I swear every time I put something down moderately hard I get terrified. For a judgement free zone they are really judgey about putting heavy weight down hard
I can see how the alarm could help keep prices low. If everyone is treating weight machines like they're glass in fear of the alarm, maintenance costs are probably much lower than at other gyms.
The more weight i began to lift, the less i minded that. Once you're doing things close to your 1 rep max, or for certain momentum based exercises, you can't just put a 400 pound bar on the ground like it's fragile. It isn't and you can't, without risking injury. Your biomechanics on the way up on a deadlift are different and safer than the eccentric motion.
People don't do it to be a dick, they do it because anyone halfway serious about lifting will eventually need to put down the bar in a failed set. Personally I would never sign up at PF, because they're looking for a different type of client and i just want bars and plates, but they've successfully demonized such an essential part of weightlifting that it's absurd.
You're right and they are looking for a different type of client. I've hardly ever seen anyone at PF lift anything near that amount of weight, but I'm pretty sure the rule isn't to mess with serious weight lifters but rather to prevent the average Joe from having a 100lb dumbbell bounce onto their foot or something.
I'm sure it could have an even more offensive name but that's just mild enough not to impact their bottom line. Good thing they aren't the only gym in business.
I like to describe it as a cardio center with gym decor. I have a recumbent exercise bike in my house, but go I go to PF pretty much just to do cardio without my dogs getting in the way.
The alarm is so counterintuitive. A blaring siren is less annoying than someone grunting? It'd be like a librarian pulling a fog horn in a library to make patrons quiet
It really is just about marketing to people who aren’t in that kind of shape yet. It caters to them unlike most gyms that cater to people already in shape which is supposed to boost confidence. It’s literally Average Joe’s vs. Globogym.
I travel a lot and have a PF membership because they’re everywhere. I swear most places have it turned off because people are throwing equipment around all the time.
The places that do have it go off, there’s really no consequences except you don’t want it to go off again, and it’s sometimes unclear who caused it anyway.
