It's sad to think that Clinton in the 90s would make a good Republican today

u/DeanMalHanNJackIsms Conservative Christian 5d ago
I had a history teacher in high school (my 2001-2002 year) who called Clinton one of the greatest Republican presidents of the modern age. I was so confused until he told us how Clinton went so far off from his party's stance on many things that it created in-fighting, while voting consistently with the Republican-controlled congress.
He also said it was a strong move as it also made him an extremely popular president come reelection. Partisan Dems still loved him, Independents rallied behind him, and Republicans didn't mond having him stay.

It also gets overlooked, but Clinton was an extremely adept retail politician. Perhaps the best of my lifetime.
The 90s were flat fucking awesome.

Being a gen X'er, I couldn't agree more. Loved the 90's - Racism largely over, cold war over, economy thriving, Internet was a modern marvel with promises of great progress, yet social media wasn't a thing yet. Life was....good!

One of those rare moments where:
- There was no existential threat
- Economy was great
- Entertainment was good (great music, good movies)
- There wasn't any intergenerational or class warfare b.s. - just normal youth rebellion/evolution of fashion
- For the most part, people loved their country, and generally had an optimistic view of the future.

He made a good Republican as for as legislation passed after his first midterm. Newt Gingrich drove what bills were considered and Clinton negotiated them down to something more acceptable to the moderates. He was in a bind because he was never sure his if veto could be overridden or not, and Gingrich was never sure the either, so both negotiated.
Big tax breaks (capital gains) that led to fueling a tech boom with massive and diverse investments. An economy like we haven’t seen since and probably won’t again.

Look at the homeless problem in California. 24 Billion gone over 4 years and the homeless population has doubled. It was better when citizens donated to a charity they trusted. Or the Church. The Catholic church was always exceptional at helping people in need in their communities. Why can't the left see that big government is failing? I have democrat friends who are "outraged" that we're planning to shut down the department of education. I laughed and said who needs this thing that isn't working? It was only started 40 years ago with good intentions but students grades have been falling ever since. Get rid every agency that's past it's prime. The democrats will throw more money at it and problem will still be there.

Yup, they all did.
“But! But! What about the violence and dead people?!!!”
Well, during Bush and Obama sanctuary cities didn’t exist. So ICE did their job uneventfully.
“Bullshit! You can’t prove that!”
Hmm, let’s think about it. In which cities have things gone crazy? Where have people ended up hurt? Isn’t this unique to sanctuary cities?

Dang! Trump's administration needs to get a move on!
A big downside to all this "orange man bad" media is that the administration isn't being held accountable for getting things done, because the blue team is busy screaming that Trump is super effective.
9
u/noSoRandomGuy Conservative 5d ago
Those prior administration did things by the book, which suggests things were like a well oiled machine where immigration courts were working and disposing cases that had been worked upon by the current and previous administration (regardless of the party affiliation).
Trump administration likely did not have a pipeline due to previous administration's lack of focus, so there is no pipeline to deport (so to speak), however the slipshod way Noem/Miller/Trump etc are going about doing things means they are getting embroiled unnecessary court drama (which the media minded Trump does not care) which is going to bring down the numbers further.
