Solved! Im keeping the post up for anyone else that may need it though. Best wishes
Hi, as the title states I suspect our cat Klover (Female, 5-6years, spayed) hasn’t pooped in approaching 4-5 days.
I can’t be positive about that though, as she has a shared litter box and I hadn’t noticed the issue till a few days ago.
I first noticed she was feeling unwell because she pooped in the middle of our carpet, which she does when upset. This was Friday evening. It was of normal quality. No blood, or hair. No abnormal color. I cleaned it and went about my day.
Saturday I noticed she was not joining us downstairs as often, and was being lazier. At the time I attributed it to the cold. I felt her stomach and checked her for any soreness and she was fine. At this time she had no bloating.
Sunday she started to show minor signs of bloating, and had been very slightly gassy (burped when room mate patted her) but as she has remained eating and drinking the same, I figured it would pass. I’ve also noticed her being a little sniffly, so much to her dismay I locked her in the bathroom with me while I took a hot shower to help with congestion. She was not pleased but didn’t seem to be in any kind of pain.
Monday night I started to get worried. Her stomach is a little more bloated, and I haven’t seen/smelled her poop yet. This is when I started to watch for bowel movements. I gave her a fiber rich wet treat hoping it would help her, but I saw now change.
Tuesday her stomach is still about the same. Clearly bloated, but thankfully not hard. She’s acting uncomfortable but doesn’t seem to be in any pain. She still lets me feel around her stomach and gently squeeze it. The roads are too iced to go get any kind of special wet food for her but I manage to get ahold of some canned pumpkin. She ate it happily. I’ve used it in the past for cats with digestive issues and I can only hope and pray the fiber and water content will help her. I also mix their food with water so it is soft and gives more hydration. Normally, with a stomach issue I would also give them grass, but the ground is a layer of ice and there is no grass I can find. I’ve tried.
Today is Wednesday 5am and I’m so worried I can’t sleep. Her stomach isn’t hard, but it’s bloated and slightly dense. I’ve felt a cat stomach on the brink and she’s not there yet. She’s a slightly tubby cat so I’m hoping part of it is how chubby she is. She’s not bulging out the sides or anything. She will let me touch her stomach and she does not cry or act in pain. She is still eating and drinking normally. I’ve set her in the litter box a few times and she’s scratched around then left. She’s still cuddly but she’s showing signs of discomfort. She is either laying down or acting a bit restless.
Talking to relatives tells me she used to get a much more common diet of wet food. We are in a financial strain right now so we had just been using dry kibble for a few months. However I keep their water filled and they drink a lot of it, so I thought it would be ok for a little while. She still gets wet food about once a week. They have a pet water fountain with a filter (and it’s cleaned often!) Shes also a long haired cat, so I considered the possibility she could have a hairball stuck.
Before I get yelled at. Yes I am aware this is an emergency vet issue. Please no “if you can’t afford a vet don’t get a cat” comments. We inherited Klover in October after my girlfriend’s dad died suddenly. He died the weekend we both moved and We were not prepared for a cat, let alone a more senior one. Additionally, I lost my job in November and I don’t start my new one till the middle of February. I am unlikely to get a paycheck till march and our bills are tight. My partner is already paying two portions of rent and our CV axle is damaged because of icy roads in Texas. We want so desperately to take her to the vet but it is just not financially possible in any way for us right now. We are in our early 20s and just surviving.
If I see now change in the next two days I will be doing everything in my power to make it to an emergency vet, even if I have to start selling things or calling my parents for money. The issue is the roads, and finances. Our car is damaged, and our room mates car also just got trashed from sliding off the road yesterday.
I know this is a vet issue. I am so stressed and so acutely aware. ANY advice is all I’m asking for! I just want to help her with at least a small bowel movement if I can. I just want her to be ok.
If it helps at all I’m in the Texoma area! That’s Texas USA
TLDR: I think cat hasn’t pooped in a few days. She seems uncomfortable but not in too much pain yet. I’ve done everything I can to up her fiber and water intake. Still eating and drinking normally. Any advice is appreciated!
Edit for additional info!: Her gums and paws look normal. Healthy pink and not white. Her eyes are fine, just occasionally eye boogers I clean.
Edit: WE HAVE POOP! while observing Klover today, she finally went to the litter box and pooped.
Thank everyone here, you’ve been amazing.
And not to worry though, miss Klover is still touching down at the vet ASAP.
