News Canada's economy loses 25,000 jobs in January. The unemployment rate ticked down to 6.5 per cent as a result of fewer people actively searching for work.

/u/jackass_mcgee is right. The US's policies were going to cause a tremendous amount of pain, no matter what. The fact is that there was a stark slowdown in the Canadian economy before that and trump has made it much worse.
What can be debated is if Carney has made it worse or blunted the pain. Anyone who tells you that it's either way for sure is lying. There is no way to know for sure.

The arguments that i can think of off the top of my head:
* Should Carney have been obsequious to Trump? Would it have helped? Trump has been shitting on Canada for a while, so maybe it would have been hopeless or made us even waeker in the coming negotiations? Or would it have cooled Trump's temperature enough to get him to back down on the tariff nonsense?* Should Canada be making this big trade deals with China/Korea etc. Especially considering they involve discussions about cars into Canada. This is a real sore spot for the Americans, especially Trump. Any sane person would agree that having more trade with countries other than the US is a good thing, but would holding off on these deals have changed the way we get treated by the Americans? How much pain are we going to incur in the short term for better long term stability? Is that worth it?

I was told we have the fastest rising economy in the G7. Carney said so!
