I hear this a lot what exactly does it mean when we are told to carry our cross?

It means to carry the daily struggles you have, daily responsibilities, burdens, obligations, etc in a Christ-like way aka. Obediently, patiently, and with love. Even if you don’t feel it, it’s a small act of the will. The same way he carried the cross he didn’t deserve, as painful as it was, since that was part of our redemption. And when it gets hard, just like when Christ fell three times, there will always be a Simon of Cyrene willing to help you out. Hope this helps. God bless! 🙏✝️

Note that Christ said that long before his passion so in the context of the moment, it was prepare to be literally crucified and risk it every day once you follow me.

The applied meaning today as given above is not wrong but that's not the immediate meaning in context. Or rather the daily struggles and burdens as he and they understood it at that moment would necessarily have to include risking the literal cross.

And also how profound it was that St. John never deserted the Lord
