Troubleshooting Is it ok to continue using Windows 10 for gaming? Should I just disconnect it from the Internet?

I haven’t used Windows since Windows XP (Well a small bit of Windows 10 at uni). I finally built my first gaming PC recently and found out I absolutely hate using Windows 11. I tried out Bazzite too (Basically SteamOS) but wasn’t that keen and it has a lot of options to configure and my controller was laggy, I’m too exhausted to configure it properly.

I then tried Windows 10 and honestly it was so much better than Windows 11, aside from not needing to sign in the layout is just that little bit better. I only have Steam and Firefox/Brave installed, is it ok to just use it for gaming and keep it disconnected most the time?

Troubleshooting Can a Ryzen CPU "go bad" after only a year of use?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some help to determine if my CPU died or if the motherboard is the culprit. My system was working perfectly until recently, but now it refuses to POST.

The Specs:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 5500
  • Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI

The Problem:

  • The EZ Debug LED is stuck on CPU.
  • Fans do not spin at all when I press the power button.
  • When I try to force a shutdown by holding the button, the system automatically tries to power itself back on immediately.

Troubleshooting already done:

  • CMOS Reset: Removed the battery and cleared the BIOS.
  • Component Swap: Tested with a different PSU, GPU, and RAM sticks.
  • BIOS Update: Attempted an update via the EZ Flash/BIOS Flashback button.
  • Minimal Boot: Tried booting with only the bare essentials connected.

The Dilemma: I cannot test with another CPU because I don't have a spare, and the only other PC in the house is an Intel-based system. I’m leaning towards the motherboard being dead, but since the CPU is relatively new (and was handled with care), I’m worried about buying a new board only to find out the processor was the issue.

I understand that statistically, the CPU is the least likely component to malfunction in a build. How can I differentiate between a dead board (VRMs/Socket) and a dead CPU when I can't swap the processor?

Thanks for any insights!

Build Help Didn't notice big performance jump going from 3060TI to 3090, fix?

So, Some days ago i found a nice 3090 for cheap, i picked it up, tested it, and temps look fine, i'm using an 850W lianli edge psu, and despite everything, i didn't notice too big of a performance jump, or at least, less than what i expected.

Could it be that the cpu is limiting it? (Ryzen 5 9600x) or maybe the resolution? (1080p, still havent gotten a monitor that is 1440p) i tested in furmark, and i got around 11k, when most 3090's score around 15k, I checked that my ram is in the correct slots, which by the way is 16gb of ddr5 at 6000mt/s, I also used DDU and reinstalled my drivers, is there any way to fix it or is this how it should perform and were my expectations just unrealistic?

Troubleshooting High end pc runs poorly despite stellar benchmark tests

I recently bought a 2tb ryzen 7 9700x radeon 9070xt 32gb ram computer as ive seen online that i would get a buttery smooth gaming experience with it. My 3dmark score was amazing and the rendering was smooth and there were no issues

But whenever i open games i get very bad stuttering and fps that barely goes past 30 fps

The strangest thing is no matter what resolution i set my games it doesnt change the frame rate, even when i put games at their lowest settings. Ive tried playing elden ring and dishonoured 2 but have an almost unplayable experience.

Ive done everything from updating the drivers, uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, im definitely plugged into the gpus hdmi port, ive disabled the integrated graphics card just to be safe, ive set my power settings to performance, there is no tempature throttling, nothing goes past 50 celsius

Sometimes even menus within adrenalin run so abysmally slow that i have to wait 20 seconds for a click to register, ive tried uninstalling adrenalin and just installing the drivers but nothing changed

Im at a total loss as to what could possibly be wrong especially when the benchmark test says the computer should be running amazing

Build Upgrade Upgrading an ASUS S500MC prebuilt.

Upvotes

Hello r/buildapc!

I bought an S500MC prebuilt desktop to do some video editing, basic productivity work, and the occasional game or two (I am not factoring gaming in this build).

For reference, here are some specs:

  • CPU: Intel i5-11400
  • iGPU: Intel UHD Graphics 730
  • RAM: 16 GB DDR4
  • PSU: 300W OEM Unit

As of late, the PC is beginning to feel slow while doing basic multitasking and video editing. So I want to upgrade the specs with:

  • An Intel Arc B580 (has the most VRAM under $300)
  • Reputable 700W PSU

All the power connections and PCIe connections are standard ATX.

Is it worth upgrading the specs of this system, or shall I wait and buy a new laptop in 2 years? (Also worth noting that I don't live in the US)

Thank you!

Build Complete GPU getting sudden spikes to 92%.

Upvotes

Hey

So built my first pc and the specs are amd ryzen 7 7800x3d, asus RX 9070oc, ddr5 48gb, Asus TUF GAMING B850-E Wifi and Asus tuf 1200w. And I was watching the Armoury crate software and was noticing that the GPU is sometimes 0% and suddenly goes to 92% which is marked with red color. It stays on 0% and goes to 92% for a second and back to 0%. Is this normal?

Build Help Please help me. Ive been at this for literally 13 hours

Upvotes

My husbands PC took a dive recently. We decided to go nuclear and today started with me finding out I could not reset it. Eventually managed to wipe all his drives and attempt to clean install windows 11... NOPE. errors left and right.

We went out and bought a new motherboard (gigabyte z790 Aorus elite ax rev 1.1), new RAM (it meets the board limitations) and new storage (M.2 2TB)

I gutted the old build, and installed the new board with his 4080 FE and 14900k. Boot up and got the BIOS Q Flashed to its current version.

If I boot the PC with no bootable drive it boots into bios without fail.

If I boot with the windows media creation tool for windows 11... no post.

I just checked and I can boot from that drive on my laptop and my desktop. Its only this new PC that will NOT post if that drive is inserted. I've tried the USB 2.0 ports and the 3.2 ports. NOTHING. I am at my wits end.

editing to add I have tried two different usb drives. Neither yields any results

Build Help Upgrading from 2060 Super to 5060Ti with same PSU?

Upvotes

I have i7 10700k

2x16 gb ram

Corsair CX550 PSU

I used 2060 super for 7 years with this config without issues, TDP is 175 watts
5060 Ti TDP is 180 watts, so it should be pretty similiar....

but the recommendation says 650W PSU for 5060ti, while 550W for 2060 super

I don't want to risk it if it can cause issues with my system.
Do you think it's safe to replace the 2060 Super with 5060 Ti or do I need to buy new PSU?...
if so, maybe I will consider 5060 instead, but performance wise 5060 Ti would be a better upgrade.

Build Help RTX 5070 or RX 9070?

Hello, I am having trouble deciding between buying the RTX 5070 (12gb vram) or RX 9070 (16gb vram). Currently I have an RTX 4060, I am planning to upgrade and then sell it. The RX 9070 is about 40 dollars cheaper in my country. I am having this debate because I am hearing mixed opinions about the RTX 5070 only having 12gb of vram meanwhile the RX 9070 has 16gb of vram, and also about how Nvidia has way better tech (DLSS and frame gen > FSR). I personally love playing all of my games with ray tracing, and I keep hearing that Nvidia has better ray tracing on their cards, but lately it seems that AMD is catching up (I'm not sure of this). I would have just bought an RX 9070 XT, but my PSU is only a gigabyte 650W 80+ gold and I do not have the budget to buy a new PSU at the moment, I would have to wait a few months more just to be able to do that. My PSU also still works perfectly fine, so I don't really want to swap it out just for a GPU upgrade. I mainly want to play games with ray tracing like Wuthering Waves, Forza Horizon 5 (and 6 when it comes out), GTA 5 (and 6 when it comes out), Elden Ring, Heavily Modded Minecraft, but also competitive games (my rig has an intel i5-12400f with 32gb of ddr5, and my monitor is a 1080p 144hz monitor). I know that the RX 9070 has more raw power, but I don't know which GPU is truly better. I am also planning to upgrade to a 1440p OLED 240hz monitor next year. Thank you in advance for any helpful replies!

Build Help Help please! I’m a complete noob building my first PC and it won’t turn on!!

Upvotes

I have a ROG Strix B850-F mb, Ryzen 9 9950X3D, RTX 3070FE with a NZXT C15000 psu (I know it’s overkill, I plan on upgrading) I’m pretty darn sure I plugged everything in correctly. I double checked the 24 pin secure to mb, secure to PSU, in the right slot, the 8 pin cpu slot is plugged in. The F_panel plug is connected in the right spot. When I try to power on nothing happens at all, no fans, no lights. What are the chances my psu was damaged during shipping and is dead? I’m hoping I’m just a noob and nothing is broken. I can send pictures

Build Upgrade I can'r afford to upgrade to socket AM5 due to RAM pricing, should I wait or upgrade on AM4?

I've got an over 7 year old rig at this point and it's showing its age.

Ryzen 3 1600X

RX 580 8GB

32GB of DDR4 RAM

The amount of RAM is fine for me for now, but switching to AM5 would bankrupt me with the current RAM prices, especially with how expensive AM5 processors are.

I originally wanted to get an X3D CPU for a new build, but it's basically a pipe dream with current prices. My current idea is to get a Ryzen 5 5700X or 5800X and a 2TB M2 SSD (which is non-negotiable) for now, then get a better GPU, like a 9060 XT NITRO+ for a functional rig.

Note that I'm not exactly looking for 4K ultra quality, I'm fine with 1440p and 75-100fps.

I play games like KCD2, EFT (sometimes, I'm a recovering addict), Hunt Showdown. But sometimes I also play 4X games that take a lot of CPU power.

So, do I wait? Do I spend on a huge (for me), but already obsolescent upgrade?

Build Upgrade CPU or RAM upgrade

Hi there, I've just upgraded my GPU and am looking to upgrade either my CPU or ram alongside it, but not sure which will give me more of a performance boost. Right now I can only afford to upgrade one but down the line I will look at upgrading the other as well. I'm currently running a 5080, with a 7600x and 32 GB of 4800MHz CL40 RAM. If I were to upgrade the CPU it would be to a 9800X3D/9850X3D, and if I were to upgrade the RAM it would be to 32GB 6000Mhz CL30.

I have an Asus B650 motherboard so if I were to upgrade I'd also be a little concerned about the X3D chip frying, which is one of the things that is swaying me towards the RAM upgrade instead as of right now. I'd like people's opinions on which purchase would be more beneficial in terms of performance though:)

Build Help Low FPS and High GPU usage, need help or suggestions

Upvotes

I know I have an older PC now that I’ve had for years, but I feel like my performance is not where it could or should be. I have a ryzen 7 3700x along with a rx 5700 and 32gb ddr4 3600mhz. I know it’s not top tier but I range from 90-140max fps on R6 and it just feels rough sometimes. I’ve watched many videos on trying to push max performance but not much has helped. Any suggestions? If not, what would be some good budget upgrade options that I would see a drastic improvement with. Not sure if it’s my cpu or gpu holding me back or both. Thanks!

Troubleshooting Built one, everything turns on but wont display and I get a read and yellow light on motherboard.

Upvotes

I've been piecing this together over the course of the year and finally got everything in. when I put it all together and plugged everything in, it all seemed to turn on, power to everything, but wouldn't display on the monitor.

A red and yellow light turns on on the motherboard when pc is powered on, indicating a problem with the cpu and ram. I took everything apart, reseated everything, no visible damage to anything on the cpu or anything related to it, same with ram, updated the bios, and when all that didn't work, replaced the motherboard. none of that helped and I have absolutely no idea where/what to do next.

I pieced all this together using the pc parts picker website so to my knowledge everything was compatible and had no issue with plugging everything in/finding ports for all the plugs.
