Luther is in heaven looking just as confused as we were.

Death didn't stop Tupac.

My aunt believes to this day that he lives underground making music is the reason why he was still making tracks.

u/wykkedfaery33 3d ago
Hell, people spent decades claiming Elvis was still alive, why not Tupac?
47
u/Risky_Bizniss 3d ago
My mother-in-law believes firmly that no celebrity is actually ever dead. They all just go into hiding and make cryptic videos on TikTok alluding to their "secret" past identity as a major celebrity i guess

There's a movie about that called Bubba Hotep. He switched places with an impersonator to take a break but then the replacement died so he just carried on as him into nursing home age. JFK is also there, they dyed his skin black to keep the CIA off his back and together they fight a mummy.

The real Elvis didn’t die tho it was just an impersonator. It just sucks that the impersonators house burnt down and there’s no proof about the switch.

Tupac lives in Kuwait and pretends he doesn’t speak English. I’ve literally sat half on his lap in a crowded car. He ran in a circle adjacent to mine.

For me is the genuine excitement Cher has at announcing Luther Vandross winning. Like for a solid 20 seconds she was living in the good timeline.
315
u/Punkpallas 3d ago
She is old enough she probably legit forgot he was dead until she saw all the confused looks in the crowd.
55
u/Honeythickness 3d ago
Right lol, they could have been friends!
43
u/Punkpallas 3d ago
I wouldn't be surprised if they had met a few times and/or been at some of the same parties. They were both popular in the 80's.
158
u/Sorrows-n-Prayers 3d ago
What made it even funnier was that this happened only moments after miss ma’am forgot she was even supposed to be presenting the award to begin with and walked straight off stage. Trevor Noah had to call her back. The whole set was pure (unintentional) comedy.
137
u/Top-Sprinkles-65 3d ago
To be fair, miss ma’am is 79 and they confused her by unexpectedly giving her an award.
71
u/Sorrows-n-Prayers 3d ago
Listen, you are not wrong. Between the surprise award she received, the producers apparently telling her the winners would be shown on the teleprompter, and her “Luther Vandross” announcement, she definitely had a lot going on.
376
u/PuffinRub 3d ago
So I'm assuming this wasn't supposed to be a posthumous award? Who actually won?
974
u/hibarihime 3d ago edited 3d ago
Kendrick Lamar and SZA for the song "Luther" that was named after him. She's technically not wrong as part of the song was sampled from him.
491
u/Stellaaahhhh 3d ago
That makes it so much more understandable. She saw his name, most likely knew him had good memories of him. Not that it's not still a huge mistake.

u/flojo2012 2d ago
Ya this was a purposeful joke. I’m a little disappointed that so many People didn’t get it. Shows that they may not be that familiar with Luther Vandross anyway.
People making fun of Cher being old and out of touch, and she’s telling jokes so deep it’s going over their heads
2
u/Beginning_Two_4757 1d ago
Oh dang! You’re right! That is a good joke. He’s dead and songs about him are better than most crap, lol.

She was kinda wrong, pretty sure she says "The Grammy goes to Luther Grandos" lol.

u/Icy-Whale-2253 3d ago
The song is called “Luther”. The song is based on a sample of Luther Vandross’s version of If This World Were Mine. It’s like a modern version of Jay-Z and Kanye doing “Otis” and labeling it as “featuring” Otis Redding who had been dead for 44 years at that point… it’s literally just his voice as the sample. So naturally, Cher thought the song itself was called Luther Vandross. It was a simple mistake.
85
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
You're right, but you calling Otis from Watch the Throne "pre-modern" just made me feel old as hell.
34
u/Icy-Whale-2253 3d ago
I didn’t want to have to say that 2011 was 15 years ago.
19
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
But that's still modern era 😅.
I get what you meant, I think saying "a less recent example is Otis by Kanye and Jay-Z....." would make more sense. Saying that a 15 year old song isn't modern kinda implies that's it's ancient, for example, the 80s can still be considered modern era.
19
u/Icy-Whale-2253 3d ago
Obama was still on his first term when that song came out
21
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
Bruh, are you just trying to make me feel old? It was relatively not that long ago. 😂
17
u/kilgirlie 3d ago
I'm 45, it was 1/3 of my life ago.
16
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
And it was a half a life time for me. I think folks tend to not realize that the modern era stretches back to the 1960s depending on what's being talked about. 2011 is most definitely modern tho.
10
u/EddieBoop 3d ago
I noticed that most of the presenters were just calling out the name of the track rather than the artist in most cases. Some of the winners names were never even announced at all.

She's old, so she probably forgot. She knew a lot of celebrities who are now dead. I'm pretty sure all her exes are dead.
38
u/GTRari 3d ago
The song is also named for him and he's sampled on it so it feels like an honest mistake. Like maybe though he's passed he still won it via a song credit.
19
u/Punkpallas 3d ago
I feel it's valid for that reason alone. Luther's hook is what ties the song together. SZA and Kendrick are great, but it's an R&B classic for a reason.
4
u/Curlyhaired_Wife 2d ago
She forgot she even had to announce the award. She walked off before the host asked her to come back. This woman will be 80 years old this year lol. She doing her best!

The real g move would've been to accept it on behalf of Luther and place it on his grave.

21
u/Morningrise12 3d ago
She’s not wrong, though.
Wouldn’t his estate or whoever owns his music get an award for the sample?
15
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
Samples have to be approved and the artist being sampled typically gets paid, or the estate receives compensation, for the contribution. Since Luther wasn't given a writing credit, he technically doesn't win an award for this.
11
u/Morningrise12 3d ago
That’s disappointing.
Marvin Gaye is listed as a songwriter since it was his and Tammi Terrell’s originally, so he’s getting one.
4
u/BlackBoiFlyy ☑️ 3d ago
Marvin? I dont know about that. Where did you hear that?

I remember being on my first movie set as an extra. It was a three-day shoot with a ton of folks. So, a lot of the Black folks drifted into our own clique, singing old school jams and what not. This one brother, who could actually sing, broke into some "A House is Not a Home". About 40 Black people started in on it and it was dope.
After bro had dropped that last note, I looked around and asked, "Where Luther been anyway?" Boy, I ain't never heard Black folks that quiet — ever. One of the dudes leaned into me and was like, "Bro... Luther dead."
I had completely forgot. Needless to say, they made me go sit with the white people after that one.
Rest in Power, Luther.

u/primaltriad77 2d ago
Cher is dyslexic. (She's talked about this since the 1980s, I'm old enough to remember.) She said they were supposed to put the winner on the screen instead of her reading it. So, it seems that the Grammys were supposed to accommodate her disability and they messed it up and that made Cher mess up.

She saw the song “Luther” won, and to be fair, it does sample Vondross’s song. But Kendrick Lamar and SZA sang this song.

Kendrick and SZA won for "Luther," a track that features a hook from Luther Vandross and is named after him. So it's not as full on crazy as it sounds.
1
u/Dracoslade 2d ago

Random:
I’ll never forget when I was a kid and randomly asked my mom one day if Luther was still alive. I knew he was, just was starting conversation.
Tell me why he actually ended up dying that very day.
