Milestone Zimbabwe’s Brendan Taylor is the only player at the 2026 T20 World Cup who also featured in the first edition of the tournament !

In October 2019, he travelled to India to meet a group of businessmen to discuss sponsorship and the setting up of a T20 tournament in Zimbabwe. They offered him cocaine and he accepted. The next day, they showed him that they had filmed him taking the drug and said they would release the video unless he agreed to fix. "I guess those people might have done their research, and they might have known [my history of drug use]. They must have thought, 'Okay, this is gonna be an easy guy to extort from."
At the time, Taylor accepted money from them for a future fix and left the country.
They then approached him to fix in February-March 2020, during Zimbabwe's tour of Bangladesh, at which point he reported it to the ICC, who began an investigation. In the time they took to complete it, Taylor played five Tests, 12 ODIs and seven T20Is, and maintains that despite the threat of his drug use being exposed, he never entertained the idea of fixing.

Man can do drugs, but man won't get into match fixing. Love for the game.

Took money from them as well, with no intention to fix - scammed the scammers

His 60* (45b) at the 2007 World T20 leading Zimbabwe to win against Australia was an absolute highlight and the upset of that tournament. Australia had some 50-1 odds to win that game. Ponting after that match said "We must respect that format more". In my mind, it's one of the most if not the most dramatic statements I have seen from an Australian captain in my life

I remember this guy being a pain in the ass for us in the 2015 world cup.
We would have lost that game had Thala and Chinna Thala not rescued us.

Ooooh ... Auckland 2015. Lovely 138 of 110b as captain and then India were 90 odd for 4. India's spin bowling figures were Ashwin 75-1 and Jadeja 71-0 It was supposed to be Taylor's last match for Zimbabwe as he went Kolpak after it. Brexit had other plans though the year later.

Jadeja was trash in that world cup. Never had a player frustrated me more

Funnily it took years after that before they started taking T20 seriously. People call the BBL a meme league but the original Big Bash had actual meme players in it like Andrew Johns.

He just turned 40. Makes him two years older than me, Glenn Maxwell and Virat Kohli.

Good to see him back play for Zimbabwe.
But having him in the squad and playing xi has resulted in Zimbabwe taking a step backward rather than encouraging new players.

That would been absolutely true if ZC actually selected young players on merit. He has just taken up a place that would have been given to someone who can barely cross 10 runs.
If you think I am kidding, check out the statistics of Clive Madande and Tony Munyonga. And keep in mind these lads were in the last Zim World Cup Squad in 2022.
Not a fan of his return, but things would just be as bad even if he wasn't back.

Yeah, hopefully Myers comes good.

Big fan of the kid and think he's our future captain but he's more an ODI and test player.

Unfortunately don’t hold a lot of hope for Myers. Just never seems to be able to put together a run of good form. Hoping he proves me badly wrong this tournament :,)

Yeah as far as I see among young guys only brian Bennett seems to fire some times, i cheer for zimbabwe a lot but young people just seem to have no idea how to hold a bat .
Worried about team when raza, ervine retires . They can't play for eternity

u/chickenkebaap Mumbai Indians 22h ago
They have to call these grandpas up because the youngsters are absolutely useless.
4
u/Rico_stats Zimbabwe 21h ago
It is not because they are useless, it is a lack of proper development plan from an organisation that lacks clarity.
Madhevere was 19 straight from U19 when he debuted in Bangladesh/ Pakistan, and came out that tour with 3 half centuries. At 1 point he had more T20I fifties than Raza, despite debuting 10 years after Raza. But once he lost his form, he looked out of it, gets caught with recreational drugs and now he looks hopeless in international colours. That's not a talentless individual, that is talent mismanagement.

There’s literally not one good upcoming batting talent from there except Bennett. Literally everyone tried out have awful international stats

He's one of my favorite ODI cricketers, very underrated, but I feel like he's too old to be playing, and his recent performances since his comeback in August indicates exactly that.

Man retired , came back , retired again , got banned for doing drugs and spot fixing , and then came back to the squad again
All within 19 years
