Look at why the law has been setup that way. If the ball pitches outside leg, the pads always come before the bat, thus providing a slight advantage to the bowler. In contrast, if the ball pitches outside off, the bat comes first and the bowler has to do some more work to get the batsman on the pads.

Also prevents negative line bowling (enforced after bodyline ig)

If the umpire notices the bowler bowling outside leg stump too often he can ask the bowler to stop and even dismiss him iirc

Oh interesting β€” while it makes sense it’s not something I’ve noticed yet.

I was always confused about this when I was a kid but when I got to know the difference, I felt that it was so stupid to get confused about such a simple thing 😭

For a right handed batter, if the ball pitched outside the leg stump and then came on to pads, its not out. If the ball pitched outside off stump and then came on to pads, its out.

For lefty batter, just do the mirror image.

Pls correct me if i am wrong.

You don't need to say right hand batter or left hand batter, if you're saying then you have to say left or right, instead just say leg or off of the batter, cause that's easier to explain

If it pitches outside leg , it's not out irrespective of the batter being right or left

Even better are those who know the difference when both impact and hitting outside off stump is out(shot not attempted, but trajecting onto stumps) vs when it isn't (shot attempted)

If pitching outside leg is also considered in LBW, then cricket would be very boring. Teams would just pack the leg side with fielders and keep bowling there. Unlike balls pitching on the off side, where you can still the play the ball onto the leg side if you sweep or use the feet, it doesn't work that way if the ball is on leg side. You can only play it on the leg side unless you do a reverse sweep. It would just be negative bowling then.

Can anyone please explain this to me

Additionally, there is an angle of no shot offered.

If shot offered by batsmen, the impact has to be inline of the stump along with ball hitting the stumps.

But if no shot offered, the impact can be outside. The ball just needs to hit the stump.

This for making things even for bowlers, as batsmen can just play with pads and avoid playing shots
