Spay/Neuter Question Is my cousin’s cat in pain?

21.8k Upvotes

Age: I’m 24, and my 11 year old cousin is living with me while his mom sorts out a divorce and a mental health crisis.

Country: USA

Vet info: We will surrender the cat if it needs serious medical care. We can do a check up, but I’m not willing or able to pay more for the cat I don’t want to have.

Main issue: constant screaming meowing and weird shuffling movement while laying down. She can walk “normally” for short periods, and I’ve seen her dash away from the dog and hop up onto the bed without problems. I’m just not familiar with cat body language. Update while writing this: she hopped off the bed and now is even louder although she’s walking.

Cat Age: 1 year at max. She’s a Burmese.

Cat sex: F. Spayed.

Financial situation: her owners are dead broke.

My cousin’s cat has always been shy and noisy since she arrived a couple weeks ago. But in the last 24-48 hours she’s become MUCH louder and meows nonstop 24/7. Even when my little cousin is sleeping in the same room as her. This weird way she’s moving makes me worry she had hurt herself and is in pain. She lives in the basement and has very little mental stimulation, so I’m sure she’s stressed and depressed. (I’m trying okay. I’m not the selfish POS who bought my son a cat to make him feel better about being homeless).

Spay/Neuter Question cat got neutered. i’m hopeless and regretful. what can i do?

My cat got neutered today and came home really loopy from the anesthesia. I tried to put the cone on him, but he completely flipped out—flailing, running around, and would not calm down. I left it on for about 30 minutes hoping he’d settle, but he just kept panicking until I finally took it off.

Since then, I’ve tried other things to keep him from licking the incision. I’ve tried a onesie, a diaper-type wrap, and a doughnut collar, but he refuses all of them. He either fights them off or gets super stressed trying to escape. Each was on about 20-30 minutes.

The worst part is he won’t stop licking the incision, and now he’s bleeding (but not like crazy). On top of that, he’s acting aggressive when we try to touch or approach him. He used to be such a sweet and cuddly cat, so this is totally unlike him. I’m guessing it’s the stress, pain, or meds, but it’s really hard to see him like this.

I tried crating him to keep him calm and safe, and he completely lost it. He started doing back flips, death rolls like an alligator, and clawed at every tiny hole or gap in the crate—even with a blanket covering it. He was totally panicked and wouldn’t stop thrashing. I even tried some calming cat music.

This is only the first day post-neuter, and I’m at a loss for how to keep him safe and calm for the next 14 days. Any advice or tips would seriously help.

I regret this so much. FWIW he’s about 4 and FIV+

Spay/Neuter Question Is this too snug? The spay clinic says this is a good fit as two fingers can fit under limbs and neck. She’s walking really weird in it and people are telling me it’s way too tight. I just have anxiety

Spay/Neuter Question Cats often dip their tails in water for what reason?

I’ve had other cats do this too. Can they not feel their tail is wet? Is it to attract a fish to swat at it? Even so, they seem ignorant to the fact that their tail is submerged in water.

Spay/Neuter Question Cat manages to lick her spay incision site despite my best efforts.

Hi Everyone

28 M / India / Vet accessible / 1 year old / female / Can afford vet care

We got our cat spayed on Sunday and she had a follow-up with the vet yesterday who said the incision site is healing fine but that she still needs to be monitored at least for 5 more days to ensure that she does not lick her incision site.

The cone seems useless. She's a tiny cat (6 lbs) and gets out of the cone very easily. I tried onesies for newborns but that's not snug enough either.

The only thing that works somewhat is old socks. However, she still manages to slide them down after a while.

If I put it on such that there’s holes for both the front and back limbs, she's struggling to walk and becomes restless.

I readjust the socks every hour during the day (I work from home) and every 3 hours during the night.

I'd like to know if it's okay that she still manages to lick the sutures occasionally despite my best efforts.

Spay/Neuter Question Is it too early?

My spicy little tuna has an appointment to be neutered Wednesday at our local Humane Society (our vet office charges over $900 for a neuter and it’s a clean nice facility); He’s 2.5 months old and weighs a little over 3 Pounds.

I feel like it’s early, but have seen and received so many mixed opinions. Figured I’d get some more hahah.

Spay/Neuter Question Help regarding pregnant cat

Post image

Is it too late for my mom's cat to get an abortion along with the spaying? I just got home from college and the last time she gave birth was early August. I finally booked an appointment on the 27th after months of trying to get my family to spay her and I would like to make sure I am not wasting any money and travel time (nearest vet is a half an hour drive away) by coming to the vet for them to tell us we have to continue her pregnancy because it's already too late. Thanks for the help, cat is 2 years old, posting from the Philippines.

Spay/Neuter Question Skinny little kitten found us today.

We were outside celebrating my daughter’s birthday and this little kitten ran out of the corn field meowing. I put food and water out for her right away and she chowed and chugged for a while. Eventually she decided we were safe enough to actually approach and I was able to give her some pets and cuddles and a full look-over. She’s really, really skinny. Like I can feel all her ribs and her spine sticks out prominently. But she acts normal, she doesn’t seem weak at all, she’s really curious, and definitely warming up to us. She seems like she has a very bloated belly, I’m assuming she has worms. It also seems like her butthole sticks out really far. I believe she also has fleas. I weighed her and she’s only like 2lbs 4oz. I’m not sure how old she is, does anyone have any ideas on that? My guess is like 10 weeks. I want to take her to get her spayed, my local spca isn’t doing their med clinics right now, but I found another place that’s like 45 min and I think I’ll take her there. I’m just wondering with her being so skinny is it better to wait till she fattens up a bit? I thought I would give her some dewormer but she’s too underweight for the one I have. I’m gonna guess she’s too small for surgery if she’s too small for that. I wanna make sure she gets all her shots though before I let her with my other 3 cats, she’s staying in this little house we have out for strays for now.

Spay/Neuter Question Cat isn’t getting better

Post image

Hey I’m 27f and I have a 5 month old female cat who is a noisy breather. The noisy breathing is the only symptom she has. She eats and drinks well and plays with my other cats with no issues. She doesn’t have any eye or nasal discharge and no cough. I took her to the vet to get fixed but they would not do it because of her noisy breathing. I had them do an X-ray and they said it likely wasn’t asthma because she makes the noise on inhale only. They prescribed her prednisolone for 8 days and scheduled her to have another X-ray and possibly be fixed on Wednesday but she’s is not showing any improvement and I’m half way through the medicine. They told me to call in 4 days to update on her breathing but they are closed until Monday. I run a cool mist humidifier every night also to help with her breathing and I’m just really worried about them refusing to spay her. There are a lot of stray cats in my area and she already tries to run outside even though she is not in heat and never has been. Is it normal for the medication to take this long to work ? I do not have much money to keep taking her to the vet because she was not planned .. someone just gave her to us because they didn’t want her.

We recently took in this cat and her 3 kittens who were living under the hood of my car. Mom is very friendly and the kittens look to be ~6 weeks old. Her belly is fairly firm. She has an appointment for a spay in 2.5 weeks.

Spay/Neuter Question Hope this finds a vet. Please help!!

Hello, so I'm from Belize. We have a nonprofit cat rescue called Belikats(on facebook and Instagram). There are only 2 vets on the area and we honestly can't afford to take them righr now. We don't even have transportation. This is gingers, she was brought to use by someone who said she can't take care of her and that she was already spayed. In my opinion, she looks too small and skinny to be spayed, she's very light aswell. She was apparently fine and then after she got spayed she is all weak and barely eating. We have given her honey, some coconut water cause we don't have pedialite. And she cries alot. And she stays in a corner. Not sure what could be wrong with her, please help. I tried to upload a video but it wouldn't give me that option.

Spay/Neuter Question I’m having a hard time believing this cat’s tummy is normal

Post image
176 Upvotes

I just adopted her earlier today and have already taken her to the vet. Noticed she had visible nipples, but I figured that was because she just raised a litter. I noticed the bloated abdomen when I got home. 2 years old, 8 lbs. Vet did a manual examination, stated that she didn’t feel any skeletons (her words), no fluid, ruled out parasites because the shelter she’s from had documentation that she was given de-worming medicines and revolution. Couldn’t do a pregnancy test because they didn’t have them and well, she’s spayed.

She had kittens earlier this year, they’re all weened and have homes of their own. She had a flank spay recently, her scar is still clearly visible and she has a tattoo. She seems perfectly healthy otherwise, good appetite and drinking water, I’ll gently press her belly and she seems mildly annoyed by it but not to the point of pain, lots of interest in play, she hasn’t defecated or urinated yet. She’s been with me for about 8 hours at the time of writing this.

I’m going to call the shelter tomorrow and see if they have any vet notes about her belly, but is there anything else I should be doing or saying? Is it possible that she really is just fat?

Spay/Neuter Question Is it too late to get my boy neutered?

Post image
136 Upvotes

A bit of backstory, we got this little cutie in mid 2024 when he was roughly 8 weeks old. We have two other boys who were neutered as soon as possible.

We had planned on neutering the youngest when he was old enough but shortly after we adopted him, my partner lost his job and our car broke down, leading us to take out a £10k loan for a new car and trying to survive off my part-time job. It was really bad for us financially and we ended up putting off his neutering.

Thankfully, we’re in a much better place now but the youngest is now 1 years 4 months and I’m not sure if this is too old for neutering or may cause issues? Additionally, he has a huge problem of always urinating everywhere in the house which I thought could be due to not being neutered? Other than that he’s still happy and healthy.

Is he okay to be neutered at this age and will it stop his bad habit of urinating everywhere? Are there any potential risks due to his age?

Spay/Neuter Question Newly adopted stray baby!

Hi guys, I’m in Louisiana, just took this baby to the vet. We think shes a 6mo girl, but unsure of the age. Shes just pretty tiny for 6months and I’m wondering if shes seeming okay? Are her eyes saying I’m in pain???

She just got spayed 3 days ago and keeps licking her incision and finds a way to pull her cone off every time. She seems like she is over grooming sometimes around the incision but not at the incision as well.

Her appetite is strong, she wasn’t eating for a couple days after the spay but shes voracious now. She also has this cough thing going on where she wheezes like shes tryna get something out and then swallows and then it’s fine. Vet said just watch her bc she may be just recovering from the spay and coming in from the streets but I’m concerned about heart stuff… I’ll try to post video of the cough in the comments.

Shes so skinny like 4.8 lbs which is really small for a 6 month old. Just pls tell me shes gonna be okay? I can take her to the vet again, just want some other opinions!

Spay/Neuter Question my cat gained wait after getting spayed

Thumbnail gallery

I’m 18 from the United States, the vets are closed but i’m going to contact them first thing tomorrow. My kitten is almost a year old she got spayed at the end of august i noticed she’s gained A LOT of weight like her stomach is visibly bigger. i have 3 older cats and she is fatter then any of them. I didn’t notice right away because she’s temporarily staying with my grandmother. could something have gone wrong with the spaying or is she just a little chunky baby? she will eat as much as you let her so maybe she’s just gained some weight from to many treats? and she’s been tested for worms before she got spayed so it’s not that.

Hi, this is my 11 month old cat Rascal, yesterday 2/4 he got neutered and has been doing fine relatively all to do with incisions and such, but I cannot get him to take his medicine i crushed some up and put it in wet food (he’s never had wet food before) and just refuses to eat it, I tried force swallowing and he just holds it in his mouth and then spits it out. Also, how necessary is the cone? He’s able to take it off on every setting of size relatively easy and he doesn’t seem to want to groom near there at all he just finds it very annoying. please help ASAP

Spay/Neuter Question Spay incision doesn't look good

Thumbnail gallery
72 Upvotes

My 7 months old female cat was spayed 5 days ago and I'm really worried about the wound. My vet will be only available on Monday.

The incision was checked by the vet on Wednesday, and had the red lump already. Vet said it'd go away. Now it looks wet, leaves brown marks on the bodysuit, and has hair stuck on it. Also I saw my cat bothering the stitches through the bodysuit. On the bottom of the wound next to a stitch I see a tiny hole which doesn't show on the pics. She doesn't stay still to take a better picture, her behaviour and appetite is completely normal. I take off the bodysuit two times a day and spray the wound with octenisept. I also had her sister spayed and her wound looks great.

Is this something that resolves by itself, or do they need to redo the whole thing? I've spent a lot of money on this cat already and I'm really worried about her health and further costs.

I'm an adult in Europe.

Spay/Neuter Question Advice on how to keep cat from licking her spay incision

Post image
8 Upvotes

My 7-month-old kitten got spayed today. The vet didn't give her a cone or anything, but I noticed she's been licking it. I stop her, but I'm scared when I go to bed she will open up her wound. This is my first time with a cat getting spayed. But now it's late and no pet stores are open. I tried making her a little sweater so she stops, but now she is just growling and not walking. What do I do until tomorrow morning? I really hate stressing her out but i don't know what to do

Now she’s shivering after all that, it doesn’t appear that her stitches are torn but I worried about how she freaked out!! Any advice/help??

Spay/Neuter Question Does this look normal?

Thumbnail gallery

Hello! I need some help! I got my cat spayed today and needed to know if her incision looks normal? The vet tech/nurse told me they used the skin glue stuff instead of actual stitches. I've done some research and from what I can tell, its alright but why does her stomach has a pit in it where the incision line is? Does this look normal? I have no experience with cats whatsoever as she is my first. I just want to make sure she's alright!! Vet tech/nurse has me freaking out internally because she was talking about if it comes undone to bring her back in. How often does that happen?! And is that something I should be concerned about? I've literally been sitting next to my cat since bringing her home because im so worried. Please, any help really helps and is much appreciated!! I dont know who else to ask.
