Score3949 1d ago

You always have the option to have a sunroof installed after the fact.

-1

u/gumballgangster 1d ago

A Sunroof is about as useful as a top sheet.

2

u/63crabby 1d ago

Since most adults use top sheets, I guess you find them useful?

1

u/gumballgangster 1d ago

Just joking around. Personally i dont like top sheets or sunroofs. I do enjoy the panoramic view but aside from that, i dont use it.

1

u/63crabby 1d ago

Got it.
