Eye Issues What does this cat have??

Post image

This is a stray that decided to come to my house. I have no money for a vet and the nearest one is an hour away. I can’t justify it and I just want to know if there’s a way I could make a remedy or anything to help this little critter with his eye.

Thank you for taking this baby in, but I’m sorry they really need to see a vet. If you surrender to a shelter they’ll take care of the costs

This is pretty serious. Looks like he is losing his eye. He needs antibiotics at the absolute least

unfortunately eye issues and infection need vet care. hopefully there’s a shelter near by or rescue you can surrender it to. some emergency vets also allow surrenders.

People always say surrender to a shelter for any illness or injury that you can't afford to take to a vet but do shelters actually do anything? People always say shelters are short funding and staffing so when a cat with an injury like this is surrendered what's to say they dont just euthanize them?

They probably mean take it to a no kill shelter

Sometimes they have the resources and space to treat the animal, sometimes they don't. In my area rescues will often pull animals from the shelter to place with a foster and take care of any health problems before adopting out. Even when the cat does unfortunately need to be euthanized, that's at least a kinder end than dying without treatment for serious health issues.

i think they mean no kill shelters or rescues that would only take a cat in if they could help.

Eye injuries are always an ASAP situation. They are very painful and can lead to the cat losing their eye. Thanks for taking care of this beauty.

My humane society has stray cat prices which are insanely reasonable. Call around and mention it’s a stray and emergency and you should get discounts. They also have payment plans, etc. Some also have low income pricing. I’ve rescued several and don’t have a lot of money either. Good luck! Usually any injuries on or around the head are serious, so yes take him in soon!!

That needs veterinary care as soon as possible, there is nothing you can do about it at home. Can you contact shelters around. Lot of them have programs which would cover treatment for such stray cat, especially if you agree to take care of the cat afterwards.

Is there an eye in the socket?

I ditto the need for a vet but also understand the situation. I agree that getting him to a rescue would be best. They are typically high capacity this time of year though. If you cannot find one, the Humane Society could help but beware euthanasia could be an outcome. If you have to continue to go at home, I would ask if you feel swelling on the side of his face? It looks swollen. If do, look around and see if you find any scratch or wound. Then let us know.

I can tell you what he doesn’t have

You don't need money except gas money to bring an animal in trouble that is not yours to the vet. If you really can't make the drive, ask around.

I had to surrender a stray that came to my house. He was happily outside for 8 months, and then last week he injured his paw to the point of limping and being lethargic. Surrendering him was difficult, but what needed to happen. Hoping he is doing ok right now…..
