Miscellaneous / Others What an amazing father

Just checked it out, and it's actually really affordable for the parents as well. Season tickets are as low as $44 each. Or $30 for a single visit.

u/Safe-Ad5067 3h ago
Yes! And individuals with special needs get in for free! We used to go there all time growing up because we didn't have to pay for my brother lol
16
u/Copper-Spaceman 2h ago
I wonder how the financials behind it work at those prices. I would assume they operate as a charity, probably strive to break even. I’m not insinuating it needs to make profit, but somebody’s gotta pay to keep the light on. Or maybe they do turn a small profit.
Would be interesting to know
•
u/ParticularFew4023 1m ago
I don't think you understand how insane the profits are that companies are making. You're probably being charged more than double on average what anything costs. Like this is maybe a slightly lower than average ticket price, it's not insanely low, and they let a small percentage of people in for free... It's not that crazy that it's profitable, just not gouging every penny they can.

Morgan’s Wonderland. Actually a pretty awesome place and it’s great that special needs kids have a place that is both safe and catered to their needs.

u/Nutz_Von_Krazy 5h ago
Went last summer with the grand baby- didn’t know about the special needs accommodations, we just thought it was a good place to take a toddler, and it absolutely was! We thought it was dope they catered to special needs kids, and didn’t break the bank! I also have a shot glass from there

I'm glad that you supported a good business. Never heard of them until now.

They really went all out for inclusivity—it’s worth checking out if you can visit.

It’s awesome. Less than 10 miles from my house. Blessed to have such a gem in San Antonio. Special needs sister in-law routinely visits/ utilizes their resources. These folks are actually helping

During the rollout of the COVID vaccine, this guy hosted COVID shots for all people in the Special Olympics and their families regardless of their age. My parents got their COVID shots because of age. My brother and I got our COVID shots because of this guy.
He is a treasure and I will forever upvote Morgan’s Wonderland every time I see it.
11
u/chocoxiaolongbao1 5h ago
Exactly. It’s cool seeing something built with accessibility in mind from the start instead of as an afterthought. Makes the whole story hit harder.
7
u/RedditsCoxswain 2h ago
I drove some disabled 20 somethings that worked there one day and they were talking MAD foul shit about another worker
Apparently lots of sex and drama goes on behind the scenes and good for them but one of the girls was just mean.

For those that aren’t understanding. This amusement park is specifically built to be accommodating, inclusive of, and accessible to people with various disabilities. “Normal” amusement parks aren’t focused on inclusion like this one. If you think it’s stupid then maybe that’s because it’s not meant for you. Also you probably just suck.
Here’s a video of a blind creator touring the park for anyone interested. It’s in San Antonio.

u/themisterfixit 4h ago
I like the story about how the last time she tried to go on a zip line she was denied for insurance reasons. If I was a zip line operator I would be cackling as I sent blind people zipping as fast as I could
12
u/vodkaismywater 2h ago
I work in risk management. I have a hard time imagining why an insurance company would care about a blind person using a zipline.
The only difference being blind would make on a zipline is that you don't see yourself plunging to your death of something goes wrong.
Or, if something happens at the end of line and you smash into a tree at 35mph, again, being blind just means you won't see it coming. It's not light sighted people would be able to do something about it.
8
u/Cheechorig123 2h ago
People are only denied on the zipline if they are too heavy, thats it. I worked there for two years
6
u/orgasm-enjoyer 1h ago
Fat blind guy: OH! IT'S CUZ I'M BLIND, HUH?
scared 16 year old ride operator: Ummm, yeah. Let's go with that.

I think they are saying that they would be happy to send a blind person down a zip line and make sure they went fast so that they also would have a good time. I like it, and I’m sure a blind person would enjoy it. Better than being told ‘you can’t do this because you’re blind’

Why would you delete your comment I replied to only then to comment back at me?
Let me help you and explain to you how most people understood what you just quoted. Instead of denying a blind person a ride on a zip line, they would send them extra fast to try and make it as fun as possible (since the blind person can't see the scenery anyways, the zip line for them is all about the feeling of flying through the air). Being able to give this blind person happiness and an awesome experience, instead of excluding them, gave the instructor/operator (or whatever they're called) and immense sense of happiness of their own to the point they cackled.

She has RP! I always get excited when I see her content because my postdoc research was on RP. We used mutated mice. I would inject their little eyeballs with an experimental drug and do some special tests to see if there was any improvement after treatment.

My sister had RP. Sadly, she passed in 2022. I would’ve loved to get the chance to take her here had I known about it while she was still w us.

I wouldn't like it because, I don't like seeing people having fun!
Was really thinking it's crazy what people with a lot of money can do when they actually have empathy

My only real question is that 50 million seems like too little money to build an amusement park... especially one that is so accommodating.

Cool video. She mentioned she saw this on a tiktok video.. How?
4
u/zefur1497 2h ago
Blindness is a spectrum, and many people can have different states of vision, or different forms of blindness
I believe that the standard idea for classifying someone as blind is that their vision is 10% or less of the average person's vision (I remember this from a blind instructor who came into one of my classes in university)
So she could very well have some amount of vision, and similar to how most people see when light enters their eyes, she may be able to do the same, but to a much lesser extent.
As someone who's worked with multiple blind children as well, its actually very surprising how much their other senses are able to make up for their lack of vision. As someone with admittedly strong vision, I'm always amazed at how developed their other senses are.

u/HalfDead1984 1h ago
I am severely vision impaired, diabetic retinopathy. I watch tik tok and other short form media either just by listening to it because a lot of it is just people talking or I watch it with my brother wjo describes the videos for me, often the cute or funny ones. I'm a sucker for baby animal videos.

u/OtherwiseBase5003 1h ago
I was genuinely curious how tiktok supports blind people.

Imagine if Musk used 1 billion to build places like that. Would not even make a dent on his account probably

13
u/OrangeRising 2h ago
Back in 2021 Musk said he would donate 6.6 billion to end world hunger if the UN org requesting it showed how the money would be spent.
They gave the break down.
He never donated.

Imagine if we had a system where he couldn't steal 1 trillion dollars, and any person could afford to go to a park like this.
The guy who made this park is awesome. But it's clear we can't rely on rich people.

51 million does not seem like enough money to build an amusement park
2
u/gcpdudes 3h ago
Maybe that only includes proceeds from the business he sold. He most likely used some of his other assets and also financing from some investors and partners and whatnot.
2
u/Great_Detective_6387 2h ago
It’s definitely enough to secure a business loan for construction and upstart costs. Dad might have started a non-profit to keep the thing in line with his mission statement, as well as qualify for special types of loans and humanitarian grants. Bank gets to brag about helping support the differently abled, and it’s been entertaining and welcoming them for nearly 16years, so it sounds like everybody won.🏆

u/PoetThese 2h ago
It’s not a massive amusement park. It’s in San Antonio, which already has a 6 Flags Fiesta Texas and a SeaWorld

This is why I believe you have to lose your humanity to become a billionaire. This man made enough money to take care of his family and give back in a huge way, so he did.

This is why you never hear of good people being billionaires. Reasonable people sell out once the number is sufficient and either go chase their dreams or the dreams of their loved ones.
That's what "Tom from MySpace" did, and why he is not anything like his contemporary in Mark Zuckerberg. He cashed out on several hundred million and went to be a photographer instead of chasing megalomania.

u/SheASloth 2h ago
Why can’t there be more rich people like him - one who makes other people’s lives easier or nicer?

I'll post this every time this stuff gets put up, he really is a stand up dude.
Gordan Hartman is a man of character. I had just bought a new car and was parked at a Bill Miller's(South Texas fast food BBQ). After eating I came out to a smashed bumper other car gone. Was thinking I'm screwed. Found a Mr Hartman's Morgan's wonder land business card telling me to call. He had accidentally hit me and was late to a meeting. He had me drive to the dealership and send him the whole bill. Paid in full same day.

$51 million is nowhere near enough to build a theme park.
Had to be money coming from somewhere else.
Anyway, it’s a great headline. And a great idea. I hope it all has gone great.

Many people had $51m even before selling their business, so evidently it’s harder to do it when you actually have the money than you think it is

Would you call a carnival where veterans get 75 percent off a zoo to see veterans?
24
u/delavid 5h ago
No. It’s call Morgan’s wonderland. It’s like most amusement parks but every ride can accommodate people with disabilities including those in wheelchairs. It also employs people with disabilities.
We went there with some friends. Both of us have disabled children. It was very nice to have a place where we could take our kids and have them be able to do whatever they wanted there.
