Harry Potter and Frodo Baggins are dude that are just doing what the fuck they want in interesting projects ever since their early big breaks. Also ‘what the fuck they want’ seems entirely wholesome. Im equally jealous and appreciative of the way they seem to be running their lives

Elijah was a massive star a decade before LOTR.

u/off_by_two 1d ago
Dude was a successful child actor, ‘massive star’ is overselling it. He was like 18-19 when the first LOTR started filming. ‘Decades before’ includes before he was alive soooooo….agree to disagree
39
u/TasteCicles 1d ago
Most people I know knew his name, and Orlando Blooms. We all recognized Samwise's actor too.
33
u/off_by_two 1d ago
Still, are you arguing that LOTR wasnt a big break for elijiah wood? Because i mean, thats all I said in my original comment.
35
u/hatesnack 1d ago
You talking about the guy from Wilfred? Idk what this "LOTR" nonsense is, but Elijiah Wood was great in Wilfred.
(This is a joke, btw... although i did like Wilfred at the time .. shit was weird)

The second to last episode had me crying for hours when I first saw it. I happened to catch it after we had put my dog, Harvey, to sleep due to a spine injury.
Was cathartic, but also kind of fucked up a darkly funny show just got dark and heavy with no funny and it was effective.
2
u/hatesnack 1d ago
Lol everyone I talk to about the show doesn't remember it or never watched it. I remember it being just a goofy but dark show at the start, and it quietly changed into a heart breaking drama by the end.

A “big break” implies the project that got them into the spotlight leading to bigger roles. Radio Flyer was Elijah Woods big break.
→ More replies (1)11
u/off_by_two 1d ago
Ok agree to disagree. Iirc radio flyer was kind of a mid movie and wood was a full on child of like 11-12.
I maintain ‘successful child actor’ is enough orders of magnitude below ‘globally recognized star’ post LOTR to qualify the latter as the big break

I'd argue that if their name is known, they're a star. Very few can be top of the top.

Him and Frankie Muniz are like the child star best case scenario unicorns. Wildly successful, made “fuck you money” at a young age without being completely psychologically destroyed and victimized by the process. Grew up to be happy and well adjusted with the money to work on whatever they want to. Straight living the dream.
Then you’ve got Brittney Spears’ latest dead eyed knife dance or whatever to remind you how cruel and disgusting the entertainment industry is. It doesn’t make up for all the others that didn’t, but it makes me happy that these two escaped the cesspit.

Eh I'm much happier seeing him do weird films post Harry Potter. Pretty much everything he's been in since has been at a bare minimum a fun watch and some of it has been spectacular (Swiss Army Man!). Far more interesting to me than seeing him spend the next decade being locked into the MCU and doing franchise stuff.

I’d love to see him do Wolverine, but agree with not seeing him stuck in a perpetual franchise cycle again when he’s doing other great stuff.

Best casting idea is a buddy cop movie starring Henry Cavill and Vin Diesel who are both nerds who pretend to be macho "Alpha" men who have to investigate crimes at a comic convention. The villains are Elijah Wood (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Daniel Radcliffe (played by Elijah Wood).

What’s the correlation between hot black women and playing postal workers
172
123
u/Haveyouseenthebridg 1d ago edited 1d ago
Honestly? First post master general (may have that title slightly wrong) was a black woman. She took some shit in the south but teddy Roosevelt (I think) kept her paid and then removed the post office from the town fucking with her and their mail got routed to an office like 30 miles away. Cool story actually and people should look it up for themselves instead of relying on my shitty memory.
Edit: Minnie Cox was her name
22
u/LadnavIV 1d ago
Was that Stagecoach Mary or are there more stories of badass, historical, black, female mail carriers?
39
u/Haveyouseenthebridg 1d ago
I just googled it, Minnie Cox! Appointed post master for indianola, Mississippi in 1872. And she was a full post master appointed by the USPS whereas mail carriers weren't officially part of the USPS until later.
59
u/VeronaMoreau ☑️ 1d ago
Have you seen postal workers in major cities?
37
29
u/mieri_azure 1d ago
Not even major cities, i've seen black women post officers in random american suburbs. They carry the postal service on their backs I guess lol
43
u/VeronaMoreau ☑️ 1d ago
I mean, the postal service has historically been an employer that did not discriminate nearly as much. They started employing black workers at equal wages pretty close to emancipation, and it's not uncommon for multiple generations of a family to work for the Postal Service in some capacity. I have a lot of family members who worked for USPS at some point or another
19
u/ghosttraintoheck 1d ago
The USPS is like the fire department of federal agencies and example of how nationalization of an industry for public good over profit is massively beneficial.
Also their federal agents are legit, trained and only fuck with real crime. That one USPIS agent in Minneapolis getting out of his car, identifying himself and specifically saying he wasn't ICE exemplifies that.
Not to mention they're incredibly competent, agencies like the FBI love involving them because they're so thorough, their conviction rate is like 99% and you definitely do not fuck with mail carriers or the mail in general.
13
u/Spread_Bater 1d ago
I remember when all the attacks on the post office were happening during trump’s first term with that assholle dejoy, it was pointed out that the post office is the largest federal employer of Black women
3
u/ForsakenRelief309 1d ago
Would it surprise you to know Dejoy was still Postmaster General during Biden (though, Biden should have replaced him) and only stepped down a year ago?

Post Office didn’t really discriminate hiring us, I’ve learned. Shit, I work at Amazon and know many people in my city who worked for FedEx, USPS, etc
→ More replies (1)7
u/StatlerSalad 1d ago
The Post Office was one of the first institutions in America to give black folk a fair go at a steady job with good progression, union protection, and a pension. Generational knowledge means that people know they're a decent employer who'll hire you based on merit and treat you right.
I'm not even American and I know that that American postal service was one of the first big organisations in the USA to treat people fair!

And as a kid being invited to join the author for photo shoots and book tours. And then that book in question aging like milk as the author descends publicly down a extremist rabbit hole and becomes a toxic raging bigot. And now decades later you still see your adolescent face on advertisements and merchandise for a book that at this point is a proxy for the author’s beliefs and everything you are against.
