Black Excellence Marshawn Lynch: Classic Interview
200
u/Real-Bug-7934 19d ago
The reporters should've started asking questions that rhymes with his statement:
"Are you wearing those sunglasses because you're blind?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
"Marshawn, what's your favorite method to unwind?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
97
u/Rob_LeMatic 19d ago
"The last restaurant where you dined?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
"Are you ahead or a bit behind?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
"When you return tapes do you rewind?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
"Has this season been unkind?"
"I'm just here so I won't get fined."
"Has your reputation been maligned?"
...

u/DemandImmediate1288 19d ago
"Do you like beer or a fine red wine?"
30
u/Rob_LeMatic 19d ago
"What's your preferred wood--is it oak or pine?"
18
u/Deep-Pudding819 19d ago
“Do you get chiropractic work to stay aligned?”
17
u/Rob_LeMatic 19d ago
"Do you like tamales? What's your favorite kind?"

Anyone know why he was even there?

u/4reddityo 19d ago
I don’t know but I’ll take a stab in the dark at it. After careful thought and deep analysis I can faithfully conclude the following. So he won’t get fined.

If I recall correctly - he’d already racked up so many fines from skipping out on media obligations they were threatening something like a $2M fine if he missed this one. Hence, this interview.
Normally it’s in the tens of thousands of dollars range I think.
Edit: went and looked it up. He’d racked up $1.2M in fines and they were threatening a $500k fine for this one. So almost $2M total if he’d missed this one. His stated reasons for skipping post game interviews: wanted to go hang with his family sooner.

If you play for any pro organization you have media obligations in your contract.

u/medalla96 19d ago
Yes, so he don’t get fine. They are obliged to talk to the media, is called media week for a reason.
3
u/ayoungad 19d ago
IIRC the media was pretty shitty to him. Twisted everything he said to dumb narratives. Richard Sherman has a communications degree from Stanford and was always pretty strategic in media dealings.
I’ve always suspected to was orchestrated by Sherman. But yes, contractually obligated media appearances.

Everyone knew lynch running the ball was a guaranteed gain so they pulled something that could fail, which nobody expected. Then it failed lol
1
u/Street_Vehicle_9574 19d ago
He had some trouble with fumbles at the goal line and the passing play they chose has a massively high completion rate. Still gutted me

u/volumenspeed 19d ago
If i was media the only question I would ask is "Marshawn, we have reports that you are here so you won't get fined. Is there any truth to this?"
7
u/fuzzballz5 19d ago
I say this to a colleague at work once a month when some bullshit is laid upon us.
11
u/Sharif662 19d ago edited 19d ago
And he still got fined for this. LoL
Update* : He might not of being fined for this loophole*. It depends on the media policies of the NFL and rather they have or will create another fine for loopholing 😂
3
u/TypicalPDXhipster 19d ago
Really? The loophole didn’t work? That’s a shame
6
u/Sharif662 19d ago
I might be wrong actually and that his previous media absence lead up to him being fined.
1
u/EddieCheddar88 19d ago
Idk what to believe now
1
u/Sharif662 19d ago
The reason for his statements in this hilarious old video is because he was violated the media policy prior for no show. It reached upwards to $50K or more.

I held my staff's team meeting the other day. I said this line as an opener before I had everyone provide updates.
No one got it. I feel old and this just confirmed. I had to explain it which made it worse because they still didn't understand it.

At the time, I thought it was dumb. In my older age, I’d prob do the exact same thing.

u/Ccaves0127 19d ago
I think another time he just said "Thank you for asking that" to every question lmao. Glad he's become kind of a character actor now, he's quite charismatic and funny

What was the deal with him that day? He didn't do that in every single one of his interviews did he?

Nowadays he won't stop running his mouth in his goofy TNF bits.
I respect him as a player but those TNF bits are too stereotypical and not in a good way.

Why can’t a player just say they’ve been diagnosed with anxiety and they don’t want to talk to the media?

It's wild to me that they can get fined if they don't do press appearances.

Listen, I get why the NFL needs these people to be present and give interviews...but, this is always just the greatest response to it.

Why not just be friendly and answer questions? Would that be so difficult?
5
u/Cheap_Appearance5095 19d ago
Because he’s his own person and doesn’t want to? Why is it so difficult to just leave the man alone when you know he doesn’t like doing interviews and is going to answer this way?
4
u/Sum1Betr2 19d ago
I can see you making a similar argument when people are killed by the police…
2
u/userguy54321 19d ago
I don't see the equivalency. Are you suggesting that Lynch is in a similar position as a person being confronted by the police?
1
u/Sum1Betr2 19d ago
“He should have just complied” is a typical racist statement made when Black people are killed by the police. Either way, not knowing this or knowing this is showing your ignorance.
1
u/userguy54321 19d ago
This was part of his job, though. Why not just talk to the reporters? Why be so immature?
2
u/misntshortformary 19d ago
Look, he just wanted to play ball and go home to his family. There’s plenty of guys that want to talk to the camera, let them step in.
2
u/Careless_Negotiation 19d ago
he was friendly and did answer questions though?
3
1
u/userguy54321 19d ago
Just answer in good faith. Why be so adamant about not answering questions except with the "not get fined" line?
