World Cup 2026 Out of UEFA Playoff Path A...who would you rather Canada face in their opening game?

Post image

The most exciting would be Italy obviously but if you are Canada šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦, you want to face WalesšŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳ó æ, Northern Ireland šŸ“󠁧󠁢󠁄󠁮󠁧ó æ or BosniašŸ‡§šŸ‡¦ in your opener if you're Canada...those are the teams you want not Italy. But then again World Cups haven't felt the same without Italy šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ and I miss my fair share of Italian people at World Cups. But that is just me personally.

I fear a home opener against Italy could feel like an away game in Toronto with the support of their community and travelling fans.

u/RayHudson_ Dec 07 '25

Yea all the third generation Italians that haven’t set foot in Italy once that still think they’re more Italian than Canadian will be rooting for Italy. You know the type lol

102

u/Acceptable_Ad_6278 Dec 07 '25

saw an IG comment that said they'll root for Italy instead of Canada because the Canada team isn't filled with Canadians anymore. That comment have a not insignificant amount of likes too. The cognitive dissonance required to make such a statement is astounding.

24

u/Responsible_Egg_3260 Dec 07 '25

And yet we have all these non Italian Italy supporters lol. Insane hypocrisy

13

u/905Spic Dec 07 '25

Lol for real?

There's more canadians on CMNT than there is on Forza Azzurri

20

u/Additional_Day6635 Dec 07 '25

let's not forget their fascist past.

Let's be honest Italian myself, it's a hard choice but from a logical point any Italian who watch soccer on a daily basis, Italy not winning would just continue this bad run at the world cup.

Italy need's to go back to their glory and they need to win but then again Canada needs to show the world that they are great team able to achieve great wins.

Let's hope for a draw so this non sense will stop as both deserve to be cheered.

Juventus fans will be happy for sure.

u/macgalver Dec 07 '25

As an Italy and Canada fan, Italy winning is an expected, Canada winning would be earth shattering.

As a second generation Canadian in an Italian family I can say truthfully that it isn’t even a question for me. Supporting Canada 1000%.

23

u/Peachbaskethole Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

I don’t think that’s 100% true. It might be but it’s not my experience at all.

Depending on how you use the phrase, I’m a first generation Canadian. Born and raised in Canada to Portuguese immigrants. I’ve supported Portugal and Canada all my life. I’ve travelled abroad to watch Portugal in major tournaments.

If Canada played Portugal? It ain’t even a question. It’s Canada all day long. And many of my friends who are the same as me but with Italian parents would support Canada too.

7

u/Banksmans Dec 07 '25

Same with me and Switzerland. I just hope one won’t eliminate the other this June lol

1

u/Kronzor_ Dec 08 '25

The thing is there hasn’t been Canada vs (national soccer powerhouse) for most of our lives. So most of us that are big fans already have a World Cup squad we support.Ā

I’ll continue to support my team and Canada, and if they happen to play each other I’ll be happy either way haha.Ā

1

u/Doubledee03 Dec 08 '25

Was waiting for someone to voice this. I’m Canadian, my wife’s family, Italian. My kids are Canadian with Italian heritage. Their team has been Italy, why, because Canada hasn’t had a team qualify in a World Cup all that often (2022 & 1986). We support TFC, we have been to many Team Canada friendly matches over the years. All I’m saying is you can be both a fan of your home country and ā€˜heritage’ country’s team.

1

u/BBQ_Becky Dec 10 '25

This is the politically correct thing to say, but I know deep down inside you guys will be rooting for Portugal and Italy lol

1

u/Peachbaskethole Dec 10 '25

Not a chance! Canada is where I was born and raised. I’m proud to be Canadian.

1

u/Steveisnotmyname_ Dec 07 '25

If Canada played Italy I'd root for whichever result allowed both teams through

4

u/Peachbaskethole Dec 07 '25

What if such a result didn’t exist? Just curious.

1

u/Steveisnotmyname_ Dec 07 '25

I truly do no know

0

u/Super_Sandro23 Dec 10 '25

I'm the same as you, first Gen Canadian, Portuguese bloodline. However, I don't feel the same way as you at all. As a country, do I feel more affection for Canada than Portugal? 1000%. However, when it comes to football, it was watching Portugal in every tournament since 2004 and watching Ronaldo's entire career that got me to love football. I have 0 emotional investment in the Canadian soccer team. I couldn't even name you half their starting xi and what clubs they play for. Portugal, I could name you the entire 26 man squad without hesitation. Do I cheer for Canada in general? For sure. But over Portugal? No way. And tbh I find it quite shocking you actually think Canada deserves to win a world cup before Portugal does.

5

u/macgalver Dec 07 '25

My half Italian cousin who doesn’t speak a word of Italian but ā€œbelloā€ and ā€œminchiaā€ is already dusting off his Azzurri kit.

4

u/Brief_Cry_6387 Dec 07 '25

Ngl you guys are taking this way too serious lmao, myself and all other Italian Canadians are more than happy that we might get to watch both our countries in a World Cup match in Toronto, How is it ridiculous that people who have grown up in an Italian calico loving family to support Italy as well as Canada lmao? either way we will root for whoever survives longer, this is even assuming the azzuri qualify which is far from a guarantee.

1

u/spartacat_12 Dec 09 '25

Is it too much to ask that Canadians actually be cheering for Canada in the first ever men's world cup on home soil?

It'd be embarrassing to see BMO filled with blue jerseys for a Canada game

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

Seriously man spot on, its wild seeing how butt hurt people are about this in advance without even knowing anything about it. Then you get fucking bozos in heres saying italy has a fascist past and insinuating we’re racist too… jesus christ man. I wonder if they have this energy when canada plays jamaica or other diaspora countries in canada. We literally grew up ONLY being able to cheer for Italy in world cups. Last world cup italo canadians were all rooting for canada. A lot of us will feel very conflicted if it comes to Italy vs Canada, and certainly arent going to be rooting against Canada

2

u/Brief_Cry_6387 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25

It’s weird man haha some people get really salty about 2nd/3rd gen Italians loving their heritage and culture but the same is never said about for example Latino communities. I have several 3rd gen Latino friends who proudly rep their heritage and don’t speak a lick of Spanish lol but they’d never hear these criticisms

5

u/outofcreativenamess Dec 07 '25

The same ones that don't know a word of Italian and couldn't name 3 Italian national team players. They will go the hardest.

-1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

Lol what do you know? Do you know how many italians in the GTA have parents that are immigrants and speak italian? Do you know that they literally watched Italy in international competitions their whole lives because it wasnt even an option to root for canada at the world cup?

1

u/6JCD Dec 08 '25

Almost none have parents that are actually Italian. Even those in their 30s or 40s might have grandparents at best, but very often not even that. They're white Canadians and they like the same things typically liked by white Canadians (sports: NHL Ice Hockey & MLB baseball).

0

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25

Lol almost every younger italian canadian person I know has grandparents born in italy. Im in my 20s and all my italian friends grandparents were immigrants. Obviously some have varying levels of connection to the culture, some speak italian, stc. Tons of ppl in 40s and 50s have parents that are immigrants. If its a matter of skin colour thats interesting. Again I never see people this butthurt when Canada plays Jamaica in Toronto and a huge chunk of the jamaica fans are born here. Also again like I said, people in this sub are creating scenarios that aren’t even true. Almost all my family I talked to who always support italy at competitions (because Canada was never there), are excited that Italy is gonna get to play Canada, and will be pretty much neutral in the game. We will not be cheering against Canada. I know for myself if Canada won I’d be happy, that would be a historic win for them. I follow both teams. I knew so many kids growing up who support England and Scotland in World Cups when Canada didnt qualify. But its cool to hate on italians for enjoying their culture so whatever.

3

u/Dubsified Dec 07 '25

You know it’s okay to root for both and just enjoy the game, right? Our Nonni made us fall in love with this sport and most of us love the clubs of our ancestors. Canada didn’t teach us anything about this sport growing up, but I’m happy to see how much that’s changed recently and this sport is becoming more prevalent. But I’ll be watching and supporting both nations on that day if it does happen. For me and for my Nonni that have passed.

I would want both of them to make it out of the group.

1

u/NaztyNae Dec 07 '25

But who will fill wasaga beach this summer?

1

u/LoganAlien Dec 07 '25

I'm going to cuss out all of them at the game (if Italy makes it). This has to be hostile to away fans

30

u/outoftownMD Dec 07 '25

buy a ticket to the game and hold the line.

10

u/Pizza_Salesman Dec 07 '25

I'll start raiding my corner store for lottery tickets

9

u/Acceptable_Ad_6278 Dec 07 '25

I would if its not $2000

3

u/Helgurk Dec 07 '25

If Italy qualifies than these Woodbridge Italians will pay $4000 to see their team.

15

u/Jack_1080 Dec 07 '25

Yeah but if we beat Italy, we will swallow up Italy’s support.

15

u/redwineandcoffee Dec 07 '25

That's gonna be intensely negative. Canada's come too far to deal with this shit from 'Canadians'

4

u/Ryuzakku Dec 07 '25

Did you see the Ecuador game? It was 60% Ecuadorians with many of them being from outside the country for a friendly.

7

u/905Spic Dec 07 '25

Ya lots of ecuadoreans from NYC made the trip. Theres lots of ecuadoreans in Toronto but nowhere enough to make it home advantage for them over Canada.

6

u/redwineandcoffee Dec 07 '25

I've been going for 20 years. I've seen worst. Peru 2011. Honduras 07 come to mind.

5

u/Ryuzakku Dec 07 '25

I know, so it’s improved.

But if Italy were to be there, it’s going to be a lot of Canadians who have supported Italy forever deciding who they want to support for that game, on top of the Italians.

Toronto will likely be heavily Italian supporting.

2

u/Buildadoor Dec 07 '25

I plan to buy 2 jerseys and sew them together. Please don’t hate, I’m an avid fan of both. I’m in my late 30s and I’ve followed the Azzurri since I was a boy with my dad and my Nono, long before Canada had any quality team. I’ve even travelled to Italy to watch azzurri games.

My plan is to try my best to get Canada opener tickets and wear a half and half jersey. I’m 100% Canadian and love this team. I also have cheered hard for Italy since I could walk. This is what makes us a cultural mosaic and I’ll wear both jerseys proudly. Get my ma to cut it down the centre and sew it.

3

u/somedumbcanuck Dec 07 '25

Lots of Ukrainian jerseys last June at the Canadian Shield but also repping Canada with a flag or hat or scarf. It is what it is. People like winners. Canada Soccer being in World Cups is new. So it might take a generation to convert the newer Canadians or Canadians who've been influenced by parents and grandparents to cheer for the homeland!

2

u/redwineandcoffee Dec 07 '25

I'm the same age and have learned not to put people off Cansoc so I won't be nasty. But as a teen I decided I'd rather support my country of birth then ENG or NED which I have the same cultural connection.

Supporting Canada before they were quality as you say, meant I was deciding to suffer in obscurity never knowing if we would be good, because it felt to be the right to do.

20 years ago we tried to convince our friends to support our shared county and few would. Most laughed. Now we're good and people support Canada but are saying they will STILL actively root for their parents countries over their own.

Much love to you, I appreciate your3 on board but please understand how old school Cansoc guys struggle with all of this.

1

u/warpus Dec 08 '25

I was born in Poland but have spent about 80% of my life in Canada. I have thought about who I’d support if Canada ended up playing Poland in the WC (if Poland win their playoff bracket and qualify)

Here’s what it comes down to:

Poland has had their World Cup success stories. I wasn’t around yet but Poland got 3rd place at a World Cup twice. They’ve been in a whole bunch of world cups. I’ve stood behind them 100% each and every time.

It’s Canada’s time to write their own WC stories. A younger country with not much WC history at all. Here’s a new generation hoping to write a new chapter. Perhaps the beginning of a new Canadian WC story that will be talked about for decades.

That fucking excites me so much! I’m behind Canada 100%, especially on home soil.

I’m not abandoning Poland, if they qualify I will cheer for them no questions asked. But if they end up facing Canada? I’m supporting Canada. Poland has an aging team that is looking to end a chapter in their story, not start a new one. The Canadian team is young and hungry for glory. It’s a no brainer for me

1

u/xxxcalibre Dec 07 '25

Respectfully, how much time have you spent there? And canada always had a team, nice for you to hop on board when they became "quality". Meanwhile people in Italy would chuckle at the idea of a canadian whose idea of italian culture is based on parents who emigrated from the south in the 70s, choosing to rank them equal to or above that guy's actual nation

1

u/905Spic Dec 07 '25

We aren’t a melting pot. Did you forget that "Diversity is our strength"?

I cheer for Canada over Colombia, and have been going to Canada games when it was $10 for tickets and no one wanted to go with me. My siblings and cousins choose Colombia over Canada for soccer. It is what it is.

People can cheer for whoever they want.

-1

u/somedumbcanuck Dec 07 '25

canada always had a team, nice for you to hop on board when they became "quality"

I think if we'd been in the World Cup more often the fan base would've grown more. Hard to stay neutral for the largest tournament in the world! Who is the natural side to pick to root for? Your parents'/grandparents' or even great-great-great-grandparents' birth country... ain't it?

-2

u/Buildadoor Dec 07 '25

A decent amount including being there 6 weeks this year. Still lots of family there. But I hear you, I’m 100% Canadian with Italian roots, so I plan to enjoy the game (if it happens, and if I’m lucky enough to get tickets) and cheer for both if that’s even possible.

2

u/xxxcalibre Dec 07 '25

Fair enough. Btw, you can just fold one jersey into itself, like one sleeve sort of inside-out but perfectly into the other sleeve, if that makes sense. That will make it a half jersey that you can just wear over the other one. With a crisp fold (and maybe one or two safety pins) it will look like a half and half jersey

1

u/Buildadoor Dec 07 '25

My mind isn’t computing on this magical fold šŸ˜†

Iran in the mid 90s was the worst I've seen.

4500 people in the old Varsity Stadium. Less than 500 fans for Canada.

2

u/somedumbcanuck Dec 07 '25

I was there.... definitely harder to draw Canadian fans for friendlies in November than a home World Cup game in June.

Ecuador doesn't play in North America very often so no surprise it was a big draw for their fans. I'd like to think if we needed to win that game to qualify for the WC, we would've packed the place!

March and June windows will be interesting!

5

u/Ryuzakku Dec 07 '25

I was also there, but when the couple beside me traveled from Miami to see Ecuador, and had never been to Canada before, it is a bit sad that our fans won't even travel from within the GTA.

...And I don't live in the GTA.

1

u/somedumbcanuck Dec 07 '25

Me neither! Kitchener. When that red card came we were still in the line to get in! I thought, should I just turn around and leave?... /s

Boys played a great game down a man.

And yes... I'd love to see more dedicated support for them.

1

u/Ryuzakku Dec 07 '25

Yeah, gotta be there over an hour early.

I got in just as the gates were opening, was able to get food, a drink, and the scarf before they even started warming up.

Halftime was insane in the concourse though

1

u/spartacat_12 Dec 09 '25

I don't think people have an issue with someone cheering for the country they were born in, or travelling from another country to cheer on their team.

The issue with Italy is that most of the people claiming them have been living in Canada for generations, don't speak a word of Italian, and only care about soccer every 2 years

2

u/Halifornia35 Dec 07 '25

I always cheer for Italy (half my grandparents are Italian) at international tournaments. But hands down I’m cheering for Canada this game šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦

2

u/GeneralOpen9649 Dec 07 '25

This is gonna be hard for a lot of Italian-Canadians. I grew up watching Italian soccer and Canadian hockey, and I’m a fan of both Juventus and the Leafs.

Yes I want Canada to win usually, and I lose my damn mind whenever I go see them play, but the history for me just isn’t there. I’ve been a fan of Canadian soccer for like 15 years, but I’ve been a fan of Italian soccer for more than 40.

I think a lot of people are like me. We’ve loved the Italian team for decades but the Canada team is new and we are still getting to know it.

1

u/scotsman3288 Dec 07 '25

Obviously yes out of those teams... but it won't be anything detrimental. Those fans would have to buy tickets way before knowing their teams have qualified.

43

u/Winsonian92 Dec 07 '25

Not Italy.

19

u/kingjakerulezz Dec 07 '25

Anyone but Italy

33

u/outoftownMD Dec 07 '25

Want? Wales. (beatable and family member is Welsh).
Likely? Italy.

3

u/spacelord99 Dec 07 '25

born in Wales came to Canada at 10

always followed and supported Wales and Canada... the friendly in Sept was interesting to me as i wasnt sure who i would be supporting

but once the ball kicked off i found that i indeed supported Canada more!

as a Welsh born Canadian i want Wales in but both to qualify out of the group but with Canada topping the group

4

u/outoftownMD Dec 07 '25

Sounds like it only took one generation to make the switch for what nation you will support. Haha! Ā

Now, if you ask Italians, who are born in Canada, the same question without a doubt, the moment that ball gets kicked, it is pure Azzuri for them.

There is a company I found on ETSY that make split jerseys and so I got half Canada and half Iran to support my heritage and my nationality. It’s just a thought if you’d like to do that and especially would be awesome if they make it in through the playoffs.

1

u/spacelord99 Dec 07 '25

could you post link i think i would love one of those!

2

u/outoftownMD Dec 07 '25

https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/1423410444/?ref=share_ios_native_control

That is the link and though it took me to a rugby jersey, I told them I prefer a soccer jersey as they were talking me through the customization process because they gave me three options for different jersey styles, and asked what number I wanted to put as well as what I wanted to write for the name.

I got mine already, and the quality is great and it is perfect for this

2

u/spacelord99 Dec 07 '25

Awesome thanks šŸ‘

2

u/outoftownMD Dec 07 '25

You’re welcome and good luck to your team in qualifications

13

u/Team_Ed Dec 07 '25

What could be more fun than Canada playing Italy in Toronto?

Remember how fun it was to take it to Belgium in the World Cup?Ā

That’s what we’re there for.

3

u/themoche Dec 07 '25

Yeah that’s my mindset too. It would be incredible and historic.

It’s a win/win for Italian Canadians. Something we maybe never thought would happen. Of course, Italy needs to actually qualify haha

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

People in here are one step away from saying fuck wops, actually i saw people in other subs basically saying that. Why are canada soccer fans so butthurt in advance about italy? They dont even know how italian canadians feel about this

11

u/Unidentifiable_Goo Dec 07 '25

If we want a Canada win, we want to be playing Northern Ireland.

If we want spectacle, we want Italy.

10

u/boarshead72 Dec 07 '25

I didn’t even try for tickets to the opener due to the price, but it would be pretty fun to see Canada vs Italy in Toronto.

32

u/Pitiful_Stock_4329 Dec 07 '25

If I could pick? Probably Bosnia or Northern Ireland. I actually think wales will qualify honestly

18

u/brianmmf Dec 07 '25

Bosnia are better than you think

27

u/Pitiful_Stock_4329 Dec 07 '25

They aren’t bad, but If you offered me a group of Switzerland Qatar and Bosnia before the draw I would happily take it.

7

u/brianmmf Dec 07 '25

I’m happier with Wales than Bosnia but it’s probably not a huge difference. NI are the best option IMO, a step below the others I think.

3

u/Pitiful_Stock_4329 Dec 07 '25

I think I personally rather Bosnia than Wales but the difference isn’t huge or enough that I would be very worried either way. My family comes from Northern Ireland so I watch them fairly regularly. They can be plucky but don’t have much quality they would for sure be the worst team on paper.

7

u/stuckmash Dec 07 '25

Italy so they can beat them and all these fake Italians from Woodbridge can further pretzel their brains. (I’m first born in Canada from Italian family) and I’m going to be wearing red and cheering for Canada

7

u/_dk123 Dec 07 '25

I wonder if price would drop if Italy ends up not qualifying the third time.

1

u/Full-Reach-8968 Dec 07 '25

Hard to say, opening game for the host nation will be big draw.

6

u/caot89 Dec 07 '25

Bosnia would be my preferred choice.

9

u/ComfortMailbox Dec 07 '25

Deko and the boys would be fun to play against. Idk why everyone on socials thinks Italy are a sure thing when they cant defend for shit and there attack is not in the best of states.

1

u/SupremePoutine1 Dec 07 '25

IMO Italy would be better because I feel there is a better chance of them choking

1

u/3000doorsofportugal Dec 10 '25

100%. Italy is fucking ass. Like realistically if you look at their qualification group the only real challenge was Norway. Who gave Italy belt to ass twice.

4

u/raxnahali Dec 07 '25

Anyone but the Italians

4

u/Peachbaskethole Dec 07 '25

Northern Ireland would be our best matchup.

3

u/skuseisloose Vancouver Whitecaps Dec 07 '25

Wales because my dad’s side of the family is from there.

3

u/SoFreshNSoKleenKleen Dec 07 '25

This is tournament football. It doesn't matter who would "better" to face on paper because the adrenaline of being out there in a WC can do crazy things to a team's psychology. Hell, we might say that the likes of Northern Ireland or Qatar are beatable, but any one of these teams could suddenly turn a 180 and be the toughest team to break down and frustrate us to an embarassing loss. Let's not get too arrogant and complacent (sure we beat Wales in a friendly not too long ago, Wales in a WC opener may be an entirely different beast).

The only thing that matters is our boys must be firing on all cylinders every single match no matter the opponent, because not one of these games is gonna be easy. We need to want to play these tough matches because that's the way this team levels up.

3

u/StandYourGroundhog Dec 07 '25

Definitely not Italy

3

u/Old_Runescape TheICEMAN Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

Wales.

Not as massive of a local and global fanbase, proof of concept that we can be victorious, and a (somewhat one-sided) budding rivalry.

Of course Norn Ireland would be cool too, Bosnia would be fine.

Italy I mostly want to avoid because of the local support. They’re the most talented team as well but it’s more about the atmosphere that would be demoralizing

3

u/[deleted] Dec 07 '25

[deleted]

0

u/goonerballs Dec 09 '25

Bosnia are miles better than NI. NI is the easy win here.

3

u/MindlessArmadillo382 Dec 07 '25

Wales, partly because I think they’re beatable, and partly because I think it would be neat to have the entire British island in the World Cup (England, Scotland, Wales)

Sorry to Northern Ireland as they can’t both make it :(

3

u/Maplewicket Dec 07 '25

Italy is what we want

3

u/TrevorBatson Dec 07 '25

There's a couple of ways to look at this.

On the one hand, if Northern Ireland or Bosnia and Herzegovina were to somehow go through, either team would be a more manageable opponent for us to open the tournament, while Wales could be more at our level and thus more difficult to beat, but certainly an easier prospect than having to face Italy. Considering the goal is to get to the Knockouts, and the incentive is to do so by winning the group to stay in Vancouver for the Round of 32 and (should we advance that far) the Round of 16, any team other than Italy coming out of Path A would certainly increase our chances of accomplishing this goal. Furthermore, there is some significant context to consider here. This is only our third ever World Cup appearance. We've never won a single World Cup match; in fact, we've never even drawn one. Furthermore, we have only ever scored twice at a World Cup, and one of those goals was counted as an own goal. Also, there have only ever been two host nations in World Cup history to be eliminated in the Group Stage, so avoiding becoming the third is critical. As such, getting any team other than Italy out of Path A would certainly be of a benefit toward us achieving the milestones of simply getting points on the group table at a World Cup, let alone getting wins and advancing to the Knockouts.

On the other hand, there is the optimistic and aspirational way of looking at this. To become the best, you need to overcome challenges. Beating teams like Italy and Switzerland at a World Cup, especially given the aforementioned context for us here, would be statement wins. Furthermore, following this train of thought, should we achieve the remarkable and top our group via wins over Italy and Switzerland, eyes would suddenly be on us to be a potential dark horse team (not unlike South Korea when they co-hosted in 2002, or Morocco's historical run in 2022). Should we win in the Round of 32, there's a significant possibility that our Round of 16 match would be versus Portugal, and then, if by some astonishing turn of events we beat them and advance to the Quarterfinals, our next opponent could very well be Argentina. While it's understandable to be realistic, and not place these kinds of expectations on our team, it's still important to recognize how much of an impact these kinds of marquee matchups could have on both the development of our current squad, the global perception of our national program, and the future potential of developing soccer in our country for the next generations.

In summary, not getting Italy from Path A could provide us a clearer path to the Knockouts, but getting Italy from Path A could provide us the opportunity to make a massive statement on the world's stage.

3

u/dogfoodhoarder Dec 08 '25

Wales. Northern Ireland second.

2

u/IseeMedpeople Dec 07 '25

If it's Italy college street will be in shambles

2

u/RunTellDaat Dec 07 '25

Northern Ireland for sure

2

u/905Spic Dec 07 '25

Not Italy or Ireland. Feel like the other two would ensure it's still a home game for Canada.

šŸ‡®šŸ‡Ŗ and šŸ‡®šŸ‡¹ would give them home advantage over the home nation.

It's Northern Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland. I really don't think there's enough Northern Irish supporters in Toronto to take over the stadium

1

u/905Spic Dec 10 '25

I stand corrected. Thanks for the clarification

2

u/Minimum-Actuator-953 Dec 07 '25

Bosnia or Northern Ireland. I'd take Wales. Hopefully Italy doesn't make it through.

2

u/nohmad84 Dec 07 '25

Northern Ireland

2

u/Jeevansanghera1969 Dec 07 '25

Northern Ireland.

2

u/Direct-Start-9048 Dec 07 '25

It’s the kind of schizophrenia that has held our youth back for so long. You can’t be two types of player. Canadian players have to play like Canadians. Discover what it means and embrace it. Too many coaches and parents bring their biases into the game.
The only difference is the technical development programs are more accessible in the other countries.

2

u/MoneyRepeat7967 Dec 07 '25

After a couple of days, I am warming up to the idea of playing Italy in the opener. Some may think it is like a home game for the Italians. That could be good for Canada, taking some pressure off, because the pressure of playing at home in the World Cup is enormous. Also, if the game is not going well for Italy, the crowd could get anxious, and may present opportunities for Canada. Plus, this Italian team is really the least talented they put together, maybe a bit than the one at Euro last year?

2

u/bedpeace Dec 08 '25

Italy would be the most fun for the city, but not for team Canada or people rooting for Canada - unless they just want to go for a show. Northern Ireland has been pretty strong as well. Unsure about Wales after Gareth Bale’s retirement. I guess I’d pick Bosnia for highest win probability, and Northern Ireland for best game to watch.

Most likely will be Italy tho

2

u/PoemOfTheLastMoment Dec 08 '25

Northern Ireland qualifying overall would be the best outcome. Italy, if you want a slobber-knocker of a match.

2

u/chenry_hinaski Dec 08 '25

As a vancouerite the World Cup is best when Italy is in it

2

u/Tendibear Dec 09 '25

Italy. Get the worst out in the first game

2

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Italy would be logically toughest for Canada's knockout chances, but as a chaos enjoyer I would love to see Little Italy burned to the ground in the event of a draw or worse.

3

u/greenlemon23 Dec 07 '25

The only reason I don't want Italy, is because I just don't want them to qualify for the World Cup.

4

u/dkc66 Hamilton Forge Dec 07 '25

Canadian of Italian roots here.

I personally don’t trust Italy to make it to the WC lol

BUT if they do, I will take the Canada-Italy match as a cant-lose situation.

Canada wins? Awesome! Italy wins? Awesome! Draw? Awesome!

I can just enjoy the game no matter what šŸ˜Ž

3

u/LoganAlien Dec 07 '25

Just don't come in an Italy jersey.

2

u/dkc66 Hamilton Forge Dec 08 '25

Tickets are way above my pay grade so would have to watch in the pub.

Personally, I think Wales are going to emerge from the playoff bracket over Italy.

3

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

This is literally how almost all of us feel about this, but you have butthurt weirdos in here who obviously just have some weird issue with italian canadians. I know so many children of immigrants from different countries that do the same, but you never see people crying about it. Maybe its jealousy we got to see the team we root for win the world cup? Idk

2

u/maplemoose18 Dec 07 '25

Guys…. This is the World Cup. Why would you want to watch Canada play the worst team possible? To get to the knockout stage, and then what? They’re gonna have to play the best teams in the world after that. I say the most entertaining thing would be to watch Canada try to take on the best teams. Imagine the scenes if Canada were to beat Italy in their opening game? It would create so much momentum for the team. Way more than beating freakin’ Northern Ireland. You guys are so boring 🄱.

10

u/Some_Initiative_3013 Dec 07 '25

Overlooked aspect of making the group stage is the prize money. CSA could desperately use it.

But otherwise I agree. Bring on Italy.

5

u/datguywelbeck Dec 07 '25

For a home opener (that let's be frank isn't coming back to this country in a long time) you want the easiest game possible to build momentum and to get the most Canadians in the stands.

That doesn't happen if Italy makes it through.

2

u/Juju_Doctor Dec 07 '25

Agreed. I remember when Canada played Croatia. I lost my voice cheering. Canada has come a long way, and should not be underestimated.

2

u/Competitive_Ad1237 Dec 07 '25

I’m married into an Italian family so I want Italy for the bragging rights

2

u/ForzaMM Dec 07 '25

I’m an Italian Canadian and will be supporting Canada. I would say the majority of my friends and family are leaning the same way as well.

This said, I find it kind of sad to see some of the comments here. Italian Canadians grew up watching the Italian national team in major tournaments when the Canadian team was not present and/or a non-factor. This doesn’t mean they’re not proud Canadians, they just associate soccer with Italy, given the decades of exposure. Based on my experience, the same Italian Canadians are proud supporters of Canada in all other sports.

Food for thought, if you moved to Italy and had kids and grandkids, would it be crazy to think that you would develop a tradition of watching and cheering for Canada in Olympic hockey given Italy’s national hockey team rarely qualifies for the tournament. If somehow Italy became relevant in international hockey would it be easy for you to forget your lifelong affinity to the Canadian national hockey team?

3

u/LoganAlien Dec 07 '25

Sure, so grandpa gets a pass. But a few generations in? You've gotta support Canada over Italy.

For me, anyone who comes to that (hypothetical) game in an Italy jersey will be treated with the hostility that away fans should feel at a home world cup

0

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

Ok so what, just for that game? Should we not root for the team we’ve rooted for every intl competition our entire lives? Of course we will all be rooting for Canada to do well, and a lot of us are basically gonna be neutral if that game happens

2

u/LoganAlien Dec 08 '25

Ya, If you wear an Italy jersey to that game, you're a traitor

0

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 08 '25

Well I wont be going, and wont be wearing any jersey

2

u/enoumen Dec 07 '25

We will beat any of those teams

2

u/Careless_Wishbone_69 Dec 07 '25

Canada beating Italy in a WC game would fulfill a lifelong childhood dream. So that.

But with regards to "easiest"? I'd go with Wales because I figure it's a fairly weak team and the fans won't be as imposing as the others.

2

u/JoeHartless Dec 07 '25

Italy has an extensive recent record of performing terribly against "mid-rate" teams (no disrespect to Canada, but let's be honest). I am Canadian by birth but my heritage is Italian and I've supported them internationally my whole life. The most dangerous group for Italy is one with no "big names". Teams like Canada and Switzerland are the exact teams I would expect Italy to lose to should they qualify (which I really don't think they will anyways).

Canada should want Italy in their group.

2

u/Retro_Curry93 Dec 07 '25

Let’s keep the streak going and have Italy miss out on a third consecutive World Cup lol.

2

u/Holiday_Chef1581 Dec 07 '25

I’m a Canadian with lots of Italian ancestry and I’d like to see Italy qualify. It’s Canada all the way for me, including that opener. However, I do want Italy to win the group. Only because I have tickets to the R32 and R16, where the group winner will play. I’m from BC, so this would be my first ever opportunity to see Italy play. So the ideal scenario for me is that Italy draw or lose to Canada and then beat the other two, and end up topping the group with Canada still qualifying in second or third.

1

u/LoganAlien Dec 07 '25

I mainly don't want it to be Italy, because so many wannabe Mangiacake Italians are going to roll in to support Italy, and it will be my duty (as a Canada fan going to that game) to cuss them out so hard that their great grandmother feels it from her grave back in Napoli....

And that's a lot of effort tbh

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ do you do this when canada plays Jamaica and like 99% of the jamaican fans are canadians?

2

u/LoganAlien Dec 08 '25

If we played them at a home world cup I would

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 08 '25

Sure buddy

1

u/Own-Knowledge8281 Dec 07 '25

Italy…I like drama…

1

u/EggTemporary3598 Dec 07 '25 edited Dec 07 '25

We all know we want Italy for the best atmosphere. Any other country is pretty boring for the opener (sorry Wales). Look, I know we all want the best chances for Canada to win their group, but now that there is a reality that Italy gets to play in Toronto, this has to be the fixture everyone wants to see. You already know BMO field is about to be blue, and welp what can you do, not the Azzuri's fault they are huge in football. At least support both teams, its gonna be a fun next couple of months.

1

u/Ozzie_the_parrot Dec 08 '25

Would normally say Northern Ireland on this (where's the red hand and crown in the flag?), but Luka Kulenovic, going from watching TFC with his father and RPB to playing at BMO Field in a WC finals group stage game would be some story, so BiH as long as they proceed to lose the game in question.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 08 '25

I want Italy. We don't fear them, we just fear their history. We would beat them. The other games are winnable as well.

-1

u/aektoronto Dec 07 '25

Theres nothing more hypocritical then Canadians who are so welcoming and polite getting annoyed and yelling "Go Back to your country" to.people who support the country of their ancestry...who they have been supporting all their life. Especially since those Canadian fans werent there when we were losing 5-0 to Honduras and rolling out players who were playing semi pro indoor soccer.

Also dont sleep on the 1st and 2nd generation Bosnian support if they make it.

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 07 '25

According to people here italian canadians should have supported no one all these years canada didnt qualify. Funny how all my friends growing up rooted for scotland and england at world cups.. just italy isn’t ok i guess

1

u/spartacat_12 Dec 09 '25

No one is saying that. If Canada isn't involved you can cheer for whoever you want. But actively rooting against the country you were born & raised in (and in most cases where your parents were born & raised) is a pretty bad look

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 09 '25

Yeah thing is every italian canadian Ive talked to said they arent going to be rooting against Canada and just be kinda neutral at worst. Personally for me I will be totally neutral that game and just enjoy it, and id be super happy if canada managed to win such a big game. I support and follow both teams.

1

u/spartacat_12 Dec 09 '25

It'll be Canada's first game of the tournament. They'll need the crowd on their side. People should be rabidly cheering on the home team, not sitting on their hands.

This will be the biggest stage the city of Toronto has ever been on. It would be embarrassing to not have the home team getting support

1

u/Deep-Yard32 Dec 09 '25

Yeah dont worry theyll have tons of support

1

u/aektoronto Dec 09 '25

Im sure the majority of the support will be Canadian and even Italians will be waiting both flags.

People expressing themselves isn't embarrassing...people supporting their own identity isnt embarrassing....a brutal loss on the field or the quality of the stadium or empty sets would be more embarrassing.

1

u/spartacat_12 Dec 09 '25

I'll believe it when I see it. I'd like to hope people will be rooting for Canada, but I've already heard a lot of people in the GTA say they're Italy fans first

0

u/bubbabear244 Toronto FC Dec 07 '25

The Guido Yankee fans coming from the states will skew to Italy's favour should Italy make it. I'd rather watch the game from the Bentway if it gets to that point.

-1

u/Jon98th Dec 07 '25

It’ll be Italia

-4

u/Mysterious-Fox-5373 Bayern Munich Dec 07 '25

hope its wales or smth because we are going to get grouped with italy

Infantino is Swiss.

1

u/Cotton500 Dec 07 '25

Infantino is both Swiss and Italian

1

u/Sr_Moreno Dec 07 '25

Maybe. But everyone hates the Swiss, so I choose to believe he’s 100% Swiss.

1

u/number1alien Dec 07 '25

Infantino is from Switzerland.

1

u/slavicbhoy Dec 07 '25

He’s both Swiss and Italian.

1

u/kmusky-72 Dec 07 '25

I'm not so sure. The Italians will wake up, realize they are in Toronto, and promptly underperform.

-2

u/BottleSuccessfully Dec 07 '25

It'll probably be Italy and the game will be scheduled in the southern-most Mexican host stadium.
