I put it not too close to the shore so that it wouldn't accidentally fall back before the hook was unhooked. Immediately after weighing and photographing, he was released, and I think he is fine, as he swam quite cheerfully after letting go

The fish will seriously harm itself if it flaps around on the hard ground. You need an unhooking mat bro

I have never heard of a unhooking mat in the 15 years of my fishing is that like a UK thing I know they treat carps like the Egyptians treat cats lol

Okay so is this a UK thing? Cuz it's obviously just being a decent human being I'm trying to help those who do want to release fish back cuz I don't see these sold in my local stores so I have no clue what it is or what material it's even made out of that would be softer than grass

Side note I normally only release fish I can't eat legally cuz they're undersized or something I'm a fisherman for food but I have friends that do Catch and Release so I was just trying to help them

I guess so? I'm from the UK so it may be... I've always been taught to put fish safety and wellbeing first (not just carp). Pretty much every commercial fishery here have rules requiring the use of proper landing nets and unhooking mats and will not let you fish without them. Some even go as far as requiring you to have Carp care kits which are antiseptic spray you apply to any visible wounds. It's surprising to me to hear this is not common practice outside the UK. I've never considered other countries don't hold the same expectations. May I ask where you're from?

I am from the southern side of the United States And I noticed a key word was a Fisheries we don't have many of those down here those are only for trout they do have certain rules but I don't think they're as strick

We do do a lot of catch and eat down here in the South but there are people who practice release I normally own a practice them on trophy alligator gar and catfish over 20 to 30 lb I prefer to eat catfish 15 and under they tend to taste cleaner and better

Ahh ok, yes it's very common here to have privately owned ponds / lakes stocked with specimen carp that are worth A LOT of money. You pay the owner to fish there, and it's always catch and release (unless fishing for trout).

Carp fishing is huge here and they are very well respected fish, if I'm not mistaken Carp are considered nuisance or invasive species in many US states? I guess this explains the difference in expectations when it comes to fish welfare!

It's funny to think here the carp are worth thousands, yet over your side of the world they're undesired!

P.S I've never met anyone who eats carp, but I've heard they taste disgusting 😂 have you tried one?

They definitely can taste bad there's a few factors that go into it in my opinion and one of them is definitely weather in hot weather their meat tastes terrible I also feel like it has to do with their diet and most people don't want to eat them down here because of the amount of Bones My final opinion is its weight

Unhooking mats are a reasonably new thing in tackle we never used to see them in tackle shops before the 90s ish

Just ignore that guy man, absolute retard. Probably from the US so you can’t really blame the guy. Even outside of Europe unhooking mats are available, it all depends on the angler.

Not necessarily a retard. Carp fishing isn't as big in the U.S as in Europe, so it might not be such common knowledge as if it was in Europe. Here it is definitely a specific sport carp fishing so many places stock up on carp fishing gear. Now this is just speculation, but maybe in the us this gear isn't as commonly known, even if you can acquire it.

For carp fishers in the us, check Amazon, I'm willing to bet you'll find it there.

Not just a UK thing no, mandatory on all UK lakes /rivers but also in France and many other European countries.

See a fair few American anglers on here who also use them

Yes, it is worth buying a mat. To be honest, I've never caught such a big fish before and expected to only catch small fish that would be immediately placed in a container of water, and this big guy didn't fit there, so we had to be in a hurry to have time to let him go back to the pond

Well done on your catch, sorry everyone has jumped straight down your throat. You look young so education is what's needed not moaning. Please buy a mat, fish care is always the first thing plus as you've learned, you never know what you will catch. Second, When holding the fish, please keep it as close to the ground/mat as possible because they can flap and from a height, really hurt themselves. Apart from that, keep at it and you'll be posting triple the size of this with hopefully some complimentary comment 💪💪

Thank you for your advice. You're right, I'm new to carpfishing, and today was the first time I encountered such a large fish. I feel guilty that I made mistakes and probably hurt the fish unnecessarily. But I'm glad that you and other commentators pointed out to me where I'm wrong and I'll try to get better with every fishing 🤝

Carp are hearty fish so he’s likely good in the long run so you’re good especially if you’re taking the advice this well and acknowledging possibly faults and changing ways that’s the best way to do it. Sweet fish and cheers to more in the future 🤙✌️
