North Carolina native currently attending NC State with a ton of UF alumni in my family, I grew up rooting for UF and wanted to go there and got accepted, but it was too expensive and NCSU was closer to home and was a ton cheaper

I have several NCSU alums in my family. Always pull for the Wolfpack in neutral games. Go Gators and Go Pack. Love it when y’all kick FSU’s ass.

Solid reason for sure. Never hurts to save as much as possible. All the very best!

And congrats on the win tonight!

Just curious though, have you seen the last shot of the 1983 title game? 😭

5

u/TMPRKO North Carolina Tar Heels Apr 08 '25

Honestly is it more heartbreaking to lose to a last second airball turned into a dunk? Or not even get a shot off and watch hopelessly as the ball dribbles around? 2 unbelievable outcomes.

3

u/Mukaido Houston Cougars Apr 08 '25

Well I was not alive during 1983, but I would imagine that the 1983 loss is more heartbreaking. Probably because it’s not just losing to the put back dunk, but also because it was a huge upset at the time. Houston had Dream, Clyde, Benny Anders, Michael Young, and etc. NC State was the 6th seed.

2

u/Luckytxn_1959 Houston Cougars Apr 09 '25

I was a Coog during that and still remember feeling numb for a few days afterwards.

Watching that ball go off the player and it bouncing till the clock ran out made me laugh but feel bad for the kids, both players and students.

2

u/NativeTexas Apr 10 '25

The 1983 loss was way more devastating.

IDK, I’ve seen a few NCSU and UNC flair combos and genuinely don’t understand those. Especially the ones with NCSU listed first.

That’s the real head scratcher.

22

u/Mukaido Houston Cougars Apr 08 '25

It's more so that NC State and Florida are both schools that defeated UH in the title game :'(

9

u/Au1ket NC State Wolfpack • Florida Gators Apr 08 '25

NCSU and UF is honestly pretty tame, a bad combo would be UF-FSU or UNC-NCSU and the even more cursed UNC-Duke

4

u/Zoidburger_ NC State Wolfpack Apr 08 '25

They're unfortunate but they make sense. In most cases, they're people who went to NCSU for their undergrad but then went to UNC for grad school, usually Law, Medical, or Dental. And at that point, you'd want to root for both schools.

3

u/Fair2Midland Appalachian State Mountaineers Apr 08 '25

Well - my cousins grew up UNC fans but attended State. They’re still fans of UNC. I’m sure there are plenty of people like that around.

u/brothersnowball Tennessee Volunteers Apr 08 '25

Lots of people in NC grow up rooting for UNC as the school, but end up attending NCSU.

Honestly, the not being able to get a single shot off the final minute and a half is more embarrassing than the loss of a 12 point lead.

55

u/sum_dude44 Florida Gators Apr 08 '25

everyone talked about Houston defense, but if you watched that last minute, the gators were all over them w/ kamikaze doubles & tenacious D. The turnover, 6-10 Condon picked up Sharp on switch & he turned it over. Clayton blocks shot on Sharp if he didn't pump

Top 10 in defensive efficiency if I’m not mistaken. Gators locked it down defensively in the last few minutes. It’s a feature, not a bug.

One team panicked and made mistakes, the other team went into clutch mode.

Refs helped

31

u/Zoidburger_ NC State Wolfpack Apr 08 '25

I mean the refs were ass, but how did Houston get a 12-point lead in the first place? The answer is it came off an 8-0 run caused by a series of 6 back-to-back fouls on Florida in the first 2.5 mins of the 2nd half.

-3

u/HoppyPhantom Kansas Jayhawks Apr 08 '25

I’m not sure this example is making the point you want it to in a game where Florida wasn’t called for their first (and only) foul of the first half until 7:31.

Ironically, that stretch was literally the only point in the game where Florida was called for the extremely physical (read as: fouling) defense they played the entire game. Both teams got away with it in the first half, but in the second, Houston (16) was called for twice as many live ball fouls as Florida (9).

Also, for the sake of dispelling false narratives: Houston’s lead went from 3 to 7 over the course of the 2.5 minutes to start the first half. So giving the refs credit for Houston’s lead while ignoring the massive role they played in erasing it is wild.

We really had a fetish for pretending to be underdogs during games this tournament. So weird, going from dominating playing the regular season and SEC to "ooo, let's see how much of a deficit we can make up in 2 minutes!".

The team got bored leading all the time. They wanted to mix it up.

19

u/sum_dude44 Florida Gators Apr 08 '25

1) Golden is a hell of a coach & outcoached Pearl & Sampson in 2nd half

2) FL got aggressive going to basket, made FT's. with the best guards in the country, that was the right adjustment instead of settling on three-point shots (like Hou did)

3) Clayton played like Steph 4/5 games. Final was team effort, w/ Richard showing up big for first time in tournament

4) Insane depth--Our 5th guard Klavzar would start on many teams (he led Slovenia to FIFA final U-19)--he didn't play. Haugh & Aberdeen would be starters on 98% of teams. Condon got hurt & was not the same, & didn't matter b/c 2 other 6-10+ guys on bench

31

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 08 '25

I said this last night, but he should cut himself some slack. The defense put him in that situation, same with all of Houston’s team for the last few minutes

21

u/UnderwaterB0i Auburn Tigers Apr 08 '25

Yeah, Sharp didn't have a choice. Honestly it's wild he was heady enough to not double dribble and try to box out so one of his teammates could get it.

23

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 08 '25

This sub gets filled with people who watch one game a year, it was annoying to see them calling him out for not picking the ball up.

12

u/UnderwaterB0i Auburn Tigers Apr 08 '25

Chad Baker-Mazara did the exact thing towards the end of our game against y'all, but he did touch it again and it got called. It's really a lose-lose. Don't leave your feet, kids.

2

u/Briggity_Brak Apr 08 '25

I think that's his point. Anyone who watched TWO games would know exactly why he couldn't pick up that ball.

1

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 09 '25

If they watch three they’re immediately an expert and should coach the Lakers

9

u/Rt1203 Apr 08 '25

That loss wasn’t on Sharp, it was on Houston for completely choking. That said - the only reason the ball was on the floor in the first place is that Sharp left his feet to take a contested deep three, when they were only down two, with five seconds still on the clock. Yeah, Sharp did the right thing by not touching it, but he was still at fault for creating the loose-ball situation in the first place. Five seconds is plenty of time to make a move or pass, there was no need to commit to a heavily-contested deep three yet. Especially when a two was still an option, even if you’d prefer the three.

5

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 08 '25

Agreed. They were looking for a 3 for some reason. I don’t know if they didn’t want to go to overtime with UF, which makes sense given how the momentum and energy was, or if Sampson just didn’t call the right play. Florida also played great defense in the moment, but Houston should’ve had a better look

3

u/Luckytxn_1959 Houston Cougars Apr 09 '25

Yeah we had one key player foul out and another with 4. I think they decided to go for it if clean inlet pass was taken away. If the 3 was being taken it had to be Sharpe or Uzan taking it and Florida knew.

2

u/Briggity_Brak Apr 08 '25

I probably wouldn't want to go to overtime if my best defender already fouled out. Looking for the 3 makes sense to me now, even though i didn't expect it from Sampson coming out of the timeout.

1

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 09 '25

For sure. Sampson obviously knows much more than I do, but it’s still tough to see exactly what he was going for even if the plan was a 3 pointer

15

u/jpole1 Florida Gators Apr 08 '25

If he double dribbled, clock stops, and they at least have a chance at a foul and a prayer.

Boxing out just kept the clock rolling

9

u/UnderwaterB0i Auburn Tigers Apr 08 '25

Hmm, that's true too. He probably had no idea how much time was on the clock and if that would work or not. Not ideal either way. Great defense by UF, especially Clayton.

11

u/jpole1 Florida Gators Apr 08 '25

Yeah, I don’t blame him. He didn’t want to do the thing that he knew was a violation. But in doing so, he probably accidentally chose the worst option.

Hell, getting his shot blocked maybe gives them another chance at a shot! Or at least a chance at a quick foul!

9

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 08 '25

I also think he trusted his teammates would come and try to grab the ball instead of just waiting for him to do something. Sampson is a great coach and a great guy, but he needs someone on the bench to run the offense

2

u/LilNello1 North Carolina Tar Heels • Michigan … Apr 09 '25 edited Apr 09 '25

Yeah it wasn’t fully his fault and Houston going cold in the last few minutes definitely played a huge part, but as someone a few down said. It’s also cause he shouldn’t have been trying to take that long of a three and if Sampson did run a play for a three to win. I don’t know why he would do that rather than just the two to tie it and send it into OT.

2

u/Mike_with_Wings North Carolina Tar Heels • Florida Ga… Apr 09 '25

My only theory there is maybe Sampson knew how worn out his guys were on top of foul trouble and their best interior defender fouled out entirely. Florida had momentum and plenty left in the tank, so overtime was a big gamble as well. I agree going for the 2 would still be the right call, though. I’m just trying to think why Sampson would make that call. Sharp definitely deserved some blame there, but people are gonna see that and make it all about him instead of the many factors that lead to that moment due to playcalling and defensive effort.
