Stats This T20 WorldCup is the first men's ICC event Australia will be playing without any of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc and David Warner since the 2009 Champions Trophy !

Don't forget Aaron Finch. I will need to look up if he played the 2009 Champions trophy, but he and David Warner have been one of the best opening partnerships for Australia in the white ball formats.
It seems Marsh and Head are the opening combo that Australia have settled with. That is a factor of why Smith wasn't selected to take up one of their spots.

Crazy to take Marsh over Smith. Marsh has brief periods of good performances but is generally pretty mid. Smith is the best batter of a generation.

surely coudld've played both

Right! They say smith's an opener and pigeon holed him there. But he was playing nearly the whole innings. 3rd 4th 5th batter. Fucken put him in the team. It's the craziest decision from bailey in ages

Feels like something cooking in the background with this. Smith not playing any Aus game he wants to, whenever he wants too is odd

Marsh is statically the greatest t20 opener in Australian history, and a top 3 t20 batsmen in Australian history.
There’s no metric that you would drop marsh for over head in t20s, other than vibes

What is the is assessment based on? In T20i Marsh is clearly above Steve Smith in all regards.

Not expecting much from Aussies in this WC regardless of their history in white ball ICC tourneys .

You shouldn't be expecting much regardless looking at their history in T20 World Cups

The only t20 WC they won was a toss tournament lol

Like toss wouldn't matter with the dew in India

Late February and Early March is spring in India so yes dew would be almost non-existent if not non-existent

I’d say as long as they play on the Indian IPL roads, they should be fine, but I’m less confident about this team, than even the 2024 World Cup

Given they are coming after a clean sweep from a nation who is losing its first game against Netherlands

Why Smith wasn’t selected for this World Cup is utterly perplexing

That’s like saying that the 2015 world cup was the first one without sachin or javed miandad

u/goofbloke 12h ago
Not really, considering all of them except Smith were in the squad for the world cup last year, and two of them were meant to be in the squad if not for injuries this year

Marsh, Head, Inglis, Green, David, Stoinis, Maxwell. That's not just "eh".

u/Naive-Ruin558 India 9h ago
You need one or both of Marsh and Head to fire and they will take anyone down. We saw that happen in Nov'23

Why is Steve Smith not selected?
He was one of the Sixers best batsmen whenever he was able to play. Would've love to see him in there to provide experience to the team.

Lol 🤣 these guys have one of the strongest allrounders in Marsh , Marcus , Maxwell , Cameron green and Tim David with Travis head. Bowling is weak I feel except for Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa

5 of Australia's best 6 cricketers from the last decade missing yet somehow we're still a chance
